Still waiting for Dave to post pricing on the upgrade kits. Using the S2 kit as a reference......that's $408/speaker, which includes the RAAL tweeter, new woofer(not the EX woofer), & crossover, I am HOPING that each EX kit will not top $300......$600/pr.

Hopefully Dave can keep it in that ballpark. Even better if he's below that!

$56 over my per-pair estimate, not too bad. Was really hoping my estimate was high.

So, if you take the price difference of the S1 to S2EX kit vs. the S2 to S2EX kit, the RAAL tweeter costs $170/ea.

This is going to take a bit of financial planning on my part to do the kits, but I've done both NrT & S2 upgrades already so why stop now!!

I’m contemplating selling my year old set of natural S2’s and go with a new pair of the EX’s. Very tempting, but I’m also curious if the step up is eye opening or more subtle. Hmmmmm.

I’m also wondering if some of these new woofers will make their way into the towers/horizon speakers.

Subwoofers: Dual Rythmik FV18
Speakers: L/R Ascend Acoustics Sierra 2 - Center - Horizon w/RAAL Surrounds: Sonance VP62R SST/SUR. Vinyl:Rega Planar 3

Only interested if the new custom SEAS Excel woofer becomes available for the Sierra Towers and Horizon as my S2s and Lunas do surround duties.

WELP I impulse bought the hell out of those (sierra 2 -EX) . Will be my first pair of speakers..was looking at the BMR's originally until they got axed...and these seem like a good value as far as I can tell. Think NAD Electronics C 368 should be fine to power them? Looking for some wireless capability on a budget.

Upgrade kits are available

But you have amazing subs so I doubt it would be worth it. I know Dave will say that even with an 80 Hz crossover you can tell the difference, but my point is with a sub setup like yours the difference will be very small compared to someone running without them.

I saw the price of the Sierra 2 to Sierra 2EX Upgrade Kit and most definitely not worthy in my case. If I was using the Sierra 2s in a 2 ch system or as a main front speakers, maybe.

Curious as to which cabinet and finish you bought. I'm partial to the Satin Dark Cherry.

I had my heart set on the original sierra-2s before happenning on one of Dennis’ last batch of BMRs. The 2EX sounds like it may be even closer or possible better than the BMRs. Would certainly love to hear them some day. Please be sure to share your thoughts after you listen to them.

P.S. i think the dark cherry might be second to the espresso for me. Both look good from the pics

Natural USA made cabinets for me too! It’s taking all my willpower not to just order a new set of EX’s. My cabinet is designed around them so I’m in for the long haul in this room. Trouble is the S2’s I have are just over a year old so pretty much new.

I'm glad I've been able to acquire things in my current setup... finances have really tighten up around here.

That is a sound plan (pun intended!)

I’d be interested in your thoughts of the differences between the S400’s vs S2’s & S2EX’s.

Yup, I'll post a comparison between the S400 and S2 after I get more hours on the S400. Then when I get the EX kit and put some hours on it, I'll post the S400 and S2-EX. I do have a couple of thoughts after listening to S400 for 8-10 hours.
  • Mads Buchardt is a really solid guy who genuinely seems to want to do right for his customers (same as Dave F.). He responds to all messages himself, though I doubt he'll be able to continue that if his company continues to grow as fast as it is.
  • I waited almost 4 months for the S400, though that was partly my fault. I ordered a black pair in early April for June delivery, and about halfway through the wait, I asked Mads if I could switch to the Smoked Oak. Mads let me switch to the Oak at the pre-order black price as long as I was willing to wait another 6 or so weeks. So I took him up on his offer and I'm glad I did...the Oak is a really nice finish and I'd highly recommend it.
  • While the S400 does have a nice finish, the cabinet does not seem quite as well built or damped as the S2 cabinet...though not many speakers I've encountered match the tankish build of the S2.
  • Buchardt claims a ridiculous break-in period, so I don't want to jump to conclusions one way or the other, but at least initially it does seem like the performance matches the hype. I've never heard a speaker its size sound so big. The bass is huge...and it's high quality - tight and fast. This is one of the few small speakers I've heard that you really don't need a subwoofer. And that was the main reason I bought it because I have them in a living space in my house and didn't want huge towers or a subwoofer, but still wanted something that could put out big sound.
  • Right now the S2 doesn't match the output of the S400, but it'll be interesting when the EX kit comes. While I've never heard them, supposedly the Seas W16 can put out ridiculous bass, so hoping for the same from Dave's version of those woofers.

I'm also awaiting my S400s. I took the discount in exchange for waiting for the next batch.

In the meantime I'm hearing several reports that they really like power. This has me worried whether my 110wpc NAD would be enough.

I think that both of the speakers in question here are going to want some power. What are you driving them with?

In the meantime I'm hearing several reports that they really like power. This has me worried whether my 110wpc NAD would be enough.

I think that both of the speakers in question here are going to want some power. What are you driving them with?
I’m using an older Parasound amp, the HCA-1500A, that puts out 315 watts into 4 ohms. I also have a Rotel amp that only puts out 60-80 watts that I can try and let you know how it sounds. I think the NAD should be fine though.

It would be great if you could tell us whether going from the lower power amp to the higher power amp makes a noticeable difference. Make sure you level match, though. Have an SPL meter?

HT: Samsung PN64H5000 (recommended settings) | NAD T758 V3 | Buchardt S400 (2) | Emotiva E2 (2) | Rythmik Audio F12 (2)

I remembered I have an Emotiva A-800 that puts out 80 watts into 4ohms. I thought that would be closer in output to your NAD, so I hooked it up this morning and listened for about an hour. I had both amps set to where they averaged about 80db. Honestly, I couldn’t tell a difference. The bass and dynamics the S400 has with the Parasound seemed to all be there with the Emotiva.

I think your NAD should be fine, but if you’re concerned you can pick up used high powered amps for not much money from good brands like Adcom, Parasound, ATI, B&K, etc., for not much money. I think I paid about $450 my Parasound in pristine condition. Not bad for a John Curl designed amp.

Thanks for the quick listen. I have the Crown XLS series in mind just in case it's needed. I hope I don't need the extra expense - quite a few reviewers of these speakers have said it made a big difference for them, which is what got me curious. One person, ok - maybe they didn't level match. But 3-4 similar accounts had me thinking maybe there is something to it.
