Nope - dealer in Chicago. I got my center, rears, processor from Magnolia in Burbank. But the 11A I got from him. Feel bad for the buyer, but not my fault -it was all perfect here, including the packing and care. Hope he gets it resolved swiftly and cheaply

He hooked up the speakers with a live amp. Lucky that’s all the damage he did!
I really think that's what happened - the amp was running and he connected it. Honest, simple mistake. He was probably in a rush to get them going...he was so blown away after doing the demo and had a long drive home. Not sure what else it could be after speaking w/ my dealer....honestly, there's not really another optin unless the panel got dislodged - which is an easy fix. 4 screws to remove and then you can diagnose.

Yes, he blew the voltage board. The deal, however is telling him that it wasnt due to a malfunction of the speaker, so he's not sure if ML will send a replacement part. So, I thought I was w/ it...but I guess I am not. I really don't need continue helping, but I feel bad for him. And maybe good karma to help him get it sorted! LOL I think his amplifier has an issue. At one point he said the other working speaker starting hissing as well....but is now perfect. So I think there's a connect/signal/amp issue on his end. I mean, he did a 90 minute demo and they sounded better than I remember

The ones that I had the longest, the early CLSs, did lose part of a panel, but that was after 20 years and that side was in the morning sun at certain times of the year. We now know that's a no - no

Yeah, I mean I should be done w/ the issue...I put him and the dealer in touch, they spoke and diagnosed it. The buyer is just contacting me asking for some help and I feel bad because I was told it wouldn't be an issue. Oh well, hopefully the cost of a voltage board isn't too high - especially considering the deal he got from me!

I'm just glad it wasn't me. Things not working drive me nuts (short drive) and with shipping across the country …. I'm just too busy doing deals right now to have dealt with it.

I sold my CLSs to Doctor in Florida and sure enough UPS managed to break the oak frame which I think would be pretty hard to do. UPS insurance eventually covered it, but it all turned to be major hassle.

I’m getting ready to sell some speakers and preamp and this is something that has me worried. I feel like the people buying higher end equipment are more understanding and patient to get what they want. My Electro Motions are the base model and I’m worried someone would flip their lid.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out an upgrade for my current surround speakers that is both a sonic improvement and takes up less space (tall order, I know).

Currently running Motion 40s and 30 in the front, and Polk Rti A1s on the sides, plus FX A4 in the rear. I was originally mulling the Motion 15, but they're a bit bigger than I'd like, and obviously twice the price.

Would the Motion 4i be a solid improvement over the Polk Rti A1? I'll probably go with the Motion FX for the rears.

This is a reason, maybe the main reason, I just let stuff accumulate around here and never sell anything. I don't want to do craigslist because there's probably a bunch of critters that I don't want in my house, and few peeps are going to buy without hearing. So here it just piles up.

I am using 4 Motion 4i on thin stands as my rear and side surrounds, at about 6 feet away from the main listening position. I have been happy with the experience so far. Those ML tweeters at approximately ear level give a great sense of presence and atmosphere.

Sorry I can’t answer your question about comparing to the Polks.

Still helpful to hear from someone who’s using them for surrounds. Thanks!

Out of curiosity what were you pairing them with for fronts?

Can anyone tell me if the difference between the motion 4 vs 4i is all that significant? I’m reading stuff that says it’s mostly cosmetic, but from the pictures online they look exactly the same to me. Do they sound the same? Asking because there’s still deals on the motion 4 (no i).

Pretty much cosmetic only.

I specifically asked at Cedia! The only physical change is some speakers ( Motion 40 and 60 - not sure on others ) had the metal grill changed to cloth.

I'm getting some Motion FX2's in soon. They seem to be the only speakers in the current 2019 refresh that is more than a cosmetic difference over the previous FX. I'm using the Motion 4/4is as my atmos speakers, and though they sound great, and immersive, they were not a huge jump over the Def Tech Pro Monitor 1000s I used before. Possibly some better blending and cohesion, but not a night/day difference. I'm currently using the Def Tech SR9080 for the S/R surrounds now with very good results. I'm anticipating a marginal improvement like I did getting the Motion 4s. So I do recommend you look into the Pro Monitor 1000 series by Def Tech. They're relatively cheap, easily wall mountable, and are more flexible to aim with its OEM ball-joint structure. I can post my impressions of the FX2s once I get them in.

The FX2 have been out for at least a few years. I got mine in 2017. Don’t think they’re a refresh of the FX for this year.

I appreciate the info. I'm a little confused though, don't the Motion 4s include an aimable mount? I'm planning on mounting them forward of my sofa on either side, and pivoting them in. Is that not possible with the stock mounts?

Thanks for the clarification. Do you have any experiences with the OG FX line? Why did they release the fx2s? How do you like them?

Did a bit of looking around and it looks like the FX2 are older than I thought. This post on Martin Logan Owners has them in 2012. I’ve not heard the original FX

http://www.martinloganowners.com/for...-FX2-surrounds

Also from that post it looks like the differences are that the FX2 s just flat out bigger. Bigger cones, 2 cones instead of 1, and bigger folded tweeters. The FX is 12x11 inches and 9 pounds and the FX2 is 15x14 inches and 16 pounds.

Yeah, that's a huge difference, and more likely what I would want to keep if I had to choose between the two. I think they were released to complement their Electrostat lines, more so than the Motion line. Are you blending them with the Motion lineup? What's the rest of your setup look like? Thanks for the quick replies.

When I bought them I got them with the base level Electro Motion ESLs for fronts, Motion 50XT for center, Micca 8in for Atmos, a couple 12in Klipch subs, and the FX2 for surrounds. I’ve since changed out the fronts, center, and subs for Martin Logan Renaissance 15a fronts, Illusion C34a center, and 2 Rel 212se for subs.

The FX2 have blended in very well in both setups. Martin Logan timber matches the tweeters across their entire line including their electro statics.

The Motion 4 stock mounts allow a max downward angle of 20 degrees. But you won't be able to point them inwards, towards the MLP. I'm actually using the stock Def Tech wall mount, which has the same thread size as the Motion 4s, and have them mounted inversely, with the tweeters at the bottom, and the driver at the top. The ball joint mount allowed me to point them inward, and a little above the MLP, which gave me the best atmos effect. Sometimes even a small degree of toe-in and positioning makes a big difference, so that's why the Def Techs worked really well for me. It provides a full sound, but in a relatively light and small speaker. They are much deeper than the Motions, but the ML's are taller.

The FX2 have blended in very well in both setups. Martin Logan timber matches the tweeters across their entire line including their electro statics.

Awesome system. Thank you for sharing. It's good to know the FX2s held up, especially with your heavy hitting LCRs. It looks like you have monoblocks for every speaker as well. Very impressive stuff. Though the TV is now looking rather puny next to the gargantuan speaker setup!

FX2 have done great and have kept up with everything else in the setup.

Ha! Ya, the little 65 does look tiny. The monoblocks are for the fronts and center. Surrounds are powered by a Yamaha MX-A5000. We’re building a dedicated theater and I’ll be going from 5.2.2 to 7.4.6 so all those extra channels on the Yamaha amp will come in handy.

Do you have a link to your full set up listing? You should consider putting it in your signature. I'm always curious in others' personal setups and choices. Are you using a 16ch Pre-pro or plan to get one later?

I’ve got a Marantz 8805 as a prepro and a Matrix X-Sabre Pro for 2 channel.

Good idea on the signature. Might have to look into doing that.

Out of curiosity what were you pairing them with for fronts?

B&W 703 L/R
B&W HTM71 S2 Center
