Surround sound recommendation and positioning

Hi all,

Soon i'll be moving to a new house which has a basement with a room shaped like a Octagon. I will have my music studio here with 2 monitoring speakers but would also like to place a big TV here with 2 chairs and a surround sound setup. I never had a surround sound system before so would love to hear your ideas on the following things:

1. Is the room size enough for a good immersive experience?
2. Would you advice 5.1 or 7.1 ?
3. Currently placed the TV on the right side (see picture) . Is this a good setup to place the 5.1 (... or 7.1?) in ?
4. Any good setups that you would recommend for my budget?

Room size: 23 m2
Budget: 1.000

Thanks!

1000 is the budget but in what currency and what Country?

Is that budget for speakers, sub and receiver?

Hello gajCA,

1000 would be euros (The Netherlands). The budget would be for everything!

Thanks,

Thanks,
Then I'd consider starting out just 2.0 with quality floorstanders and you can choose to add as time goes along.

These are excellent as is the receiver.

https://www.hificorner.nl/qacoustics-3050i.html

https://www.hificorner.nl/avr-x1500h.html

Those are usually sold in pairs so if that is the pair price that is amazing but it can't be as they are $700/pair here in the us.

Another option is a pair of excellent bookshelves and a small but good sub.

BTW, was in Amsterdam two weeks ago.

Enjoyed it but the streets are filthy with cigarette butts.

I found that very weird.

Thanks,
With a $1000 budget, you're best bet would be to start with a nice set of front speakers and decent AVR. Add center, sub & surrounds as funds become available.

With your seating away from the back wall, you're an ideal candidate for a 7.1 layout: 3 speakers in front, 2 speakers at your sides, 2 speakers behind you. You'll get wrap-around envelopment and side-vs-rear separation in the surround field that is not possible with only 2 surrounds.

Will work but the set-up will sound more symmetrical with the stairs behind you rather than at one side.

Thanks for all replies so far! And yes, amsterdam isn't the cleanest of all places hehe.

I see multiple 5.1 sets for around 1300. Are those just plain bad or would it suffice for someone who just wants to watch a movie once in a while and play some games?

Also, I notice one of the speakers will be in my desk area if I keep my tv positioned like the picture . On what height will this speaker normally be ? Can be quite troublesome to have a speaker randomly on my desk for the 5.1 lol.

Ear height when seated is the ideal speaker height.

You'd have to post links of the 5.1 setups you are considering.

For many a simple setup is just fine, for others, especially AVS members, buying over time yields the best results.

It all boils down to your desires.

What prior experience do you have with amplifers/speakers and how satisfied were you?

Rotate your seating 45 degrees clockwise, and you woun't have to deal with a speaker at your desk...

Q Acoustics has a solid reputation on AVS as a good brand; I myself tested the Concept 20s at home and they were as good as the reviews stated they were.

There are many excellent pro reviews of 5.1 systems by Q Acoustics and the main "complaint" is the sub is not as good as larger more expensive subs.

Nevertheless, the measurements for the sub are good within its frequency range and as good if not better than any in a 5.1 set in your price range from competitors.

Here is a review of the prior version of that system but it has the same subwoofer and you can see the measurements.

Thanks for your reply! I like the looks of the speakers and might visit a store soon that has them. I would only need a receiver next to the set and I would be set right?

Neat, thanks for the link! That receiver in combination with the "Q Acoustics 3050i cinema pack" looks like a good package. Only downside of the 3050i is the sub - isn't very deep when i read the reviews. But this might not be the case in a smaller room.

Quite true.

You can always upgrade the sub a few years down the road with one from BKElectronics out of the UK.

Also, the Dolby Atmos technique, is this something that can be applied with these speakers/receiver or is that a whole different beast?

The receiver will do 5.1.2 Atmos only, not the preferred 5.2.4.

Those receivers are much more money.

Plus the best way to do Atmos is with four in ceiling speakers or 4 small bookshelf speakers mounted on wall mounts near the ceiling/wall junction.

As you are new to surround and have a decent but small budget I'd forget about Atmos and consider that in 5 years or so.

I have no desire to do Atmos though I have the money.

I find 5.1 more than satisfying for my needs to be honest.

System would cost about $4000 to replace so not high end or low end.

I had my first 5.1 system in 1986.

Sounds like i should skip atmos for now, yep I am not 100% budget bound but i found 1.000 - 1.500 a good point to get into surround sound. If you recommend a set that's WAY better and costs maybe 1.800 that would be fine

Must say the 3050i Cinema pack visually stunning . Had trouble to find a store where i can hear them, but i have a few months till i make the purchase.

Dali is another brand worth seeking out in your area.

But with an increased budget I'd be looking at not getting a package with an included sub but rather buying the five speakers from Q Acoustics, Monitor Audio, Polk S series, Canton, or Dali and getting a BK Electronics subwoofer.
