The 180s are actually showing as $49 a piece right now. That's some crazy deal, if Fry's is willing to ship them for free.
Wow thanks. I canceled order for the 130s and got two of the 180s for $1.98 + tax cheaper : ) and for local pickup - store is about 20 miles away. Although often Fry's comes back not able to fulfill on store pickup of sale items. So I might have to re-order the 130s for shipping. If the towers do get fulfilled, it will also save me ~$40 not needing to get stands. (BTW, if the tweeter at around ~38 inches in air is not enough, would putting them on milk crates be okay or would that resonate)?

On room: The room is more around 15' X 25' and it does not have full ceilings - garage room so about 1/4 to 1/3 of the normal ceiling height is missing from the slant of the roof and ceilings are only about 7.5 feet even where the ceiling is flat. So 2800 cubic feet at maximum and it is probably smaller - I needed to measure.

JBL Studio 290 towers are also on sale for $99 each. These are higher end speakers compared to the Arenas.

I already placed order for the 180s. You think the 290s would be noticeably better. My budget has already expanded and it just an exercise room. Would the 290s but a completely materially better speaker?

I canceled the 180s and placed order for pickup at store on the 290s. Talked to someone at store and he said they were in store demo speakers, one missing a grill. I do not like idea of demo speakers since kids tend to push in the cones etc. He thinks any ordered on Frys.com marked clearance would be demos from other store, so I guess it would not be safe ordering them online for shipment either if I do not want a demo.

Sorry, I haven't heard the Studios, so I can't really comment.

Since this is your exercise room where you will not be doing any critical listening, my guess is the Arenas will do just fine.

The main difference from what I can see will be sensitivity. The Studios have 3 dB higher sensitivity, so they'll require less power to reach the same volume level. You would need double the amplifier power to get the Arenas to the same volume. Depending on how loud you like to listen, this may or may not matter.

I don't know about that. The Arena 130s I bought from them on clearance looked brand new, packaged as if they came straight from the factory.

Where the ones you ordered marked "clearance" or just on sale?

Waiting on hold for national Frys.com to ask.

Looking at the 180s, he said they were mostly demos but he found some stores that listed some new ones. Those stores had more than two total, likely at least 2 new and some demos, so he suggested ordering three, then he would see what stored got assigned the order. I did that and the order went to a Austin store which he said had two new ones. Then he requested I call Austin to downgrade the order to just two, requesting the new ones be sent. I did that. The person at Austin was just as nice. She said no problem, when I explained what I was doing. She also added that they cannot send demo units via UPS anyway - insurance problem if speakers were already damaged from demo use and if they only had demos they would cancel order or call me to tell me. She said she would check to see if two new ones, and if so, prepare to ship those and cancel my third one. She said that just like in-store pickups not charging your credit card until you pick up the item, the credit card is not charged until shipment. I guess that is why my credit card company did not do a security shutdown after I placed 12 orders at Frys in last 24 hours.

Anyway, I just got "please to inform you" email for that order and it shows only two speakers. It also has a column for "openbox" and it shows 0 for that column.

Even going back to years when customer service was generally good, unlike the contemporary degrade in most service, what those two did would have been exceptional. In today's time, it was shockingly nice.

And even more extraordinary considering Fry's current situation. Rumors are they are circling the drain, like many other B&M stores. They let a lot of their employees go, and the morale of all the ones still remaining is pretty low, just awaiting the inevitable while they're searching for new jobs.

Sometimes frys.comnwill let you complete the checkout process, then when you finalize the order, that's when it pops up that they are out of stock with the item you ordered. That's the case with the studion290 on clearance. This has happened to me several times. It's very disappointing that they operate this way.

The A 130s? Any concerns using a poly-paper cone in a garage? Mine will be in a room above a garage only air-conditioned when I exercise. The room is fairly insulated and closed but is above a garage with no central air-conditioning so it will be more humid than a typical house. Would that pose a problem with these type of cones?

What do other posters think?

It should still work and your room is insulated

I haven't given it much thought, to be honest. It is treated paper, not just plain paper.

I've had a set of speakers with similar treated paper woofers in the garage for a number of years before and never noticed any issues.

