I agree with the others who posted. You paid for new speakers. Even the slightest scratch is a grounds for return. The items should come to you as if they were handled with kid gloves. Don't settle for anything less. You paid good money for very nice speakers. You have the right to own flawless speakers that you can be proud of.

I truly know what your going thru, I received mine a couple years ago and one box had a hole in it like the tow motor forks stabbed thru it.
Sure enough the whole side was scratched deep so I contacted the dealer sent pics and they fedex'ed a new one and had it in 2 days.

My main gripe about Polk and their boxes is that crap styrofoam they use, Its the worst quality ever. I've bought plenty of other speakers and these for the weight and awkwardness you think they'd package them better. I quit saving these packages to retransport cause its easier just to wrap these with a few moving blankets/pads.

Spoiler!

The Styrofoam, while of inferior quality, stood the test and the speakers are in immaculate condition. All in all, it was a great deal from Stereo Advantage (via Amazon) at $358 total for the pair.

No response from Adorama customer service. Maybe they're closed on the weekend.

On a lighter note, the LSiM 703s are gorgeous and quite a step up from my def tech PM800s. Can anyone recommend some stands that match the quality and design aesthetics of the 703s? I'd prefer some that I can add sand to.

It's a big risky thing having super large heavy speakers shipped via UPS. They should have put them all on a pallet and shrink wrapped them and sent via freight.

They sent 2 UPS guys to the house to pick up the towers. Supposedly, they will take them back and do the "investigation" off-site as part of the UPS claim. I haven't heard anything since they picked them up on Thursday. I'm in no hurry so I can be patient.

Those of us who bought and they arrived safely feel bad for you. It's always a risk buying fragile items. Hope it works out to your satisfaction in the end.

Cool. Definitely reach out to her if you get no satisfaction, but I've dealt with Adorama with expensive photography equipment and never an issue. Good luck.

I got my 707s from Crutchfield and it came by one of those freight carriers and I do believe they were on a pallet.

You didn't file claim did you? I thought the seller had to do this.

Shipping large speakers in boxes with breakable foam is a risk. Sending them via UPS really adds to the overall handling drama. My boxes looked fairly beat up but the packing held the speakers in pristine condition. Most of the foam had broken but still provided support. I think the majority of people getting them from Adorama had a good experience in the end.

UPS picked up my 705 today. One of mine was damaged during shipping as well.... Both magnetic covers were damaged as well. I sent one back with the damaged 705, Adorama said they will try to locate a replacement for the other.

"Try to locate a replacement"! Well that doesn't sound very promising for my case as well. These towers will be the basis for my entire surround sound system so I have to have them or else the rest won't work for timbre matching. I better get on the phone with Adorama first thing tomorrow before all of these are gone!

The current sales prices are very attractive and, using an appropriate universal swivel mount, you could aim them properly to suit your seating arrangement.

I used to have a set of TL2's with a Monitor setup and loved them for their small footprint, quality of build, and affordability.
I recently snagged the LSiM707 speaker package deal from Adorama and now I’m looking into atmos. Prior to reading this thread I was going to go with Polk OWM3’s to use as upfiring atmos speakers (can’t mount on the ceiling) but now I’m wondering if I should use the TL3’s instead. Any suggestions?

The least desirable option would be using DAE speakers to bounce the sound off the ceiling.

I am stuck between DAE speakers and possibly the high up side wall option. Just to confirm, if I use the side wall option I should mount the atmos speakers up where the wall meets the ceiling a few feet I front of the MLP and then angle the speaker to the MLP or should they be aimed in front of the MLP? And then do the same for the rears, just behind the MLP? I’m either going to use OWM3’s or TL3’s with my 707/706 front speakers and my OWM3 rear surrounds.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Yeah they said they would try to locate a replacement magnetic cover for the speaker that arrived mostly undamaged except for the speaker cover. I'm assuming they will be sending a replacement speaker after UPS claims responsibility for the damages.

If the UPS workers would have just taken a bit more care, (not rammed a foreign object through the side of the box in my case......) and used a dolly to move the 705's around we wouldn't be here. But I know it was Christmas season and I know they were all wide open.

You know I was thinking, Adorama could actually profit from this. If UPS pays Adorama retail price for the damaged speakers, that's probably at least 3 times what Adorama has in them lol....

Not suggesting that you try to get double the replacement grilles, but you could also contact Polk Audio customer support. In the past they have been very accommodating in supplying replacement parts free of charge or at minimal cost--sometimes even outside the generous warranty periods. I speak from personal experience and also based on anecdotal reports in this thread.

In the past they have been very accommodating in supplying replacement parts free of charge or at minimal cost--sometimes even outside the generous warranty periods. I speak from personal experience and also based on anecdotal reports in this thread.
Nice, thanks! I'll keep that in mind, especially if the replacement speaker arrives with a damaged grill. Trying to be optimistic, but as you know it doesn't take much to damage these grills.

I would advise against trying to use any ordinary speakers to "bounce" the sound off the ceiling. Dolby Atmos Enabled (DAE) speakers use special signal processing to produce a psychoacoustic effect of the sound emanating from overhead. When you designate your height speakers as "Dolby Atmos" the AVR's processor accounts for this factor (AIUI). See also the attached Dolby white paper for a more thorough explanation.

And then do the same for the rears, just behind the MLP? I’m either going to use OWM3’s or TL3’s with my 707/706 front speakers and my OWM3 rear surrounds.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
When mounting speakers overhead for immersive audio, the first consideration should be the speaker's elevation angle relative to the MLP. With two pairs of overheads, the ideal placement would be approx. 45° elevation fore and aft (i.e., front pair at 45° and rear pair at 135°) roughly in line with your front L/R speakers. The simplest way to determine these positions is to measure the distance from your ears to the ceiling while seated at the MLP and then mark off that same distance on the ceiling to the front and the back of the MLP.

Unless your room is very short in depth, wall-mounting--even at the juncture with the ceiling--will typically result in a much lower elevation angle. (See also the below diagram that shows the recommended elevation angle ranges for the various overhead speaker designations.) Unless you can achieve a minimum of 30° to 35°, the results are likely to be significantly compromised in that a clear vertical separation between the listener-level and overhead-level speakers is essential to creating the immersive effect.

Nonetheless, if you choose to wall-mount your speakers, do try to get them as high up as possible and then designate them in your AVR as Front Height and Rear Height (exact nomenclature will vary among manufacturers). You will want to orient them just as you would the rest of your speakers--i.e., toward the MLP unless there are room-centric considerations that mitigate against it.

Yes, I know. But then, they ARE very nice grilles as befits the quality of the LSiM line.

FWIW, one of the LSiM703's I ordered from Adorama arrived with a bent grille. I notified Adorama and they offered me a $50 discount for the damage. Subsequently, it occurred to me to contact Polk Audio CS, and they sent me a free replacement grille. Win/win for me!

I agree with chiguy's reply. The only thing I would add is when placing the speakers high up on the side walls you should aim them at the opposite end of the MLP. For example, the left front height speaker would be aimed at the furthest right seat and the right front height speaker would be aimed at the furthest left seat. This way you help to make sure that all seats will be able to hear all of the speakers and not just the speakers closest to them. Also, the closer speaker should not be overpowering if aimed at the opposite seat.
