I'm looking for a powered subwoofer in the price range of $400-$500. Would like to hear from anyone who has bought one in that price range if they like it, where they got it, etc. Thanks in advance!

Try the MTX PS-15 for $470 delivered from Soundpros.com. It got a great write-up in Widescreen Review and IMO is the best sub $1000 powered sub.

I drove an hour to demo the MTX PS-15 and was extremely unimpressed. I would recommend the HSU TN825 (www.hsuresearch.com) or the ACI Quake (www.audioc.com).

Pioneer Elite SC-LX901 Receiver, Magnepan MG2.5/R x4 and CC3 center channel speakers with Sound Anchor stands, Power Sound Audio S3000i subwoofer, Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR-75X940E TV, Monoprice Premium HDMI and DH Labs Silver Sonic T-14 speaker cables

A Shiva or equivilent DIY sub will smoke most sub 1000 subs-

The bass output from my 2 DIY subs driven by 315 watts each @ 4 ohms, can't be matched by a pair of MK MX-125s, IMO. What does this tell you, since the drivers appear to be the same? It takes a helluva lot of power to generate powerful bass. Fact is, most commercial subs are underpowered.

It would probably take the equivilent of at least a pair of 18" velos to get the kind of output I get- Thats according to TV.

~125 for the driver, 100 for the sonotube enclosure, and 250 for a decent 2 channel amp, or mono amp (you only need 1 channel).

To WW98, take a look at Paradigm
PDR-10 and PDR-12.They come without
crossover so your processor can dump
de base straight in.Crossover is an option if you need it.The other
Paradigm sub that was recomended is
a bandpass sub and a good one,I used
to have the 8 inch/125 watt little
brother,PBM-800.I like the sound of
the PDR series better and PDR's are
much easier to set-up and adjust.PDR's
are front firing subs.

The Definitive Technology Pro Sub 100 at $450 list will kick the butt of any subwoofer in it's price range. Not only on movies, but has great tight, well-defined bass on music as well! Highly recommended! Give it a listen!

Enjoy!

DaveN,

The widescreen review article really had me excited about the MTX. But when I measured it at the store with my SPL it didn't have the extension I hoped for. Also, no matter what I seemed to do there were higher frequencies coming out of it and it was just too boomy for my tastes. However, if you are pleased with its performance bully for you. I have an ACI Titan which I am very happy with and few other people like so, se la vi.

Also, I just wanted to remark on the Acoustic Research subs. I had the 12HO (or whatever) in my house and what a piece of crap! Measuring the response with a SPL meter showed it had extension only down to about 45 Hz. Then nothing at all until you got down around 30 and then it was just buzzing and distortion. While it's possible I got a bad unit, it was nowhere near the specifications said it should be.

Pioneer Elite SC-LX901 Receiver, Magnepan MG2.5/R x4 and CC3 center channel speakers with Sound Anchor stands, Power Sound Audio S3000i subwoofer, Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR-75X940E TV, Monoprice Premium HDMI and DH Labs Silver Sonic T-14 speaker cables

avdoc,

I had to play around with the crossover frequency and room placement to get the sub sounding good. Unfortunately, subs are very dependant on room acoustics.
