You can see my setup in my signature below. The upgrade scenario I'm faced with is simple, should I upgrade my q 650c to an r2c? Kef reps claim the r2c is better in every way, But here are my concerns:

1) I know the clarity and resolution will be better with the r2c, but as it is a smaller speaker with smaller drivers, will it sound smaller for movies?

2) Will I buy the r2c, only to see the r6c released in a couple months? Obviously, an r6c would be better in every way undoubtedly. Kef reps claim there are no plans for a r6c.

3) I absolutey love the sound of my r3s,but something I really liked going from the q350s to the r3's is that the r3's sounded bigger, among other things. Will the r2c give me that satisfaction?

I would love to hear your thoughts. Especially from someone that made the jump from the q650 to the r2c.

Thanks!

Edit: It interesting to see that the r2c is 7 pound heavier than the q650c.

I had this almost near-exact debate last month. I went with the Q650c in the end. In short: keep the Q650c. FWIW I don't think the R2c would sound "smaller" than the Q650c.

Hahaha, I remember, I advised you to do the same, but then I reached out to kef. They claimed the r2c would be better in every way. Me thinks there is a little bias there, but im not sure.

I got the same response from KEF when I asked them to offer feedback between the two CCs. It was a bit PR-speaky to me, but I don't think they were wrong. Objectively, the R2c is the better speaker. And the person didn't discount the Q650c entirely - they did say that the 650c was a phenomenal speaker.

No doubt the q650 is phenomenal, I think I am more interested in having an all r series front stage than I am in replacing the q650. The q is great, but I'm intrigued as to what an r center would sound like with the r3's, if that makes sense. For surround and atmos, I doubt I would even be able to tell if I switched to the r series, not worth the Money.

The R2c is a true 3 way speaker. The Q650c is a two and half way. One of the woofers is actually a passive radiator. Additionally the R2c utilizes the same uni q driver as the R3. The 650c uses the larger driver. I would not think on it for a second and I'd go with the R2c. It will match the R3 perfectly.

I'm sure it will match very well. I guess I just wish there were more reviews of it. Maybe someone could chime in here about the r2c? How does it sound? How well does it keep pace with the rest of the r line?

The Q650c has a single 6.5" driver with a passive base radiator. The R2C has dual 5.25" drivers, higher resolution, better detail & clarity. The R2C is the clear winner!

Thanks for the insight! I’m getting very Close to pulling the trigger. Now I’m trying to think about what I could do with the q650 if I get the r2c. I just got the 650 in the fall of 2018.

Sell it, I imagine. Fall of 2018 seems like ages ago haha.

Other option could be to use it as a back surround if your AVR will allow that configuration (it seems to be sort of an option with my SR6014, at least).

If you already have it, keep it! It's a very good speaker that will give excellent detail and clarity for HT. When listening to music you'll only use the FL/FR speakers so problems there.

If starting from scratch and trying to choose between the R2C or Q650C, I'd take the R2C. Since you already have the Q650c, may as well keep it because it is a very competent speaker. unless of course you're unhappy with the Q650c.

I know, my current setup is fine, and the q650 is a good speaker. I originally planned to keep it and wait for an r6c, but it seems like that isn’t happening. Regardless, my only reason that I didn’t want to go with the r2c was because I thought, although I would gain clarity and resolution, I would lose dynamics. Kef and r2c owners on the forum are telling me that’s not the case. If this is the only center the r line has, KEF must have made it to keep up with the big boys, despite its smaller size. Three other things I noticed recently is that it’s 7 pounds heavier than the q 650, it has three active drivers instead of 2 and a passive radiator, and it not that much smaller of an enclosure than the q650 ( it’s in between the size of the q650 and q250). It’s starting to look more and more like this speaker is superior to what I have in every way, not a gain in one aspect (clarity and resolution) but a loss in another (dynamics). There is nothing wrong with my q 650; it’s an excellent center. It’s more of my love for the r3s and wanting a matched front stage. I’m perfectly fine with q series for surrounds and atmos. In fact, my q350s are already overkill for rear channels in my opinion.

Same size as the Q250c, but with a better cabinet, dual low frequency drivers and a better uni-q assembly. You could probably get a decent return on the Q650 to help offset the cost.

That would be nice, not sure where to go to sell though. I usually sell to my family, but I think that well has dried up by now, haha

Then just keep your Q650, and never visit this forum again or you will only get infected with more totally needless and costly upgrade impulses.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

Honestly, best advice I’ve received, haha. Just think of the money I could have saved if I didn’t join over a decade ago.