As I mentioned earlier, the Studio 290's will not ship. You complete the entire checkout process and then it pops up that it's not available. I did place an order for a pair of the Arena 170's for $98/shipped and it went through. That still doesn't mean it's a done deal, however. I have actually ordered from frys.com before and the order sat idle for a week and never shipped. Turns out it was OOS, but their system never updated. So nothing is for sure until your order on their clearance items arrives at your door.

EDIT: This is not a good sign. After ordering the Arena 170's I immediately received a UPS shipping notification with tracking number. This has only happened one time ever out of the dozens of orders I have placed with frys. The one time I immediately received a shipping notice was the time I never received the item and it sat idle for a week. So basically I have serious doubts the Arena 170's will actually ship.

When I ordered the 130s, I got a shipping notice right away. They arrived as scheduled.

That's unusual. Every time I have ordered with frys.com the shipping/tracking email arrives usually the next day. Most every time I don't get notified until after the merchandise has been picked up by UPS. They NEVER generate a tracking number 1 minute after the order is placed. Have to see how this plays out, but I won't be surprised if these never get picked up bu UPS.

EDIT: As I expected, these will not ship. Just received an order cancellation from frys.com. At least this time they didn't leave it hanging for a week. They are so unreliable with this stuff. It's no wonder they are doing poorly as a company. Here's the email I received.

Good Afternoon,

This is Brandon from Fry's Electronics. We are unfortunately out of the JBL Tower Speakers you ordered, so we will have to cancel the order. We haven't charged your card. If you have any questions, please contact us at 512-733-7060.

Nice little receiver, even if it's only 45 wpc RMS.
No bass management either, but I don't know of any receiver in this price range that has it. Gotta get an AVR to do BM, or pay big bucks for a stereo one. Another option would be to use speaker level connections on the sub and hope the sub has a high pass filter, which is a lottery as well.
I've got an old Panny XR-57 receiver, so that's most likely what I'm going to use in the garage.

Should I get a different amplifier than the https://www.parts-express.com/dayton...ifier--300-593

I thought it was the same as the APA100 but with added bluetooth but it is a different class. It is a Class D instead of the Class AB of the Apa100. It has not been out long and has few reviews but some stated they heard hiss and that it does not sounds as good as the Apa100. Looking at its specs it list distortion <1.0% whereas the Apa 100 lists < 0.1%. It guess that would be consistent with the Class since Class D can jeopardize high frequencies depending on build and circuitry.

Would it make a difference? I like the built in aptx in it but I could get another amplifier and get an addon aptx adapter.

Thoughts? Other amp to get?

If you are trying to stay away from Class D, I would look at this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078H7ZP8T

With relatively efficient speakers, the low power rating shouldn't be an issue. Notice it has a 180 Watt transformer, which is more than that Pioneer mentioned earlier, so it should have plenty of headroom.

Another option:

That Pioneer and the comparable Sony receiver also list near 1% THD. The Apa102BT has better features (aptx codec on Bluetooth) and I will not be listening very loud. Also, Class D is what more and more amplifiers will be.

Just not many reviews on it - I think the Apa102BT just came out this year.

I doubt it would be something I could hear. Thoughts?

The 180s have not shipped. I doubt they will.

Any bookshelf or towers that would actually go down to 40Hz that could be had for $300 a pair?

If you don't mind the traditional Klipsch sound signature, these towers go down to 45Hz for $229:

Easy to drive, too.

These would be a little over $300, says they go down to 38 Hz:

Another cheaper option: Polk T50, $100 each, down to 40 Hz:

Any bookshelf or towers that would actually go down to 40Hz that could be had for $300 a pair?
Not easy at the current budget, but the Boston A26 will hit 50 hz .... also look at Polk RTi6 and Polk S20 for better than average bass

Costco has the Ion pathfinder charge 3 on sale for $119 each. They can be plugged in or use the recharable battery that lasts 100 hours.

Built in amps, 8 inch woofer and 2 inch tweeter.

Has built in Bluetooth, radio, charges your phone too.

Sounds great in my garage that is 45x27. I use 2 in a stereo pair. Also use them outside for parties at at the pool and beach.

I have never actually heard Klipsch. Being a horn is the treble over whelming and harsh?

I was originally think of those. They have good reviews indicating they perform much higher than their budget cost would imply. Some reviews indicated that they were on par with the Pioneer Andrew Jones towers but the Jones towers, while less efficient and not extending as low, sounded better overall.
