Subwoofer for about $250

What sub would you recommend for my family room? It's about 13' X 17', but it's open in the rear to the kitchen. Seeing that it's our family room, I'm thinking of a 10" sub.

It will be used about 75% for movies, and 25% music.

Budget about $250.

Thanks.

Thanks. It may be a little too big though.

What would be a good 10" sub ?

To be honest you have a large space for a sub to fill so, I'm not sure you would get the impact you are looking for from a 10" sub. What you are really looking for is something like the RSL Speedwoofer 10s or the SVS SB1000 but both are above your price range.

No, it's just like the non wireless sub. You can hardwire it aswell. I never heard the martin logan so I cant say which is better. Your area is kinda big. I have a 14x19 and I have dual dual 15" so 4 15"

Yikes ! This is just our family room, with a TV and our stereo setup. In our basement theater I have the BIC F12.

Nowhere near St. Louis anyway. I'm west of Milwaukee, Wi.

Thanks but I'm leaning more toward a 10" sub. Anymore good 10" subs ? The Klipsch from above looks good.

They are but I think the klipsch is just right, you could go another brand but the value is there might as well take advantage of it. Even a monolith 10" is $500 and I think the klipsch sounded a bit better. Worse that could happen is you dont like it, return it . I started wanting to add a small sub 5 years ago I been through atleast 13 subs before I settled on my rythmiks. I started with a $150 budget, now I'm far too in with me now owning 2 of the best ported subs I've ever heard and they each cost $2500.

Why? Space limitations? What size box are you looking for (max dimensions)?

RSL Speedwoofer, Monoprice Monolith would be better than those listed so far. But those are out of your stated price range.

Duals are always better! This is the way to go if you can manage to fit 2 for the price of 1 klipsch. Duals always sound better.

Mainly space limitations. It's our family room. I could probably go with a 12" though.

1) If I only bought one 10", do you think the Infinity listed is better than the Klipsch listed above ?

2) If I bought a 12", which would you recommend ?

Thanks.

1 - Possibly, but I haven't heard it. The Klipsch listed doesn't dig very deep, but it may be sufficient for what you are looking for.

2 - At your stated price point I would look at the PL-200 II. It will rumble, but it's not very good below ~30Hz (I have one sitting in my basement, so I do know what it is capable of)

You haven't stated your needs. If you watch current action movies and want something that has a +/- in the 20s, none of the ~$250 subs are going to do that very well. If at all. And not likely in a 10" form factor.

Basically, only you can tell if a single 10" subwoofer delivers what you want in your setup. Or any other sub for that matter. Personally I would look into the biggest subwoofer you can reasonably place in the space, and understand that no matter which you get, you may not be able to place it where it will perform it's best as your room will dictate that (google "subwoofer crawl").

Sub builds: Yet another Infinity 1260 build | Twins! | Modified V.B.S.S. build | UM12-22 builds | AV stand and sealed UM18s

Speaker builds: DIYSG HTM-10 build | DIYSG Volt-6 build | DIYSG Fusion-8 builds

I understand your stituation. In our family room, I have a single 10" sub (a 15+ year old NHT SubOne) in there as part of a 3.1 system. The room is open to pretty much the whole house, so to give it what it really needs would exceed the WAF really quickly, but it's mostly TV watching and casual viewing in there anyways. If SubOne died today, I would probably replace it with a RSL Speedwoofer 10s due to it's small dimensions and good reviews. It's a small sub, and not going to be enough for a huge room, but it's generally considered the best $400 sub on the market. The best $300 sub is often considered to be the BIC Acoustech PL200 II and it's on sale for $250 right now, so if you can get approved by the wife it's your best bet. If the BIC is just too large, the Klipsch mentioned above would be better than nothing, just so long as you have the right expectations for a single inexpensive 10" sub trying to fill a large space.

There is a sticky thread on the Sub-woofer subforum about budget (<$300) subs, that might be worth scrolling through.

I didn't realize this until recently, but the Premier Acoustic PA-150 is still being sold for $250. It's about 3" wider than say the Bic PL-200 II, but much stronger at 20Hz and far more stronger in the mid-bass region. For $250, the PA-150 mops the floor with any of these other budget subs. If there is any possible way you can accommodate the PA-150, you'll get a lot more sub for your money.
