KEF Q150 vs PSB Alpha P5

Hi all,

For a number of reasons, I am hesitating right now between these two options as fronts for a HT setup (mostly movies, with sub). I'm curious whether anyone here has done a comparison of the Alpha P5 and the Q150, and what were your impressions. I have found reviews for both (in general very good), but no cross-comparison. Do they sit in different categories?

I should mention that right now I can get both for the same price. Actually, the KEFs would be a little cheaper.

The Q150 are the better of those 2, the Alpha P5 measurements on Soundstage are nothing special. The Polk LSIM 703 is probably the best bang for the buck right now at the current sale prices but I had the Q150 for awhile and they are very good as well.

polk lsim 703 would be a better bang for buck proposition providing you like them , they are probably a pretty good bet to be easy to like as well... kef q150 or ascend cbm 170 would be my next choices...

Thanks! Unfortunately they are more than twice the price of the KEF and PSB. One of the (many) reasons I've narrowed it down to those two is that I'm in Canada, and prices or availability can be problematic up here. Same issue for the CBM 170, in cad with shipping and customs they are not competitive anymore.

Alright, two votes for the KEF so far! At 300 usd looks like it's a good deal.

I have a pair of Q150s that I haven't set up yet - I wish I could give you some insight on how they are, but I can say that they've been rec'd numerous times by a lot of people. FWIW I got mine through Visions.ca - you can get them directly from KEF as well (they have a Canadian portal for their store, so you pay Canadian prices without any of the import fees/etc... AFAIK).

Arguably, the CBM 170s are still competitive - after conversion with the current exchange rate, they're $391 CAD for the pair, which is pretty affordable IMO - unless it's outside of your budget, obviously. Shipping and duty might kill it as an option, though... which it usually does

Living in Canada sucks for this type of stuff - being Canadian, too, I 100% feel your pain. The LSiM 703s are still around $800-900/pair, which is ridiculous when you can literally get them for half of that price for a pair in the US. I just got an HSU ULS-15 MK2 subwoofer, and while it was worth the money because it's a piece of equipment I know I will never feel the need to replace (this thing is a beast of a sub), I certainly paid a much higher price once all of the conversions, fees, and shipping came into the equation. I also looked at a Salk + Rythmik sub as an investment piece, too, but even before shipping, etc... it would have been $2K CAD. I certainly entertained that idea, but I never got a response when I asked about what it would cost with shipping

In a perfect world where I do not have budget constraints, I'd probably have an entire set of Ascend Sierra 2EXs or some really nice Salks.

Yeah, I realized that last night about the KEF website, and no taxes either, it's 399 CAD all included. I think I'll just go that route, even though for returns purposes it's not the best option. My main concern about the KEF is actually about the center speaker option down the road: the Q250 is ridiculously expensive, and the option of getting another pair of Q150 to use one as a center is complicated by the fact that the space is very limited in my setup and it will be a challenge both in height and depth. Plus, I'd need to find someone to sell the second speaker to...

I actually emailed them two days ago to ask for a shipping quote, haven't heard back from them yet. But based on a comment I saw somewhere else in the forums, the shipping is steep, I very much doubt it will be less than 500...

Tell me about it... Choice and prices have gotten somewhat better with time in other categories, but for speakers it's seriously brutal.

I personally liked Kef a little more than the PSB, however I have not heard the new P5. If you plan on adding a center later, the Q650 is a very good speaker, however PSB will be more budget friendly. The Paradigm monitor series may be worth a listen as well.

KEF is one of the very few brands that us Canadians actually get a good deal on. Even better than the US

If you can fit the Q650C it's worth every penny over the Q250 and it's often on sale for $550-$599 CAD ($450 USD)

Speakers: KEF Q100, Q300, Q750, Q650C / Fluance Signature Series, SX6, XL5F/ Mirage M-190 / DCM TP160S-CH Subwoofers: Outlaw Ultra X12 (x2) / BIC H100-II

That new Q250C is a joke at $799 for a 2 way speaker with dual ABR's. The Q650 is much better.

The Kef website is the worst place to shop. The speakers are much cheaper in store, at least here in Canada.

Aside from the recent Q250C, All 2017 Q series speakers have been at the supposed sale price (2001 audio & Visions) since it was launched.

