Are you in the US?

If so where are you located in case there is a great manufacturer or vendor near you?

Stereo receiver or 5.1 receiver?

There are hundreds of options and you need to pare them down for us to recommend any to you. For instance:

- Size and shape parameters? Thin or narrow, or the usual bookshelf shape? Any particular finish requirements?
- Mounted on stands, on furniture, on wall, attached to TV wall bracket?
- How far away do you sit? How loud do you listen?
- Will you be using a subwoofer or just the speakers alone?
- Two speakers, or more?
- Have you done any listening sessions? Is there a specific sound signature you like/dislike?

That will help narrow the field a bit ...

It's a VIRTUAL channel unless stated otherwise.

Crutchdfield has the Denon's on sale. The X3500H has the better room correction software XT32 Audyssey but of course is the most expensive. If your are just doing 2 bookshelf speakers you probably don't need that high end of a receiver. .

Best Buy has some deals on speakers. You might want to bring a few pairs home and try them. Return the ones you don't like.

Without a sub the ELAC I mentioned at Best Buy would give you better low end then the KEF or Sony but would be good to try them in your own home.

Oh and if you wait a few weeks the ELAC's might go down to 150 a pair like they did last year.

Where in CA? If anywhere near LA, you are within driving distance of Ascend and Hsu headquarters where you could go listen. They're among the best internet-direct speaker makers around.

With a $1K budget you can get a pair of bookshelf speakers, a receiver, and a subwoofer too. If this is a music only system, the sub might be unnecessary but for HT it's essential unless you don't really watch action/thriller movies.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

HSU and Ascend are in Southern California, NHT is in Northern California.

All make solid speakers so if you can visit and audition that would be ideal.

Call before visiting to make an appointment.

If you plan on not using a receiver, then you want active speakers with an optical input and a remote.

Recommend the Swans M300: https://www.amazon.com/Swan-Speakers.../dp/B07C1TVLDX

Otherwise, I really like the Denon 3400 and 3500 for an AV receiver. Then, there are many speaker options.

Without a subwoofer, one of the fuller-sounding speakers in your price range will be the ELAC B6.2. Also look at the JBL 530 if you can swing them (sometimes they are on sale or there is a refurb available from Harman.com)

HT: Samsung PN64H5000 (recommended settings) | NAD T758 V3 | Buchardt S400 (2) | Polk LSiM 702 F/X (2) | Infinity RS152 (4) | Subs TBD (2)
PC: Micca OriGen G2 | Mackie MR624 (2)

If you're not planning on a sub, you should consider Emotiva T1's if you have the space. The towers will have better dynamics, more depth and deeper extension. It can't replace a sub, but will fill the gap a little.

This receiver should have everything you'll need and has good room correction.

I’m going to guess that they look better than they’ll sound.

I don’t see any mention of who OEM’s their drivers. And the front baffle is not treated in any way for diffraction effects.

At $549/pr there are definitely other options.

But do give them a try if you like and let us know.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

The Polk LSiM 703 is a very nice 3 way bookshelf speaker that will dig pretty deep in the low end without a sub. Available in Black or Cherry. $449 a pair

$550/pair or less?

Order the very well respected Focal Chorus 706 (French) and PSB Imagine XB (Canadian) from Crutchfield.

Return the losers for free as they will take the nominal $10/box return shipping fee per box out of the rewards points for the pair you choose to keep.

You have 60 days to audition/return.

The Focals are available in two different finishes.

Nothing beats auditioning at home.
