Beginner's level speaker setup

Hey guys,

I'm not looking for a super low budget solution here, but just some practical suggestions:

I have a PC connected to a beamer being my very basic home theater. Now I'm looking ot improve sound.

Since I don't want to have cables lying all around my living room, I'm really just thinking to have 2 decent speakers connected to my PC as the sound system. I want the speakers behind me, because that's how I can put the cables nicely to the PC which is next to me.

What kind of speakers would you recommend and since I've so far been using on board sound, I probably need some advice on sound cards too.

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions!

Thanks!
Jakob

I'm a bit baffled by the idea of wanting a projected image in front of you and all of your audio behind you but if that's how you want it a couple of options include:
- powered bookshelf/desktop speakers (Audioengine, etc.); or
- a good soundbar.

Is a "beamer" a projector?

(To me, it's a BMW motorcycle. A Bimmer is a BMW automobile.)

Speakers behind you is really not a good idea. You would get better sound from a good pair of headphones in that case, like the $100 Grado SR80.

Otherwise, all you need is a single long USB cable between your PC and this paperback book sized $145 mini-amp under your screen, or connect to it using BlueTooth:
https://www.amazon.com/SMSL-AD18-Amp.../dp/B071JN7GXN

And a good pair of passive speakers flanking the screen. What's your budget?

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

I've owned three Beamers since 1987 but none of them a boxer engine strangely enough.

But I have to agree with the consensus that having the speakers behind you would be poor, but having then one either side (like one on each end tabpe) would be ok; at least one AVS member did that with good results.

A pair of self powered Kali LP6s are just $300 and available at Guitar Center or Sweetwater.
