I completely agree that buying a pair is a better bargain, however some folks don't like the idea of buying a pair to only use one. They feel they're paying twice the price if they only need one. Buying a pair of Q100's is still more cost effective than a Q200/Q600c by far.

They sure sound GREAT sitting there. I never thought they'd be so good as "near field monitors" but the iQ10's piqued my curiosity to try them and glad I did.

The Kube 10b is shipping from Delaware sometime today or tomorrow. I should have it by this weekend, give it a good workout and report back.

There's a whole thread in the Classifieds Audio section for people wanting to go "halfsies" on a pair of these Q100s. I have a post there hoping to find someone. I'll give it one more day before I just go ahead and buy a pair myself then deal with the extra on my own. I'm too impatient with this stuff!

On a side note, my mild OCD will probably get to me with the KEF logo being rotated 90 degrees on a Q100 laid on its side as a center channel speaker. Anyone know if it's possible to remove the KEF badge from the speaker grille? Would be pretty cool to relocate the badge to an adjacent side so that it looks more legit as a center instead of a "tipped over" bookshelf. I'm guessing though that removing it would leave an unsightly mark on the grille cloth, at the very least.

To be honest, it isn't something I've ever considered, but I do have a Q200c so all my logos are right side up. I don't recall anyone reporting having tried it so I have no idea if it's doable. You can always keep it vertical or try to track down a Q200c, though haven't seen a sale on the Q200c in a while except in Canada.

Since it will already be mounted above my TV, I'd prefer to keep the driver as low as possible. I guess I could flip the speaker upside down so the driver is at the bottom and just flip the grille over so it looks normal. Still, the horizontal positioning would probably look better.

I'm in northern Vermont, so a Canada/Montreal sale (with a currently favorable exchange rate) is within two hours!

Hi

Looking for Atmos speaker options for current setup. I have a pair of KEF Reference Model 203/2 for my fronts, a KEF XQ50c for my center, a pair of in-ceiling Definitive Technology UIW BP/A for my surrounds and a JL Audio f113 sub.

I've had this setup for a number of years and have no plans to upgrade the LCR. I'm wanting to experiment with Atmos and was thinking of trying the R50 or Q50a speakers to see how they'd perform with my setup.

Has anyone had any success with these?

I subscribed to Spotify about a month ago. When I open up a web browser and play music it sound pretty good for most tracks. When I use my desktop app, the music sounds like there's a big drop in audio quality. In both cases I'm using the same computer on the same AVR and gear. Has anyone else noticed this? Am I losing my mind? am I missing something or doing something wrong?

initial impression, they have exceeded my expectations.

there isn't much more to add that hasn't been said/covered already. Both the Q100 and Q300 have a similar sound signature, except the Q300 have rolled highs (yet still detailed) and a little deeper extension. The Q100's seem to have a nicer/flater frequency response with slightly better high.

in my pc room 10x12 the Q100's have impressive bass(tighter than the Q300 is seems, but this could be a placement issue with my Q300) with some decent punch around 60-100hz, a nice big sound-stage and precise imaging. I could easily use them without a sub for music IMO (with the exception of hip hop etc) so i would recommend them for a small to small/medium size room without a sub.

DAC: i use the yamaha dac via Toslink(from pc)
amplification used is a Yamaha A-S501 integrated amplifier 85W RMS P/Ch. (0.019% THD)
Sub used : Bic H100-II (150W RMS) crossed over @ 60hz
NetGod and EPlay like this.

Those are some fine looking speakers! nice setup, mac!
I'd set the crossover a little higher with the 100's, but if personal preference is 60hz, that's perfectly fine.
The differences you described above is what made be go with the 100's over the 300's. They sounded better and were $100 cheaper.
Now all you need is a better sub.

for the size room (960 cu.ft.) the q100'sare being used they are perfect! I think they would work great in rooms up to 2500 cu.ft.
the Q300 are in a 2500 cu.ft. room that opens up to 5000 cu.ft., and i believe the extra displacement of the Q300's definitely help expand the sound-stage.

while i think i will end up preferring the Q100's "slightly", the Q300 work best for my living the room.
One thing i love with the Q300's is when listening at loud volumes i don't get ear fatigue. At the same time i don't plan on pushing the q100's hard in that tiny room lol.

overall i love them both.

next step is second Outlaw Ultra x-12 for the living room sometime this year.
eventually i'll get a replacement sub for the PC room , short list: HSU VTF1-MK3, Rythmik L12, SB1000, RSL Speedwoofer 10s (music is priority, but extension is also important for gaming) imo the output these subs can deliver is way overkill, but i want the extension lol

side observation: the 6 1/2" Uni-Q driver in my Q650C has a very similar sound signature of the Q100.
so for those who can't make up their mind between the Q100 vs Q300 , i have the answer..........---> Q350's lol

I was going to use 2 on their sides for my center channel; one above the TV, one below. Probably with the business end of each speaker on opposite sides.

Yeah. The 204/2C matches the 207/2 in the Reference series, and does a very respectable job matching my older 107/2s. You'd think there would be a Blade C. Perhaps they rely on the ability of the Blades to project a phantom center image. The 107/2s are very adept at that.

I suspect that they expect anyone who is truly serious about using these in a HT setup would probably have an AT screen and would simply use a matched vertical one as their center.

Thanks for the feedback on the R50's. What is your ceiling height? Mine is 12.5 feet which could be a little too much.

KEF Reference and Blade owners sit around in catotonic dumbfoundment at the sound coming out of their speakers, unable to break the spell long enough to post on this thread. One of the few that can is Mr.SoftDome, and we salute him.

That's tough to pull off. There would typically be serious peaks and nulls in the frequency response due to canellactions, and also serious phase issues unless they're exactly time-aligned.

I appreciate whenever @Mr.SoftDome can find time to drop in here and relate experiences with his Reference speakers. I believe @Theothergreg may have some too.

Not sure if anyone here has publically posted about having Blade or Blade II.

There's a KEF Owners' Group Facebook page and recently a member posted nice photos of his custom painted Blade 2's. Some jealous bonehead made some snide remark about "rich people" and the OP hasn't been heard from since. Jerk. If you can't own them for one reason or another, don't begrudge someone who can!

I completely agree. It's often tried, rarely works well. It takes patience, measurements and adaptable equipment.

My KEF Reference speakers are the mid-90s 107/2s and an early 2000 204/2C. Not sure if I'll eventually move to Blade 2s; I think about it, but I love the sound of the 107/2s and the 204/2C blends seamlessly with them. I do use LS50s for surrounds and for a stereo-only setup, so I'm not entirely anachronistic.

Hi Ken, I do, indeed still have my Reference 5s. Thanks for remembering. I compared vs the Blade II, but the Reference 5s worked better in my space. I enjoy everything about them: the fit, finish, and of course, the way a 4.5' 135 lb speaker can just disappear and present a holographic sound stage that puts you front and center. I really have no desire to change a single part of my system now and it's really nice to just sit down and listen to music. I posted this a while ago, but below is a slightly distorted cell phone picture with them in action.
