Dorm room speakers

Just created my account for a specific question.
My son is in a small college dorm room and has recently shown an interest in music. My inputs for music suggestions are pretty varied from Joe Satriani to Andre Segovia, Blues really I just listen to a whole variety of music
I expect him to probably follow the same path.
So i have been looking at bookshelf speakers that have the built in amplifiers and are bluetooth compatible.
I expect him to connect to his phone and i have read there are some high resolution websites for streaming music that I will get him a membership to. Maybe at some point I will buy him something to store music on that can connect directly to the speakers to prevent loss.
Space is at a premium so everything has got to be small.
So is there a brand// model recomendation and how much will I need to spend to purchase a set of speaker of this type that will give good quality sound across a wide variety of music.
Thanks in advance

These Kanto YU4's are nice too and have a phone preamp built in if you are into vinyl. If you have space the YU6 will have more bass but more $$ of course.

I was looking at the Audioengine at Crutchfield and during an online chat the rep recommended the Kanto brand over the audioengine. He said he had heard them side by side and could tell no difference.
So how much of a difference would it make if I jumped up to the ribbon tweeter?

kanto doesnt have usb in or a dac. your going to step up to 700 dollar ribbon tweeter kantos for college kid? lucky kid. the 270 dollar kantu's have old tech compared to new audioengines. maybe they sound the same, havent heard the, but sales peeps always push a brand for a reason...maybe new models coming out. tweeter materials dont mean much as its design that matter...however, many like the sound of ribbons. buy 2 pairs and compare, send other one back.

whicher speaks you buy, get stands that angle up a bit, or make your own

Thanks for responding. I have read that ribbon was “better” so really Im just asking if thete is really that much better.
So with no usb or DAC does that mean i cant later purchase some of storage device that will connect directly to the Kantos but I can for the Audioengine?

many connect their laptops to speakers via usb...ofc you have wireless....but its still nice to have. ribbon tweets vs other tweeter materials sound different and they have their following. I cant answer what you may like or even how they will sound in your space / setup. give us a budget and maybe get some ideas. most audiophiles dont care about wireless as sound quality is not as good. but wireless makes sense in a dorm or rental imo.

the powered speakers already recommended are good.

the JBL 305 are ofter recommended as well. (https://www.amazon.com/JBL-Two-Way-S...gateway&sr=8-3)

however, I would recommend something durable to successfully survive dorm life. As well as something that can work for an impromptu party. A single "box"

I was originally going with the audio engine until i talked with crutchfield but i think im going to stay that course.
Do the a2+ usually require a subwoofer?
Then the next question is A2+ HD3 or A5+.

I use a sub, but thats due to having an extra and space. all speakers really need a sub, even my 5 grand focals. but that doesnt mean wont sound good enough.

here a youtube vid to give idea if tiny a2+ for you....if bass is required...alot of good sounding bass, I always say get a sub.

THanks Torii the line about why are the sales people pushing them is what made up my mind. That plus the info about the technology differences.
So whats your opinion of the a2+ With a sub vs the A5+ without.

For everybody else who replied thanks a lot for your input.

I bought the a2+ because they image really well on my desk...the center image is locked in and has depth behind my pc monitor. I can pinpoint instruments/sounds with ease. and they play loud enough and are really small. I didnt want shoeboxes or larger on my desk. I put an extra sub I had under my desk...cause I had one....I usually dont listen loud enough at my desk to warrant the sub. but I always recommend subs if one asks. for a dorm room dont think a sub would be appreciated by others or have space. only larger model I have heard was jbl 305 and returned it....too big and wasnt sound I was wanting.

I like how your Loxjie P20 matches your speakers (color-wise). I have one in red too :-) You have a THX AAA 789 as well. We have same setup. What DAC do you use?

I like the look. I actually had picked the red A2+ and the wedge also. Im still hesitating to make the purchase because Im not sure if I should step up to the HD3. If anybody has experience with both it would be appreciated.
The drawbacks to the HD3s are lack of remote and no shielding but as Ive read online a fuller bass bass and sound. Im thinking it could negate the need for a sub and n a dorm sized room. negate

Hello all I wanted to thank everyone who responded. I have looked at different options and brands recommended and my plan has evolved to the audionengine 6 with bluetooth. It seems to me that i do away with the need for a subwoofer and it will be a speaker that should last him quite a while something that will be able to fill his needs after graduation. Thanks again to everyone for your advice.

Thank you Torii I certainly hope they match the many reviews I have read about them.
I would really like to hear them but the two companies local to me that were listed on the AE website actually only purchase them for specific needs and don't stock.
On paper they check all the marks, footprint, no need for components, no need for a sub and although they are more than I had planned to spend the reman price is a bit better with full warranty and return if not satisfied. I have time to wait for a sale if the reman I selected don't become available.
Thanks for your input it was most helpful.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about TUK, they may have better inputs (USB) and outputs (headphone out) if your son is planning to connect them to a PC.

I have a question for you. If you dont go bluetooth how do you get internet streaming to the speakers? The only thing that concerns me with the whole bluetooth thing is advances in technology will eventually render the HDs obsolete something that wont happen with a standard speaker.
And my thought is would I be able to go the standard speaker route and stay in the same price range with better sound than the HD6+ and still have hi def streaming.

Thank you for you generous offer. He does have headphones but he left them at home. The review i looked at gave them better sound marks than the HD6 but im already outside my budget and they are $200 more than the reman AE. Its readily apparent this whole stereo thing can be an endless chase depending on more money for each step.

usually the merits of a speaker boil down to how loud they play, their size and look, and whether they play music that sounds good. then to add to complexity, what makes a speaker sound good to you. what are the options to position speaker? in a dorm room, I wouldnt bother with something expensive. I cant remember anything I still have from my college days. just memories, pics, stories....I had 2 pairs of bose 301 and a kenwood avr. no clue what happened to em. most people have a desk throughought life and I recommended a speaker that sounds good on a desk and doesnt take up alot of space.

So I took a trip this weekend with the family to visit my son. Early in the am we were the only two awake. He opens his laptop and at very low volume starts playing classical music while reading a text book. So apparently this is pretty normal for him as he doesnt want to disturb others or be distracted while studying.
Are the AE’s a good choice for low volume music?

Seems like you have a lot of worries that a traditional amp/receiver and passive bookshelf speakers would solve.

Ever thought of a setup like an SMSL AD18 amp and a decent set of bookshelf speakers? You'd still have a small footprint, but you'd get the benefits of having the amp utilize the PC/TV and you can still bluetooth in.

Personally, I'm not a fan of powered speakers as I've not seen a set with the amount of inputs that I need/desire + with a sound signature and adjustments that I like.

If you son likes listening at low levels, he could boost the bass and treble on something like the AD18 amp to compensate. Not a lot of active speakers where you can do that.

I have a $500 budget for this. That and a shared dorm room that is 14x14’ is why i thought wireless. Less things like components and wires and a smaller footprint. I see those amps are $130 aprox. I can look at that but i havent looked really at any passive speakers. Omg starting over 🙄
