ELAC Debut Reference Speakers Featured at CEDIA 2019

The latest speakers from ELAC's Andrew Jones are the Debut Reference. I heard a pair of the bookshelf model belt out tunes with clarity and dexterity at RMAF 2019. ELAC showed the bookshelf model along with a tower variant of the Debut Reference at CEDIA 2019.

These are simply amazing $500 speakers. Andrew notes the new Debuts have a better crossover than the current Debut, same woofer but new cast basket with less resonance, and same tweeter but new waveguide. And the vent is now a front slotted design, which improves placement options versus the rear-ported Debut 2.0.

I demoed the $500/pair Dubt Reference Bookshelf model at RMAF 2019 and found the sound to be compelling. Love it when treble has "snap" to it but is not bright or grainy. Translates well for pop music or classical. Arguably their ability to handle orchestral music is the greatest trick performed by Andrew Jones latest design.

Nice looking speaker. Looking forward to the reviews to see if AJ addressed the few issues that were introduced with the 2.0 versions.

Reviews may be a while though because the Carina has been available to purchase for several weeks now yet we've not seen any "professional" reviews of that one yet.

Here is a nice review of the ELAC DBR62 updates from Andrew Jones:

I like the grilles...but I'm confused by the strategy. Is the cheap-cabinet Uni-Fi going away, with these in the same pricing ballpark and the Uni-Fi Slims as entry level concentric-driver speaker?

Still not a fan of front ported speakers, although the slot design does look a ton better. I do like his Carina bookshelf solution better with the down-firing port instead.

Or, make a "reference" bookshelf that has a proper port on the back because folks at the $500 level probably aren't slamming them right against a wall.

No Official PR Release for the Debut Reference Series?

Is it unusual for ELAC to present the new Debut Reference series speakers the way they have at the Rocky Mountain Audio Festival and at CEDIA while making no mention of them on their own web site? The most recent update on their "Press Releases" page is from 2017.

I can tell you from experience that what is not unusual is for Andrew Jones to show up with a new speaker that he literally was putting the finishing touches on, while packing for the show. That typically means that he is showing a speaker well in advance of when it is going to ship.

I watched the video a few days ago, but I think I remember it said November time-frame. I'm interested in testing them against the B&W DM303s I've had for almost 20 years. Now I have a room large enough for something like the DFR52. I wonder if a center channel speaker will launch with them.

Actually, my experience has been that the folks in the $500 level (mid-level Best Buy type consumers) slam these speakers wherever there's room and most often it's on a bookcase against the wall?

One of the reviewers at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest picked these speakers as his best of show..Cost-No-Object Category!

Doesn't it seem more realistic that the text under the image is a mistake and the real results are in the conclusion at the bottom? But that's just imho..

I've not really seen that with $500+ bookshelves. To a lot of people, $500 is an expensive speaker. Best Buy guy buys $100 Polks or maybe $200 Klips if he wants a "good" speaker.

What's amazing I've never seen a $500 speaker in the Best Speakers.. (For-The-Money) from (Absolute Sound Reviewers) EVER.. it's always been speakers that cost $5K and up!

So these new Elac speakers must be the real deal!

$500 seems like too much to me, especially if it's using the same woofer/tweeter (with only other improvements). $400 (+$100) seems more right for something like this. Will be interested to see how well this sells. How much more are the tower speakers?

It's a vastly more attractive and more expensive looking speaker though. I actually think the Debut bookshelf got "cheaper" looking when it went to the 2.0.

Is it $200 better looking? Yeah, I probably think so...especially since it offers improved sound (and everything else) as well.

Exclamation

Here's a video on these speakers.. Look in the comments below this video on You Tube, One person who listened to them at the show said these Elac speakers were better than some $12K speakers he heard at the show! Another person said they had some of the best imaging he heard at the whole show!

I also like the fact that the bookshelf is a 6.5" woofer vs the 5.25" that he's been using in the higher-line bookshelf models. I know it's been said that the 5.25" woofer ultimately might sound better, but the extra bass the 6.5" affords will be nice for a 2-channel system.

It's not $200 better looking, IMO. It's possible it could be $200 better sounding, but I'm skeptical since it uses the same drivers with the only improvements coming from how the drivers are implemented (i.e. different waveguide, different woofer chassis, better internal bracing, and better crossovers).

I'll be quite curious to see/read the reviews that compare it to the regular B6.2. I'm sure there will be a lot of such reviews.

I dunno...only $200 more seems like a decent bargain for this speaker. AJ seems to like the box/looks a lot better too.

Front slot port like on my Ushers.

Interesting as some have opined that front ports might present more port noise issues than rears.

Not that I've noticed any of that with my V602s even running full range.

I don't like the front port personally. Back or bottom would have been better IMO, but I'm also not a world-class speaker designer. I'm sure he figured out how to silence any port noise that might be there.

Yes, I agree. Front port noise is something I've never heard. I've owned the Debut B5.2s and other front ported speakers. I prefer front ported speakers because they're so much more forgiving with placement. AJ keeping the front port for the bookshelfs (and adding it to the floor standers) was/is the right move.

Peeps with small listening spaces like me like front ports. I can give no more than about a foot from a back wall and a foot from one side wall so these are perfect and are on my short list of Christmas presents for me
