Rear surround advice (Monoprice / RSL / Canton)

My front's are Paradigm 100's, with a cc-590. Paradigm is expensive for rears.

Looking at the following for rears (mounted BEHIND seating position - may go for 7.1.2 in the coming year or so)

Monoprice Caliber 6.5"
RSL W26
Canton 463 6.5"

So are you mounting these in wall or in ceiling?

If you potentially plan to go 7.1.2 may I suggest 5.1.4 instead? You'd get more enveloping sound with 4 Atmos speakers vs 2.

Assuming you're looking for in-walls, I've been using the Monoprice Calibers (the old 5.25" model) for over 10 years in our living room and have been very happy with them. Only thing I would like is a bit more extension, which the 6.5" or 8" would provide.

You might also look at the JBL SP6II https://www.jbl.com/loudspeakers/SP6...urrent#start=1 that are often on sale for ~$80/pair IIRC.

Sub builds: Yet another Infinity 1260 build | Twins! | Modified V.B.S.S. build | UM12-22 builds | AV stand and sealed UM18s

Speaker builds: DIYSG HTM-10 build | DIYSG Volt-6 build | DIYSG Fusion-8 builds

I'm sure you've been asked this more than a few times, as I have seen you recommend these at least a couple of times now. Are you aware of any comparisons of the DCMs to the Monoprice Calibers? Or other in-wall speakers in similar dimensions?

I've recently been looking to replace my surround/rear surround Calibers for something with a bit more extension to get a "fuller" surround experience (yes, I have subwoofers, listed in my sig) and wonder how they stack up.

Have DIYSG Volt-6 surrounds in another room and love them, but really can't place the same in the living room.

(Apologies for hijacking the thread)

Any experience with them? They look good on paper, I just haven't seen owner reviews comparing them with anything else.

Just their bookshelf speakers -- they are voiced to timbre/tone mach their Time-Piece speakers which I like -- the kevlar cone has good extension and takes some power ... they also have a Front Mounted Tweeter Level Control and Front Mounted Boundary Equalization Control ... and crossover looks to be 12 db octave for woofer and tweeter. ... the last street price was $179 each

For the price I'd get the DCM's. The JBL is about at the Arena level so not high end like the Studio series.

These will be in-wall. Instead of 4 ceiling atmos, could a front height speaker work plus 2 in-ceiling atmos?

Haven't used DCM or heard of them before. Are they fairly neutral in sound?

Yes, you can use 2 front height and 2 ceiling mounted speakers as 4 Atmos speakers.

I take it then that your rear in wall speakers are really surrounds in a 5.1 setup?

What receiver do you have by the way?

Yes - they are surrounds, while I also have options for atmos (cable pulled by builder).

Using Denon 4311

I think the 4311 can handle Dolby Atmos now. Not sure about DTS:X.

what the 4311 cannot do is pass a 4K HDCP 2.2 signal. The 4311 only has HDMI 1.4a and you need HDMI 2.0 or higher.

I plan to upgrade to a 4k receiver when I upgrade projector from the 1080p epson. Looks like the 4311 doesn't have atmos :-(
