JBL 530s vs RP-600Ms

Hello everyone as the title suggests I need help with deciding betters the JBL 530’s and the Klipsch RP-600Ms.

I have the following system 7.2.4

Denon AVR-4500H
PB-3000 dual subs
RP-8000F pair L/R floor standing speakers
RP-500SA four upfiring elevation speakers
Outlaw 7000X 7 channel amp powering my mains.

Now here is where it gets interesting. I have a pair of Klipsch of RP-600M speakers as rear surrounds.

I saw a phenomenal deal at the JBL 530 speakers for $300 and I bought two pairs. I read many reviews that these speakers are very awesome and they have great sound. Obviously compared to the Klipsch price I decided to pull the trigger on these.

I was planning on using the 530s as rear surrounds and side surrounds to complete my 7.2.4 setup. Is this a good move? I heard that the JBLs have a harsher sound than the Klipsch speakers because they have horns. Should I keep the RP-600Ms and keep the line the same? I am interested to hear if there are any JBL owners.

Thanks for the help.

Thank you that’s the reason I went that way. I did hear that they produce a harsh sound in the highs. I have the rest of my setup with all klipsch and I was worried that the JBLs could distort my overall experience.

you have to try them in your setup to evaluate the differences, for surrounds you likely will have no issues , note: you might try them in a music set up as well at some point, lots of folks *really* like them for music...

Thanks I will give them a try. If there are any owners out there who use them as surrounds let me know your experience. Thanks for the reply.

I've found Klipsch to be harsh compared to JBL, but you'll probably have to compare them in your room to really tell the differences.

7.4.4 Theater Room: JVC-RS500, Silver Ticket AT 2.35:1 142”, Onkyo RZ830, Anthem PVA-7, Panasonic DBT-110, JBL Studio 530’s, 4 - 15" DIY Sealed Subs

3.1 Living Room: Samsung 64” F8500 Plasma, Anthem MRX 300, Dynaudio Audience 52’s, Dynaudio Audience 122C, NHT SubOne

as surrounds the difference will *likely* be unnoticed and for music the jbl's may be better to the op's ears.. it's a coin flip ,imo...

I know these are somewhat different than yours but in my experience, I bought a set of the JBL 308p mkii's and a set of the Klipsch The Sixes for use as my computer monitors.

The JBL's, which are basically new (2 weeks of use), I've been trying to sell for almost a year.

The Studio 530 are not harsh sounding -- they are one of the best that JBL has made

drop the price..., but actually that's a decent point , every speaker has pro's and con's , and fans and haters

I really wanted to like the JBL's because it's based off of the M2 design which is considered to be among one of the best.

With them you are paying for both the speaker and Amp in them -- there is only so much driver quality they can give you at that price which includes the amp.

The M2 thing is mainly about the tweeter wave-guide --- but the marketing hype is unique.

Good lord, those are going to be some very over-achieving surrounds!

It would be interesting to do some AB comparisons between the 530s and 600Ms as 2 channel mains for music, though.

For surrounds I doubt you'd actually notice much difference unless you do a lot of native-surround music listening.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

We attended the Thanksgiving tribute to Roy Hargrove and this afternoon we’re listening to Earfood on Studio 530s. We are not hearing this supposed horrible treble response at all. Trumpet and sax don’t sound any harsher than they did live 2 days ago. Pretty realistic piano, and the bass sounds good in conjunction with a MK sub.

I am also aware of this incredible JBL sale on the 530's and others (ending today I think). I am putting together a new small HT and was thinking about getting them for FLR but am a little concerned about how to fill out the rest of the sound stage as I have read that like Klipsch you really should not be mixing the brands in a 5.1 or 7.1 set-up (due to unique tonal qualities especially with both having horn tweeters). The reviews on the matching JBL center is not that good and they really don't have a specific surround speaker other than several more bookshelf speakers. I think they really are targeted for music listening as opposed to HT use with other speakers but I may well be wrong. I really want to get them but theses are my concerns. Appreciate any comments.

My take is that with HT use, it's not as important for the speakers to be matched as much as it is with music. I think JBL does make some ceiling speakers (maybe in wall's too) that use the same tweeter as the Studio 5 series, but they are in their Pro line and quite expensive. I'm using Polk surrounds with a dome tweeter for my surrounds with JBL Studio 530's for my three fronts and don't notice any change in sound as things pan in surround use. For serious multi channel music listening, I think it would be a bigger deal.

As Zorba pointed out both are more than adequate for surround duty and highly doubt you would be able to tell a difference in that usage. Used for mains you'd just have to compare and choose what was more pleasing to your ears. I have not listened to the JBLs but from what I have read it's a lateral move from one to the other.

I would keep them the same system. That is what I just did, I have three 590 across the fronts for LCRs. I have klipsch 502s and rp500m for sides and rears. I wasn’t even thinking about buying the 530s but after thought I just bought two pair for sides and rears. I will sell my klipsch they are last then a year and a half old.

Thanks for everyone’s comments on the matter. I have not had a free time to test the 530s but based on everyone’s responses, I think I will keep them. Thanks again.

Did you went ahead with the purchase? What are your thoughts so far compared to your old Klipsch speakers?

I did buy them they just came in and I haven’t had time to set them up. I will be replacing sides and tears so I don’t expect a huge difference. I will say I took my rp500 downstairs to my living room system which has svs ultra bookshelves speakers and I really like the svs over the 500.
