I was looking to buy a soundbar for my tiny NYC apartment living room (12x11). My friends (I respect them as audiophiles) talked me out it. They suggested that I get a decent receiver and go for some bookshelf speakers and maybe add in a sub later on.

The basic gist it I am going for a receiver and good bookshelf speakers around the 500 dollar range. After reading through this forum I want to get the DENON AVR-1613 or the Yamaha RX-V473. I don't mind getting it from accessories4less as more people on this forum recommend it. I might pull the trigger on either one of those.

However, Bestbuy has a sale on the this onkyo HT-R2295 for 150. Should I get this. Or is it an overkill for my 2.1 setup. I may never be able to setup 7.1 in my place or even in the near future.

This is what I need

1. Should I buy DENON AVR-1613(210$- refurb)  or the Yamaha RX-V473($279-refurb) or the Onkyo HT-R2295 (150 -  brand new).

2. I need some good book-shelf speaker suggestions around the 150 - 200 $ range. I did see some Polk for 150 on newegg.

3. What about sub-woofers? Should I get them.

thanks for your suggestions.

Get the Denon 1613 refurb plus the below listed 5.1 setup from Monoprice ... with total cost for both being under your $500 budget. smile.gif

Thanks for the respose 'jdscience'. I am leaning towards the Yamaha (4k pass through). I will get the get one the newer consoles within the next year.  My TV is not 4K, but i wanted to futureproof my purchase.

Unless you plan on purchasing an 85" or larger TV or PJ screen, than the difference between 4K and 1080p will be moot. To keep to your budget, better served just getting one of last year's models on clearance. Also note, that the current year's 4K models are not true 4K as will the new 2014 models be which will offer HDMI 2.0.

Thanks for clearing it up. I bought the Denon AVR-1613 from accessories4less (refurb @ $226 shipped). Don't really need a 5.1 setup. Just need a bookshelf and a sub to begin with. Any ideas.

Cambridge S30 bookshelf speakers, $180 shipped
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/CAMBS30BLK/CAMBRIDGE-AUDIO-S30-4-2-way-Bookshelf-Speakers-Pair-Black/1.html

Leaves you about $100 for your subwoofer. Either go with this Dayton 10" sub for $110 shipped or wait until you have another $100 to get a better sub.

Not a lot of good sub options for $100. This is one of the better choices.

Thanks for all the help.I was wondering why there were no responses yesterday. I am going to wait out for the sub for now. If I were to get a center channel speakers. Should I go with the S50 center speakers(http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/CAMBS50OAK/CAMBRIDGE-AUDIO-S50-4-3-Way-Center-Channel-Speaker-Dark-Oak/1.html $180 shipped). The tax returns will be on their way next month so I might have a budget to buy the center speakers and the Bic F12.

Got the Cambridge S30 and the refurb Denon AVR-1613 yesterday. Setup everything, no sound. The problem is with the receiver. The speakers work good. Tried them at a friends place. The audssey and the speaker calibration have been greyed out. Talked to Denon customer service. They were not very helpful but mostly rude. Makes me rethink if I want to get another refurbished unit or even a Denon. I am trying to get my money back from acessories4less. They take 24 hours to start the refund process.

Makes me wonder do i really want to get another Denon or get something else from a best buy. Thoughts?

Bought the Yamaha RX-V375 from bestbuy. They were on sale for 220$. Like it so far. I do have an Apple TV, so the networking functionality on the other models are moot for me.
