Thanks for the clarification!

So that means it can do pass through of a 4K remux rip with no protection but not 4K content with HDCP 2.2. Though that would still leave us with no HDR whatsoever.

One could send the 4k HDR signal directly to the TV and then use HDMI ARC to sent the audio from the TV to the AVR. If there is a TV that can send HD surround audio through ARC, that is. My old Panny can only send stereo..

Just as is true with ARC, in order to support eARC (ie. HD Audio) both the TV and the AVR must support eARC, which on the Denon AVRs would only apply to the 2017 and newer models.

Thanks for the very informative reply.

Oh man. I don't want to think what the upgrade to HDR 4K is going to cost me if I need a TV and an AVR. The only thing for sure is that I'm not in a hurry.

..............................all across the tv screen when I put my Denon AVR X2100W

When I put the Denon in the loop I have a distorted screen with nothing but dots in the back round of whatever is playing. As soon as I turn it off, the TV works fine on its own. It has been hooked up the same way with no problems for 2 years and this happened all of the sudden. Need some help...

One option is to use an hdcp converter. Converts the 4k signal down to hdcp 1.4. Then your receiver will process the video and audio.

Depending on the capabilities you need, they are as cheap as 20 bucks. The highest price being the hdfury integral.

Ensure you have the INPUT MODE setting for the GAME source set to "Analog" and not "Auto" as well as deleting the HDMI input in the INPUT ASSIGN setting.

I have the S900W which does not support HDCP 2.2 Incoming I have an LG 60UJ770 4K TV and Fire TV 4K 2nd gen. It's clear that I can't hook up the Fire TV to the S900W directly as they won't be able to handshake 4K HDCP content. I'm thinking to connect the Fire TV directly to the TV and then HDMI ARC to the S900W for the audio. But what is the best I can hope for audio in this case? Will DD5.1 work? Not even sure what the typical audio format is for content from Amazon or Netflix. Do they stream any of the HD audio formats?

The only reason in the past that I liked to run all video via the AVR was to get the AVR GUI overlay, but I understand with 4K video that doesn't work anyway unless you go up to the more expensive AVR.

I hope I don't have to upgrade to the 2017 AVR lineup just to get a decent setup working.

1. What can be expected will depend on your TV so refer to your TV's Owner's manual. Netflix will pass either DD 5.1 or DD+(Atmos) audio, although the S900W is not Dolby Atmos capable so just the DD+ audio track would play. Currently no HD audio formats are streamed as no TV can pass them. The newer and mid/higher level 2017 models (X3400H/X4400H/X6400H) will receive the eARC firmware update at a later date which will allow them to receive HD audio formats passed by the TV; however, the TV must also receive the eARC update as well in order to pass HD audio formats.

One alternative solution (available in October) is the HD Fury AVR Key 18gbps ---> https://www.hdfury.com/product/avr-key/

2. Currently no Denon or Marantz model (to include 2017 models) can overlay the GUI on 4k video.

Thank you. What a mess. No wonder people just set up simple (wireless) sound bars and call it good enough if it just makes some noise.

I have not been able to get update notes in a timely manner of late. Although updating should not reset anything or change any settings, some have noted a network connectivity issue after doing the update so best to hold off on doing this one for a while.

The "compare" feature of the Denon website seems to claim that models AVR-S930H and higher support 4K scaling and GUI overlay. Is that an error on the website?

No "transparent" overlay (as is the case with 1080p video) rather only an overlay on a black background which for the GUI takes up most of the display.

I'm considering upgrading to the X2300W or X2400H from my X2100W to get full 4K content protection funtionality. There is obviously a large price increase for the newer model, but I seem to remember that the X2400W actually as some functionality missing versus the X2300W which makes the X2300W even more attractive. Can anyone help me remember what this is and any other real improvements/regrets in the newer model? TIA

The X2400H no longer does analog --> HDMI conversion but uses an upgraded 32bit DAC, includes a HEOS module, has Dolby Vision on board (rather than receiving it by firmware update early 2018 like the X2300W), and will receive the new eARC capability via a firmware update which will allow an eARC capable TV to pass HD audio back to the AVR.

Refer to my post 1 in the 2017 Denon AVR Owner's thread for more feature information.

Thanks JD, I now recall the conversion functionality change, which is not a good thing as I have a 400 DVD jukebox that is component only, and the feed to the TV is via HDMI. The DV and eARC are not important to me either.

Thanks again.

P.S. After checking I realized I have component cables from the AV closet to the TV so the new model's missing analog to digital conversion is not a problem.

I have just ordered an LG 65C7 but am a bit unsure whether my X2100W will support the tv. I only use the HDMI ports for pass-through, but will I get full HDR/4K support or not? Would be a very annoying thing needing to replace the receiver too, since that would add a lot to my cost :/ Anyone can help me on this pls.

Not. Only the 2015 and newer models can pass 4k/HDR. However, you can purchase a dual HDMI 4k Blu Ray player and use one HDMI to pass the 4k/HDR video to the TV and the other HDMI to pass the HD audio to the X2100W.

Or one of these:

I haven't tried them myself, just read about them. YMMV.

X2100 Not Showing Now Playing in Bluetooth Mode / WIFI Stopped Working

When I connect a device to my Denon X2100 such as my Pixel to play music over bluetooth, the audio works but I don't have the GUI where I can see what's playing. In addition, my receiver can no longer connect to WIFI, and when I scan for networks it can't find any but I live in an apartment building where it used to see many networks. I tried unplugging it for 30 minutes to do a hard reset but that didn't help. Any suggestions on how to fix either problem would be greatly appreciated.

There is a lot of very helpful information provided in the first 7 posts of this thread to include the various reset procedures listed in post 5.

When the issue presents on only one source, generally it's always a setting on the source causing the problem.
