I have the chance of buying the 840 for $315 or the 1040 for $420. I have Pioneer SP-FS52 LR, SP-BS22 rears and SP-C22 center. I will be adding 2 more SP-BS22's later. I am slowly building my setup as I see prices of what I want drop. Dual subs are on the list after receiver. Possibly SVS or Reaction Audio? My living room is open to side room, kitchen and hallway. Total area is 4530 sq cu ft. Which of the 2 receivers are a better buy for my setup? Thank you for any suggestions!

I'm not sure about the 840, but I know the 1040 has had a lot of reliability issues with the HDMI connections. I generally like sony as a brand, so this is not Sony bashing, just pure hearsay observation from this forum and others.

I think the Sony HDMI problems are fixed in a software update

Love my 1040, no issues, love the freaking on screen. Have it up just to have it up. Amazing sound! I looked at the room correction differences and the 1040 has the same as the double cost ES next up the line. Id really like the top dog 5700 or 5800 just for the room correction itself but the performance to dollar makes the 1040 the spankin winner!

Still haven't pulled the trigger on one of these. Also creeping into the pictures is the Denon X2000 for 399. Any thoughts on one of the 3?

I'd rather have the Denon as I'm more familiar with the way they operate and like the Audyssey room calibration. It comes with a 3 year warranty too!

I have an 840 and a 1040. I like them both better than my Onkyo TX-NR818. Mainly because I am setting up a lossless Airplay music network, which the Onkyo requires an adapter.

The 1040 simply has a nicer GUI. But all the capabilities of the 1040 are in the 840. I just setup my 840 over the weekend, and it connected to my wireless network 1st try. Not the case with the 1040 where I had to manually "type" in the SSID.

My two cents any way. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Marty. I ended up getting the 1040. It was on sale for $420.00. So far I am happy with it. Still haven't learned much about it. This is my first avr in over 20 years. Any tips, tricks I may want to know about?
