Do you plan on using a center? Do you have one? Or just do a phantom center?!
Fair enough, ill wrestle the speakers into a slightly different position.
Right now, I have a MartinLogan Motion 8 (also a thrifty buy for $40), but have been STRONLY advised to ditch it due to how it is so unmatched to my polks. I hooked it up, but it didn't sound bad, so I am torn. I would love an A6 center, but I am also debating getting a better AVR to support the output to my existing speakers. Admittedly, I don't plan on using many of the features of an AVR (I don't have any separate HDMI devices, so no pass through needed - audio will go through optical out from the TV), but its not to say I wont use them if I have them (I have never owned a dedicated AVR before, so I am not used to what such a system can do for me). So far, I have found a few candidates (but these are really budget stretching:
Denon -980H ($259)
780H ($208)
X2200W ($200 or less - might be able to negotiate this one a bit).
If I got even more expensive, I might be able to get a Yamaha RX-A870 for $260, or A880 ($320) (but these require some negotiation).

If you're happy with your current center, I'd use it till you feel the need to upgrade. Check out accessories 4 less, lots of options for avr. They are returns but I've bought my last three from there. All in new shape.

I guess the question is - should I look at any ferubs () or anything else in the first place? I mean, to my very untrained ears, my A9s sounded amazing, but I am sure I can get more out of them. Problem is, I am not sure if what is in my price range is worth it for the speakers (since I haven't even had my A5s and A9s singing together yet...).

Not knowing what your price range is, I still refer to you to AC4L. You might stumble across a smoking deal like I did when I snagged my Integra Pre.

Sounds good, I'll check it out for sure.

BTW: i found the thread that originally made me worry about damage:
https://forum.polkaudio.com/discussi...e-60-vs-rti-a9
https://forum.polkaudio.com/discussi...rtia9-receiver

The people in the threads sound so dire about it too. Ant idea why they are so over the top there?

You mean regarding power to the A9'?

If so, the A9's three woofers suck up a ton power with todays audio tracks with LFE. If you're setting them to full or large, they will demand power for LFE.

Getting an AVR with high power will help. Any AVR with pre-outs to add an external amp will be even better. For the time being, just don't listen too loud You should be okay.

Another consideration is to set the A9's to 40hz in your AVR so you are not using the woofers to full capacity. You could even set them to like 60 or 80hz and be totally safe. Now your AVR will only be powering the top section of the cabinet: the midrange and tweeter section. You will be safe from all harm

Can anyone tell me what the actual frequency response of the RTi A1 speaker is? A lot of places seem to indicate that it's 60hz - 26Khz, I've seen BestBuy list it as 50hz - 27Khz. Polk lists two frequency responses:

  • Total Frequency Response 50 Hz → 27,000 Hz
  • Lower and Upper -3dB Limits 60 Hz → 26 Hz

If you have the rtia9 I wouldn't worry about it. Typically no one level matches the stuff when they rerun calibration so they play louder which translates into better sounding or woke up.

It will also depend how far you sit from them how your room treats base. sometimes you might have calibration able to deal with a room mode when more power is available.

An interesting little WOW...for me that is

@climber07 , Dave, the other day my daughter and I were watching a movie, can't quite remember which one, but....I saw a little blue light spark up on one of my stereo amps, you know, the 'ol XPA-2. I backed up the movie and replayed and sure enough, the blue light make it's appearance again. I had to check to see which speaker was linked to that channel.

It was the left Surround, FXiA6. The left one is a little further away then the right. I haven't seen any blue, much less red lights in quite some time.

I miss my systems potential One day amigo, one day, I'll even have my subs involved again

So, following up on the suggestions, I managed to trade some other equipment for a "Sonance The Sub" Thx Subwoofer " - https://www.cnet.com/products/sonanc...sub-subwoofer/
I know it's an older unit, and not as powerful as others. But given my living location, i am hoping it will be useful at least. And if it takes load off my A9s, even better. I also found a smoking deal on an RX-730, and so returned my RX-A710. Not a huge change, but at least slightly newer.

A4L has had polk speakers in the past for deeply discounted pricing. I check the site every month. If you keep an eye out you might find a great deal on more than just avrs.

I hear ya @Geoff4RFC . I was rewatching X-Men Apocalypse last night with my son at around -18dB MV and the house was rockin'. My son was like "wow daddy, rewind that and play it again"! I, of course, had to oblige.

Speaking of deeply discounted prices, I just saw a few minutes ago that Polk eBay Direct has RTiA series at 40% off and LSiM series at 50% off right now. And Adorama on eBay is selling the LSiM 706c more than 60% off @ $460. All brand new, not factory refurb. I’m not in the market right now as I just bought a house 8 months ago but I may buy one of those centers from Adorama anyway, at that price!

Fronts: LSi7
Center: LSiM 706C
Surround: LSiF/X
Sub: Infinity BU-2 - Don't judge me, it was free.
AVR: Denon X3100W, Adcom GFA-7000 5-channel amplifier

I know it's an older unit, and not as powerful as others. But given my living location, i am hoping it will be useful at least. And if it takes load off my A9s, even better. I also found a smoking deal on an RX-730, and so returned my RX-A710. Not a huge change, but at least slightly newer.
RE: the Yammie receiver... I currently run a Denon but liked my RX-A720 a lot. I had to upgrade when I upgraded to LSi speakers, which are 4 ohm and can’t properly be run without extra amplification... so be aware that the Aventage 700 series does NOT have pre-outs for connecting additional outboard amplification. The 800 series is the minimum you can get that will give you that capability. And judging by what Geoff and many others have said about their RTiA9s, you’re eventually very much going to want to get an amp for those beasts in order for them to meet their potential.

I would think that you should be able to find an early model RX-A800 series for not that much more than the 700s you’re using now.

A visit to the actual Adorama home page shows all the LSiMs more than 50% discounted... close to 60% on the 705s and 707s, 52% on the 703s. Plus that brilliant price for the centers.

For what its worth, I ended up getting an A880 that was refurbed for $320. As it is right now, I love my setup, and it gets plenty loud for the condo I am in. Maybe in a few years, when I have a house, I will look for a separate amp to drive them harder.. but for now, I am plenty happy.

I wish I had your magic. The 880 refurbs I was just looking at are $550 and 870s for $430. $320 is a really amazing price.

If you think that is magic, I probably shouldn't tell you about the Vienna Acoustics Bachs that I found for $50, or the Panamax MR4000 for $25 (Bach's at salvation army, MR4k at a pawn shop in the back)...
