5.1 for $500??

Got $500 for a 5.1 or maybe a 7.1 system. I have a onkyo tx-sr500 receiver. But I might upgrade it soon. My room is 13.5x19.5. One gentleman recommended DCM towers, center, and surrounds along with a JBL 300 watt 10” sub. I wish I could find some DCM speakers locally to listen too, but it’s not an option. I could very well go with this set up but I’d like to hear a couple more options in the price range. So, what say you guys?

Sony Cores at 75 a pair but they are not as good as the DCM. Would be hard to find anything that is better for the price.

This JBL sub is on sale

Stick with the DCMs + JBL sub, unless you want to do 3 x Sony Core bookshelves + JBL sub.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

The sound quality you're getting for a pair of DCM towers and center will be very hard to beat at even twice the price. Surrounds mostly provide ambient sounds and background music so matching them is far less critical. In order to Maximise your budget (maybe a little over) I would get 2 of those JBL subs and just get a pair of used speakers from your local pawn shop or Craigslist for $25-30. Dual subs will even out the bass throughout the room and will also give you up to a 6db down low. Dual subs will be far more beneficial than matching surrounds.

Went with DCM. Got a 5.1 system with dcm towers, center, and surrounds along with the jbl sub. Still in boxes. Need some speaker wire. What is the minimum here? 14 Awg or bigger? I also picked up an onkyo 604 for a little extra power over the 506 I had. Will move on to looking for some Owens Corning 703 panels soon. Is there a big box store that stocks those? Shipping on them is ridiculous. Thanks guys for the help!

The cost on speaker wire is good -- so at least 14 awg pure copper wire

Have you talked to Lowes or Home Depot about the 703 panels?

I’m in Lowe’s at this minute, but it seems no one works here...

The guy I need has left for the night. Looks like I’ll be back on the next basketball free night, which is Sunday. Lol

Get the cheapest 14g speaker cable you can get that's 100% copper - if you go with copper clad cable go one size up (12g). Monoprice has good prices but there are other sources.

For 703 you may try a drywall supplier. If you can't find any and are on a budget, I've seen people use other material including Armstrong acoustical ceiling tiles.
