JBL Studio 590

Hey guys. Looking to get some floorstanding speakers. Was wanting to get the JBL Studio 590's. I know these go on sale from time to time for half off. Does anyone know when these usually go on sale? Thanks

They were just on sale like a week or two ago, so I'd expect to see them again on sale around maybe Labor Day, but it could really be any time. You can set up a Slickdeals notification so you're updated when the price drops.

I'd say that's right. To the OP, go for it. I run the 590's and love them. Very competitive at the sale price.

Every time this sale comes around my love of speakers and desire to hear the 590s have a wrestling match with my wallet and common sense. The 590s would take up so much space of my not-very-big viewing area and my F35s already sound fantastic but dang do I still want to get a pair. I have some 530s and really enjoyed them in the theater area (they're currently my desk speakers).

If you like the 530s you'd love the 590s. I don't know how they would compare to the F35s but I don't find the 590s lacking in any area in particular. Just a great all around speaker.

i'm currently fighting the itch to grab the 530's.. i bet they sound nice , but i really don't want to just grab a pair of speakers that aren't an upgrade from what i have now.. this sideways "upgrade" trend some do on here makes me nervous.. but, if anything in audio could be turned over quickly my guess is the 530's are it..

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

Just furthers my belief that this should be the correct price of those speakers. Same with the Infinity Reference. If Samsung (Harman) actually got these speakers into stores, they may out-sell Klipsch.

Whats everyone's opinion of the 580 versus the 590? I know the differences, 2 way versus 2.5 way adds a curious wrinkle. So a little background, Im currently running DCM towers with a C1 center for my front end based on recommendations here from the forums speaker guru's. They sound great. However, I have been kicked out of my living room to a bonus room to play HT by the wif. She's not tolerant of loud noises, especially bass. My new room is just a hair over 5,500 cubes, on concrete... My options are to replace the DCM's with a sound bar in the living room ro leave them and get a new front end for the new HT room. I do tend to listen loud. The DCM's will get to almost 85Db constant (using an android phone app) with no noticeable distortion (no REW/UniMic, yet). I have 2-FV18/PC on order waiting for the boat to arrive in July. The beniefit to the sound bar (I vomit a bit every time I type that) is I get to take the Yamaha with me. Im not sure I need the 590's or do I? I had a full Infinity reference system in the cart but missed the sale. Thoughts?

I haven't heard the 580 vs the 590 so I can't speak to that. I am of the opinion that a larger speaker, even with the same crossover to the subs, can produce a more smooth transition. Just my opinion and IME. That being said, your new room is massive and on concrete. You're going to need a lot of bass. You mention you like to listen loud but honestly 85dB isn't too terribly loud if we're talking about music. Personally when I crank it up I'm hovering at 90-91 and that's plenty for me for a song. There's a 2dB difference in sensitivity according to JBL, 90 for the 580 and 92 for the 590. The 590s don't break a sweat at all and my ears tell me I need to turn them down before they even think of compressing or showing a hint of sibilance. I am in the process of calibrating and testing a new HT with the 590's as mains and they are ridiculous with the dynamic range of which they are capable. I think you need the 590's.

Thank you for the input. I was a hair off on my space calc. 4,830 cubes. I think I can always turn the 590's down if needed. Better then running 580's at 90% all the time for sure.

I think you'll find the JBL to be a superior speaker for SQ and you won't have to push your AVR as hard either if you decide to really turn things up. The space is still very large. Depending on your preferences you might still want some more bass in there but hopefully you'll be set for a long time with that setup!

speaking of which .. did you run the 530's with an avr?.. how were the dynamics? i assume (contrary to some info i read) that the 530's aren't really all that hard to drive and an avr should be fine..

I ran mine with an Onkyo NR656 and the dynamics were great in both games and media viewing. That said if you're REALLY pushing the volume the woofer will (predictably since it's a 5.25") run out of steam before the tweeter does, which leads to dynamic compression of the woofer's range. Important to note though that while I was able to observe this through extreme stress testing at volumes much louder than I ever actually listen it never occurred during actual usage.

i figured as much.. seems like every"expert" type i talk to disregards avr's as legit amps... i've never had my avr run outta steam in practical use... the modded b1's do stress my avr a bit.. i figure with an 80-90 hz crossover those woofers will be fine..

And therein lies the rub: most of the aspiring or self-identified "experts" in this hobby rely on totally UNREALISTIC testing parameters.

I ended up testing mine with my AVR. They were just fine but they definitely did not sound as clear at higher volumes as they did with the full setup. It wasn't distortion, my best effort to describe it would be the dynamics were more effortless with the dedicated amp? Not really sure how to describe it. They definitely didn't sound bad by any stretch, mind you. I believe it is a difference that most people would be able to detect.

Sounds to me like the avr didn't have the same punch as your other amp..understandable.. It a tough call.. Do i grab the 530s or wait for it he elac dbr62 to go on sale .. I get the feeling the elacs are a bit better , but i know it's probably a matter of diminishing returns..

Yeah, we're talking about an older...maybe $300 Yamaha AVR vs. a dedicated pre/pro and a $1500 Bryston amp. Just more...control is maybe a good word.
I wouldn't hesitate to get the 530's. I can't imagine anyone not liking them, there aren't any glaring deficits anywhere according to my ears. Haven't heard the Elacs but I have read that they are good speakers also. We all know that "better" is subjective, too, just depends on your preferences. Why not go ahead and get the 530's? You can always return them, I think they have free returns. If you get the Elacs from Crutchfield you could return those, too if you don't like them as much. Eating a little return shipping cost is well worth it to make sure you get what you really want.

all very true .. the 530's are probably a nice option for me .. i'm at this time trying to get it right on the first try .. no car so getting to a ups/ fed ex store is tough.. i was trying to confirm thru email that i could arrange a home pick up , but no response yet from jbl.. i do know that if i buy the elacs thru amazon i can get free returns and i think home pick up as well.. it's a tough call .. i could hold out for another nht c series sale too, i'm sure they would be ok.. luckily i have decent stuff to listen to now.. my emo b1 mods are here to stay .. i can listen to the ascend cbm's , but i need a break from them every so often.. my reg. b1's are ok , but they sound veiled and fuzzy compared to the mods.. 1st world problems..lol
