JBL 530 vs Polk LSiM703

has anyone owned both? thoughts?
I purchased 530s a pair at $300 (plus tax) on sale a couple months ago and am super happy with them.
I see 703s are on sale at adorama. $518 shipped a pair. (no tax)

any super difference between the two? (other than the polk's deeper bass?) I dont know if adorama offers free returns.

I suspect the JBL will be better up top: compression driver in a horn/waveguide, more clarity, better behaved dispersion. Looks like the batmobile and wouldn't put them on my desk, though. Would be curious to hear them side by side.

Let me know what you think. I have the JBL 530 as well as the 590s for my LCR. Love them.

when you look at them online, they look bad (very bad with grills off). but up close and personal they are very good looking to my surprise.

when i got them i assumed the lady friend would hate them.

she said they look like vajayjays.
works for me

i thought i was done with the upgrade bug damn it.
i suspect if i order the polks i will notice subtle differences in the treble, major difference in the bass, as usual.

i was also in the process of making the purchase when they sold out.. now i'm debating sierra 1's the 703's or nht c3 .. i'm thinking they all are solid choices.. i have those canton's in my mind as well , i just don't like a4l's return policy ... i'm in phoenix , so ascend is an easy return ..

A second sub will be added and maybe a 3rd LS50 in the middle. I don't see much improvement beyond that without going the next level up which would be beyond reach financially and wouldn't sound that much better.

They're being phased out. Will be replaced by Kef Q100's in the near future. I will likely sell the JBL LOFT package and Pioneer AVR. I just don't know what I can get for it?

i'm lucky enough to have a tin ear.. the cbm 170's would be good enough if they weren't so forward.. they are easily the most articulate budget speaker i've had.. the q100's and emo basx8 in my bedroom is all i need , i'm done there

I was looking at the Soundstage archive yesterday and was thinking about this. Here's my hypothesis. I think the Ascend 170s sound forward because they measure flat; I think your ears have gotten used to all the speakers that have dips from 200-1000 and/or 2000-5000 or so. Look through to archive and see if you notice that.

i think you have hit the nail on the head .. i have eq'ed them at the xover point and 6000 hz .. problem(mostly) solved but of course i lose a bit of resolution.. they *really* are articulate .. the mids are so clear as to put the q100's to shame.. they absolutely destroy the b1's in midrange clarity , but of course the b1's are smoother.. i just realized how good the q100's are overall when listening to the cbm170's , the q100's are close to as clear and are *smooth* in comparison to the ascends...

If you look at the off-axis measurements on soundstage, you see the region from 2-5k is still flat way out off-axis, this is why they sound bright I believe. The ideal off-axis response would match the slope of the woofers range and smoothly decline, the KEF reference 1 is about a perfect example to compare to. I haven't heard the CBM-170 but I had some Polks a few years back that measured similarly, they sound ultra detailed at first but fatigue you after longer sessions.

yup . but the eq at 1k-6k hz , helps a bunch , but like i said , they do lose *some * resolution...

I'd say the Q100s are *way* more forward than the 170s. Although their mid-bass punch does make them more fun to listen to, in small doses.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

not in my set up though .. in general they might be , but for whatever reason my room makes the ascends more forward .. neither sounds bright though, the kef does have at least as much treble energy though.. in my bedroom (small with a big bed) the q100's are just awesome , smooth yet detailed.. it's also ear adjust to a large degree too , my "hearing" changes and adapts...
