Mixing Ribbons with Dome Tweeter

Hi All,

The upgrade bug has hit me sooner than I expected. Few days back, I came across Quad S1 bookshelves with ribbon tweeters and I am absolutely blown away. I want to buy them desperately. I understand I would need a matching centre as well. Currently I have KEF Q600 (along with KEF Q150 and Q300). It's a decent system but KEF sound, which is extremely analytical and less hifi-ish is not for me. Feel free to throw abuses at me

I am skeptical if KEF centre with aluminium dome would timbre match with Quad S1's ribbons. Note that I am concerned only about movies because music is always 2.0 for me.

Should I go ahead with the S1?

Quad S series has a center speaker as well but it is a bit out of my budget at the moment as I am planning to buy a marantz receiver (NR 1609) to replace an entry level Yamaha. I like warm sound but the Yamaha is quite bright. I am taking a leap of faith with Marantz's reputation of having a laid back warm sound signature (based on online reviews as it's difficult for me to visit the stores and listen in person).

Even if I go ahead with the Quad centre, a grave concern would be the centre's rear ported design. While the S1s are rear ported too I have space to keep them a foot away from the rear and side walls. Unfortunately, I do not have that luxury with the centre, which has to be placed with 5-6 inches of the rear wall (sides are open though).

Please advise. Your help would be much appreciated.

Stereo listening - Swans D1080-IV / DAC - Schiit Modi Multibit / Sennheiser HD 598
Front Speakers - KEF Q300
Rear Speakers - KEF Q100
Center - KEF Q600
Receiver - Yahama HTR 3067

I don't think they would match well but they won't be that bad if you need to wait awhile to get the center. I had the Q150 for awhile too and thought they were too laid back, you might go try to audition the LS50 and see what you think before ditching KEF, they are much more detailed than the Q150.

Thanks for the suggestion but in my part of the world, LS50 costs $2500. At that price I would have a lot of options, not to mention it is completely out of my budget.

Ouch, yeah I understand that. One option that would probably match them decently well is the Chane A2 speaker, as long as it's not too much wherever you are.

My current setup-up albeit the same manufactuer....uses dome (nrt) mains with ribbon (RAAL) centre channel....in reverse...I would not recommend based on dispersion characteristics of said tweeters.
The primary reason for my switch was based solely on intelligibility integrity of dialogue during low listening levels and/or drama flicks because of the natural presentation attributes of the ribbon tweeter.

But won't the rear port cause issues close to the wall?

will it be on a stand? Put it at the forward edge of the stand and it’ll be fine. If up on the wall mounted put the port plugs in it.

It will be wall mounted. Will port plugs impact the sonic performance of the driver?

If you found that on CL for $75 I would jump on it.

I had the C1 with Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 which uses domes and is a very mellow laid back musical speaker, zero "matching" issues---don't fall for that silly old wives' tale!

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

I have got a new sealed box offer for C1 priced at $300.00. I thought it was quite reasonable?

Where are you located? If in the US, then yes that's way too much. In other parts of the world, maybe ok.

Then $300 for the Emotiva C1 is perfectly reasonable. Regular price is $250 in the US. Totally worth it for a solid center speaker, esp. if movies are your main usage---the center does 70-90% of the output and 99% of the dialogue.

+1.. that is a reasonable price when adding transport costs on a 8,000 mile trip...
