I like 13th Step - a lot. Every song is great and it’s a more unique sound that wasn’t trying to be Tool. I think Howerdels vision for APC is seen more clearly in 13th then Mer De Noms. His musical development & maturity with bringing in melodies interwoven into the rock infused sound almost reminiscent of Billy Corigan and James Iha’s Smashing Pumpkins albums without biting on the pumpkins the way Silversun Pickups does, and (again) a further departure from Tools sound. I think makes this a great album.
I won't disagree. 13th Step has some great opening tracks and is overall far less derivative. But as an album, I feel like Mer De Noms is more cohesive/of a whole.

There are some acoustic, live (Philly 2001) performances of 3 Libras, The Hollow, and Sleeping Beauty that are simply gorgeous:

(^^Have to click/watch on Youtube, embeds turned off)

13th Step should have been the transition album but things went sideways afterwards.

@callas01 Oh and you mentioned Silversun Pickups!! One of my all-time favorites!

I saw them live at the famous Gilley's Ballroom in Dallas. They rock very hard. They closed the show with Panic Switch and it was epic.

I don’t want you to think I don’t really enjoy Mer De Noms, it’s a great album, and 3 Libras is one of my favorites from that album. I think 3 Libras is a shinning example of where they’re gonna take 13th step.

I missed Silversun in my own town, found out 2 days before the sold out venue!!

Agreed on all counts.

Also, well worth picking up a ticket or two next time they come around.

I saw Tool in 2007 at DTE in Detroit, awesome sounding concert.Maynard sang the entire concert from behind a screen, behind, and to the left of the drummer.Their first two albums are right up there with the best hard rock albums ever made. The next two are great, but go a lot deeper into the inner workings of Maynard’s brain, which is really cool, but not for everyone. If you have ever seen any of their videos, you realize this guy is out there...in a good way....but yeah, good call with Tool, long overdue for their next album.

I haven’t seen Tool live but I did see A Perfect Circle in Long Beach in 2004. That was a very good concert.
Goon Fighters, Boston and Capital Cities have probably been the best concerts I’ve been to.

I saw them at Lollapalooza in '92, they were on a side stage but still rocked! There were some awesome bands that played that show, Soundgarden, RATM, Pearl Jam, RHCP etc...

Maynard could have walked over to the RATM set to sing his studio verse during "Know Your Enemy" (I always forget Maynard sings the middle bridge verse on that track). That would have been awesome. Maynard with RATM on one stage, with Temple of the Dog (comprised of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) on the other!! Kinda like grunge potpourri.

EDIT: Smashing Pumpkins and STP (I'm not a hater, I quite like STP) were also there, wow. Too bad I was 10 years old in '92....

Haha I like STP now, however when I went to see Megadeth in hehe what do you know '92 (which was an AWESOME year for me not just because of all the awesome music I got to see live, I graduated HS, had an awesome job etc...), this unknown band opened for them and were pretty much booed off the stage by the crowd, that band was STP! They hit it big about 6 months later, however they definitely didn't belong opening up for a Thrash band...

Haha.... similar experience I was part of a crowd in Corona, CA back in 1994 at a punk show with Voodoo Glow Skulls and a couple other bands, and some ska band with a chick singer comes on and everyone was like “booooo you’re not punk get the $&@? off stage” and well a few months later I hear them on KROQ out here in CA singing the same ‘I’m just a girl’ song and my buddy and I were like isn’t that the band.....

Back to music I've really been enjoying the new Magpie Salute album. Great album. A few of songs you can just imagine Chris Robinson singing. Closest we'll get to a new Black Crowes album unfortunately.

I didn't really appreciate STP, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains until way later. That changeover period from hair bands to alt rock was metaphorical to my own life.

Cocaine to heroine is a big change. Lol. I'm with you but at the time it was time for a change. A lot of the hair bands were turning into boy bands almost. That said AIC and Soundgarden were my favorites of the time. Melvins too. They had more of the metal feel to them. Easier transition for me.

That said Singles soundtrack is a great album to relive the times

Agreed, much like '80's music I didn't grow to appreciate it until many years later, I mainly only liked a couple of the grunge bands when they first came out and tolerated the others out of necessity due to friends listening to them etc... In my core however it was still pretty much Thrash or nothing until I discovered Dream Theater in late '92 (haha imagine that) and they have been either my favorite or #2 band ever since...
