You are going to love how those speakers look. Mine are similar (curly cherry with black dye and black edges that fade into the veneer). I recently ordered some more Salks (8 just isn't enough) and when I was doing some research, I did a google image search for "salk ss8". There was a picture of a bunch of Salks finished like mine and I thought, "Wow! Nice speakers!". It took me a minute to realize that the picture was actually of my speakers in my old house. It's hard (impossible?) to beat the fit and finish of Salks.

All around it sounds like the domes are awesome!
I went with the dome tweeter as the ribbon option for three speakers (LCR) was a bit over my budget at the time. I've heard the ribbon on STs and Veracity STs. A very nice sounding tweeter without a doubt. But I have no regrets about the choice of the dome tweeter.

Once you place your order have a doctor place you into a shallow coma for a few weeks. Waiting for the build and delivery is excruciating.

That may be! I was fortunate enough to find that pair that do come up for sale on rare occasion.

Yes, if you're not particular about your finish--which, given these are Salks, means you're crazy--there are some great deals to be had on second hand Salks.

So true in that there are very good deals to be had on Salk speakers on the used market. I was very fortunate recently to find a mint pair of Salk 1801-TLs for $1145 shipped to my door. The finish is standard curly cherry which is lighter than my preference but that's fine considering the savings on these outstanding sounding speakers . The added bonus was the seller was a real nice guy and he packed each speaker as if they came direct from Salk.

I found these pics of Songtowers on the Salk website, with the Raal Ribbon Tweeter upgrade it said they were Songtower RT, but they look different . Are they both ribbon tweeters? What's the difference?

The first picture is an early ribbon tweeter model that featured LCY ribbon tweeters (if I recall correctly). The later (and current) models use the RAAL tweeter.

Ok, I actually just googled Raal ribbon tweeter, and came across a picture of the LCY tweeter and it matched. Cool , thanks for clearing that up, it was driving me nuts. lol

The LCY tweeter is a Chinese made ribbon that is very good. It had been used in a number of Salk speakers.

When the SoundScape speakers were first developed, it used the excellent and somewhat more expensive Raal tweeter which were newly available. If I remember correctly, around the same time that Jim Salk developed a steady supply arrangement with Raal, LCY had some quality control problems that resulted in a limited supply of their tweeters for some time. So Salk switched over to Raal ribbons instead of any other because of the better sound quality and greater availability.

None of the Salk speakers made with LCY tweeters have any problem. If you like their finish, those used speakers can be great deal.

The "Supercharged" SongTowers use the Raal tweeter. The standard SongTowers use the dome tweeter. I'm sure Jim would build a SongTower using the stadard drivers but with a Raal tweeter as well if you wanted.

Perhaps I'm misreading your post, but it sounds like you think a RAAL combined with the standard woofers would be a new design. That's actually been available for several years, and pre-dates the SC ST.

Sorry Dennis. That's not what I meant. I was just adding further detail to my last post, indicating that the standard SongTower features a dome, the Supercharged has the RAAL and there is also the option of upgrading only the tweeter (like the picture in post 9435).

Good to see you're still keeping an eye on us Salk fans. Hope all is well with your family.

And in an effort to keep you engaged, is there any chance of you adding a photo of a SongTower with a RAAL tweeter to the first post? I'm guessing the LCY tweeter holds a special place for you , but I think a photo with the RAAL tweeter would give new prospective customers a more accurate idea of what a current ribbon upgrade would look like. Anyway, just a thought.

Thank you, I appreciate that.

Good catch on the lack of RAAL pictures. When I created the thread they weren't offered yet, but I fixed that just for you. The first picture is now a pair of front ported SongTower's with the RAAL ribbon tweeter.

On Friday (Halloween), Pete and Brenda showed up with cases Pete had built for the tops, bottoms and outriggers - each appropriately sized and labeled.

Thanks for the kudos Jim. Great job by the team! The speakers are being fed the best I can do right now and are amazing.

I would really like to attend the Axpona Show! Chicago is just a short ways down 94.
This Show might be my best opportunity to hear Salk speakers for the first time.
