Another “Re-Veneer” project.....dedicated to the speaker line...that started my audio

I just purchased a used pair of Lynnfield 300l(s) on EBay. I plan to give the speakers a modern “update”.

In the early nineties...Boston Acoustics were the speaker line that kicked off my audio addiction.

I was in high school when these speakers were introduced. But I ended up with the lower level pair (VR-20s). I talked my parents into forking over $550.00 for them (much less than the $2k Lynnfield 300ls). I always wanted a pair of the coveted “Lynnfield” speakers. And 25 years later—-here we go.

Unfortunately I love *some* of the design....and the rest of it is horribly outdated. Hence the reason for this thread.....

I’m going to re-veneer these speakers and let them shine again.

Here we go.....

After reviewing many designs, I’ve decided on something very similar to this speaker(minus the black stripe).

Most zebrawood speakers will run the grain “vertical”. I love the horizontal look.

Very cool; looking forward to following your progress.

They should look great.

What does the grill look like or are you planning to run without a grill?

The grills are awful looking I’ll probably just delete them(or magnetize them so the grill holes don’t show)

Started pulling the “guts” out.

Really hate when they glue things in (port)

As I continue to sand....I’m thinking—-I should just sand down a little finer. And through some clear coat on it

So it was oak veneered and painted black? I always assumed black “wood” was some sort of molded plastic product.

That is correct oak veneer over MDF(pretty much always the case in cabinet construction)

I’m “blocking out” the speaker (trying to make it perfectly flat.

I’m amazed how “off” these speakers can be.

The B&w 805s that I refinished—had high/low spots pretty much everywhere.

My goal is to finish them “better” than the factory.

Thanks, yes original veneer which of course was covered by matte black paint.

It looks so good, I almost feel guilty covering it up!

If it weren’t for the grill holes, I would just throw some clear coat over it.

But “onward and upward”

Got my veneer- ready to go!

If not for the larger grain circles in the middle, the speaker sides almost have a zebrawood grain already! I think if you experimented with some stains, maybe something with a bit of red in it, before clear-coating it, the existing finish could look amazing.

Nonetheless, looking forward to seeing how the Zebrawood turns out. I agree with you that the horizontal grain example looks a lot more interesting and a lot cooler than the traditional vertical grain.

The front and sides will be “wrapped”...so the top has to be cut off.