I have had the kef q150 and the psb imagine mini but have not heard the new aplha p5. The kef is a very nice speaker that has a smooth midrange with great top end detail. Loves to be turned up and plays well with all genres of music. Can be used without a sub and sounds very nice in nearfield as well. From what I have read in the past the psb imagine line is a step up from the old alpha line. Not sure about the new line as it gets rave reviews.

I also live in Canada and it really sucks that we don't have many options ( price wise ). I'll do a shout out to NHT, the only company that seems to have a little compassion for us Canucks. I went with 5 Superones and am quite happy and I know I didn't get gouged. Check out Amazon.ca.

The prices at other retailers I've looked at have been identical to what's on the KEF site. I have not looked around too much, though - I've really only come across Visions.

Yeah, I can't honestly say that I've seen any of the Q series speakers not on sale. They should really just permanently drop the price to $398 for the Q150s if they're just going to keep them on sale.

I have a pair of P3s that I am very happy with. They are my rear height speakers, and are better than the PSB Alpha A1s I have as front height. Can't compare to my Paradigm Prestige 15Bs tho... lol

Great deals can be found if you shop around. Gibby's, 2001 audio, Electronics for less and Visions always have something on sale. Everything in my setup was purchased at half price or close to it, Just not all at once.

What's interesting is that they are not on sale in the U.S., whether on kef.com or at places like Crutchfield. I see them at 600 USD, which is much, mure expensive than our current (and what you seem to say is a semi-permanent) price of 400 CAD. Weird.

We lose out on internet direct options since going that route would be no cheaper and in some cases more expensive than buying what's available locally.

Subwoofers is where we really lose out. SVS and Paradigm defiance are our best options locally and both are quite expensive.

This is just a general statement, I owned 2 pairs of Kef and even one Reference Series Center. The floor standing pair is the top of the line Uni-Q with dual 6" woofers ( I think). I bought them in early 90s for $1100. I also own a pair of big bookshelf for about $600. I think their name is bigger than the sound quality. I gave the Uni-Q to my stepson in 1998 after I bought a pair of JM Lab Spectral 913.1, it's a day and night difference. The Reference Series Center is NOT impressive at all. Now it's just serve as decoration on top of the TV. They all sound "SMALL" for the lack of words.

There's nothing wrong with the sound if you listen to the bass, mid and treble, they just don't have sound stage. I just roll Kef with Polk and Energy type of speakers.

I have a pair of tiny Monitor Audio Silver series bookshelf. It's smaller and cheaper than my Kef Bookshelf, but I think it sounds better.

Own designed power amp, own designed preamp, JM LAB Spectral 913.1 speakers, Rythmik F12SE sub.
Not hooked up: Nakamichi Stasis PA-7 power amp, Velodyne VA1210 sub, Kef Reference Series center, Kef Bookshelf speaker, Monitor Audio bookshelf speaker, Infinity rear speakers. Acurus 3X200W amp.

Agreed Pase. I've shopped at Gibby's , got a great deal on an amp and got the Focal Sib and Cub for next to nothing. I was just giving a shout out to NHT as one of the companies out their that seem to be a little more strategic in pricing when it comes to Canada, on the internet that is.

I've been toying with the idea of grabbing a pair of the P3s for front heights.

Oh my, just saw that the Q650 is more than 8.25in tall and almost 12in deep! Maybe I just need a new house...

The Polk CSi A6 is about that high (give or take 1/8") and 14 inches deep - it's 24 inches wide, too.

It doesn't use any ports so in a way it's easier to accommodate. You could put it inside a shelf unit unlike a ported design etc as long as you have it flush to the edge and slight angled up.

An update! For two CBM is 298 USD, and to get them sent to Canada I got a quote of... 134 USD! So 575 for the pair, almost a third of which in shipping. And that does not include GST/PST. Truly depressing.

In my experience with getting quotes from the US-based ID companies, that usually includes taxes/duty, so for $575 CAD, that's not that bad.

Edit: with the exchange it would be $565 CAD.

Hhhmm, interesting, they specifically said it did not include PST/GST.

Anyway, maybe I'll wait for when I spend a few days south of the border in January.
