Subwoofer recommendations

I don't know where to begin, I have not shopped speakers in years. My JBL S120 PII died today. I get two red lights, they won't go green. I tried another receiver and cable to make sure it's the sub and it is.

My setup is 5.1, ProAc Super Towers (fronts), ProAc EBT's (rear). It's mainly used for watching movies and TV shows.

I would like to not spend more than $700 although something really close but a bit more is doable if it's worth it.

LG 65C9 OLED, Pioneer VSX-LX503 receiver, Pronto TSU-9400 remote
Speakers: ProAc Super Towers/front, ProAc EBT's/rear, Polk S35/Center, JBL S120PII subwoofer
HTPC: Shield Pro 2019, Kodi
Storage: Synology DS2415+, TheCUS N5550 running DSM 6.2 via Jun's loader

If you can stretch a little, an HSU VTF-3 MK5 would be a great addition to your setup. If you're staying within budget, a VTF-2 MK5 would be a good option. The Rhthmik LV12F is also highly regarded, especially if you want good musical performance.

Still spinning my head on what to get. I looked at those plate amps I don't think it's worth it. The JBL is old, most likely the surround foam will be next to go so I want to get a new sub.

I updated my first post, I can go higher than $600. It seems around $700 gets more more choices.

My slight concern is the waiting period. With the virus situation some shops are closed/limited operations. HSU from their web site is open only two days a week and could be backlogged. So if I were to order from them it's possible it won't be shipping quickly.

Would the SVS PB-2000 be a contender? $700 with free shipping.

LG 65C9 OLED, Pioneer VSX-LX503 receiver, Pronto TSU-9400 remote
Speakers: ProAc Super Towers/front, ProAc EBT's/rear, Polk S35/Center, JBL S120PII subwoofer
HTPC: Shield Pro 2019, Kodi
Storage: Synology DS2415+, TheCUS N5550 running DSM 6.2 via Jun's loader

I only buy subwoofers from companies know for subwoofers. HSU, Outlaw, PSA, SVS, Rythmiks...

I won't buy a sub based on some height restriction...is their anywhere else you can put the sub which would have this 8 inch restriction? 8 inch is a tiny sub...no mater what dimension you are talking!

Set up #1: EMP e5Ti, e5Ci, and EMP e5Bi surrounds, Outlaw LFM1 Plus sub, SVS NSD SB12 sub, Integra AV receiver
Set up #2: Def Tech CA Aero 2, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and EMPtek10i10i sub, Slimline AV receiver
Set up #3: Philharmonics- BMR in a 2.0 system, music only, Integra AV receiver

I would consider KEF Kube 12B

Unless u want to break glass, Kube is quite a good tight sub. Great for music actually

There is no restriction in size, you mis-read the post. The other member wants me to replace my amp in the JBL, the JBL has an 8" opening for the plate amp.

The PB-2000 is a great sub and currently on sale, I don't think you'll find anything better for $700.

The VTF3-MK5 is better, but it's $200 more with shipping.

The Monolith 12" is $800 shipped, but I don't know if it's worth $100 more than the PB-2000.

SVS has amazing customer service and you can ship it back on their dime if you don't like it.

SVS charges tax, HSU does not. That adds another variable.

VTF-2 MK5 total cost is $611
PB-2000 total cost is $748.

I'm no expert when it comes to audio equipment but found the SVS PB-2000 to be quite amazing. I purchased it a couple of weeks ago after doing about two months worth of researching between multiple subs and expert reviews. Due to the $100 price drop, no hassle returns with free return shipping, highly regarded customer support, and with a one year upgrade trade in, the PB-2000 won out over the HSU VTF-2 MK5 for me. With that said if my choices were only the SVS PB-2000 PRO or PB-3000 I may have just gone with either the HSU VTF-2 MK5 or even better the VTF-3 MK5 due to my current budget restraints. If my primary purchase was listening to music rather than watching movies I would have taken the advice given to me earlier and gone with the Rythmik LV12F which is currently on back order. I'm sure their all incredible subs but for me I went with SVS and I'm pretty happy with it so far. In the next few weeks I will likely get another matching sub for a dual setup.

Let us know how you like it! I recommend doing the sub-crawl method to locate the best position in your room. There's also a great list of bass-heavy movies stickied in this sub-forum that you can try.

I do want to thank everyone for your input. This is was an unexpected big purchase. I have not shopped subs in 15+ years and had no idea what was out there. And I did not want to spend days/weeks researching this.

I am thinking maybe I will buy a super cheap amp for that JBL and stick it in the bedroom. I have two Mirage speakers in there on the dresser with a very small amp from S.M.S.L that has a subwoofer output. It's connected to a Chromecast audio that I stream music to from my Google Home.
