Advice - white bookshelves under $350

Hi all,

I am looking for white bookshelves under say $350, I was given flexibility on price ;):D for deal to get white, room paint match
Anyway, I read that Whathifi rated B&W 607's very high. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

callas01 07-20-2019 07:12 PM

These are excellent if you can stretch the budget, maybe offer $400.... great speakers! Warm and detailed, decent bass. The B&Ws will be more forward sounding. Depends what kinda sound you like.

BTW...looking to setup 5.1 for family room, size about 25'x26' and about 20' heigh.

Canton Chrono's are available in white and sound great.

Q Acoustics currently has the 3020i on sale for $255/pair and those are available in white. Wharfedale Diamond 220 is also available in white for $250/pair.

Lots of speakers in white nowadays, but not many under tree fiddy.

RSL CG3
Add a CG23 center and more for 5.1. They have a complete system with one of the best budget subs out there.

White doesn't narrow it down much. Add Dali to the list.

https://www.whathifi.com/dali/spektor-2/review

Also, Def Tech D-7.

BTW, I see the B&Ws you mention run $600 for the pair, so does that mean $350 per speaker, $700 for the pair?

callas01 07-20-2019 11:11 PM

I have Dali Concept 1s in my bedroom nice speakers and do pretty good in straight 2.0 for 99% tv & streaming.

Maybe he’s talking £’s instead of $’s? If that’s the case he may have more options.

I can't seem to find white Dali Spektor 2 from any reputable seller...
Q acoustics seems to be good but whites are all gone.

The 3020i bookshelf speakers in white are available. All four finishes are currently available. Not sure what you are seeing or where.

I would go with the Canton Chrono listed in post 4

What about the budget clarification?

I should have been clear on the budget portion.....350/pair.

I listed B&W 607's just as a reference. hope this narrow's the selection.

Coming to Q's I was looking for 3020's vs 3020i. I read that 3020i's lacked the bass compared to their predecessors.

RSL CG3's seem to be good value for money but never listened to them or even Canton's...anywhere to listen to them?

thanks

RSLs have free return shipping so easy enough to decide for yourself.

Accessories 4 Less has onerous return shipping fees so for a pair of bookshelves could cost $200 to return to them as they make you pay the real, (not discounted), shipping rate BOTH ways plus a 15% restocking fee...unless they "find" some "damage" on the speakers you return and then the costs go up.

When KEF puts the Q150 back on sale for 299 I'd grab those, there isn't much that competes with them in that price range. Wirecutter actually compared a bunch of speakers blind and picked them as the upgrade pick here: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/be...helf-speakers/

I haven't heard anything that comes close in the budget range myself, I had to step up to LS50's to get something better.

Nice. I never considered them because generally KEF is too expensive, in my opinion. $300/pair would be great on a desktop with a budget AVR to power and cross to a sub. How often do these sales happen?

Yeah coaxials are perfect for a desktop, they were just on sale within the past few months and I'm almost certain they will be 299 again for Black Friday through December.

I will keep an eye out. However...powered monitors are where it's at IMO. No other gear taking up precious limited space...and the $ that costs.

For a desktop I agree, if I were going powered I think I'd be looking at the JBL 305/306, they don't look that great but the measurements are pretty amazing for the price.

Yep I have the Mackie MR624s which sound a bit better than the JBLs and are closer to the Kali LP-6. They are big black boxes though - no veneers or anything like that.

I don't know where you read that the "i" series had less bass ... the cabinets are a touch bigger, therefore they have a bit more bass than their predecessor.

RSLs have 4" mid-woofs, so you will have to use a sub that has good response in the upper bass region, say 140 Hz minimum. Since you will be crossing over at 100/120 Hz, you will need to place the sub in the front of the room, near the speakers, so there will be no sub localization.

Available here, but you will need to verify with Dali that they are an authorized dealer:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/DALI-SPEKTO...IAAOSwmd1dGibY

These guys have 100% satisfaction, so odds are they are good to deal with.

Amazon has non-white. Perhaps you could contact Music Direct to see if they have or can get the white, assuming that Dali confirms that MD is an authorized dealer:

The bass does not go any deeper, but it is more articulate sounding -- the bass seemed to choke some in the regular 3020 -- The QA are nice for the price, but the Canton speakers showed them the door -- however your call

RayGuy 07-21-2019 03:14 PM

Hard to know what to choose, not having heard any of them. Go on instinct/reviews, or, better yet, get a few options in-house and decide for yourself. Some options are free to return, others have the $10/pair fee, others a bit more expensive. IMO, these fees are well-spent, and significantly increase the odds of getting something you will be happy with for the long-term.

You apparently read some bad information. Pretty much everything I read when researching the purchase of the 3020i pointed to them being an improvement across the board compared to the 3020, including bass.

I'm with aarons915, post #18 —the KEF Q150 for $299... assuming KEF sells the Q150 in white.
In the meanwhile, you can get the Sony SSCS5 for $73/pr. now.

greenzellybean 07-22-2019 07:27 PM

Thanks for support guys...I went to BB (Magnolia) today to listen to few speakers...
I ruled out DefTech D7 or D9's (really good sale price) ...they seemed to need a lot more amperage compared to say Elac or other speakers on display?? Not sure if it was the Receiver but...at same volume levels and same song/movie scene on a Pioneer Elite 9.2 receiver, DefTech's seemed to be underwhelming compared to other speakers.

so now down to few choices
Dali Spktor 2

QA 3020i,
RSL's

and maybe...Canton's ( :( dealing with A4L)

wonder if it's easy to listen to QA's and RSL's before making a decision.

RayGuy thanks for suggesting music direct..they are in Chicago so I can actually go visit them, will call them tomorrow.
