Thanks in advance
If you want DTS:X, go for the 646 (or 747).

I'm thinking of buying one of these TX-NR 838 so I can use the Dolby Atmos but by the look at it its a no go for DTS X on this model. Can someone please explain what Happens in the future if I purchase a blu ray movie in DTS X and stick it into my Oppo 103D where the audio is outputted to a NR 838. What will this DTS X movie be outputted in "eg" DTS Master Audio or other.

thanks for your answer.
After doing a lot more reading I think the TX RZ 800 could be more suited for me and should be in the shops soon ( I hope)

With the 646 you have the Centre Channel, the Front Left and right channel, The surrounds left and right, The rear Backs or surrounds can be selected as height speakers (new ceiling speakers) in your ceiling but if wired this way the Rear Surrounds will be disconnected and never used.
I was looking at the TX RZ 800 as it allows you to connect the Height speakers and rear surround separately but naturally cannot be used altogether as the RZ 800 is still a 7.2 AMP.

Below is a Pic of the RZ 800

I'm also considering the 838. Sorry, I don't understand this answer. Can you explain what up mix thru DSU means?

I've narrowed my purchase options down to the 747 or 838, but have a couple of questions to resolve.

Earlier in this thread it was mentioned that the 838 does not have HDMI 2.0 and if I wanted it, I should wait for a 2015 model. However, I now see the 838 has HDMI 2.0 according to Onkyo's website. Am I missing something?

I see the 747 has DTS-X, but the 838 does not. The 747 also has Wifi and Bluetooth, 838 does not.

I can get a 747 for $750 or an 838 for $600. On Onkyo's website the 838 is the higher-priced unit. That confuses me.

Would I be giving up any specs/features if I went with the 747?

838 had one hdmi input that is hdcp 2.2 whereas 747 has three. Also no dts x on 838. I would go with 747 as its a newer model

The 838 has HDMI 2.0 not the slightly newer HDMI 2.0a that are on the 2015 models. 2.0a adds HDR(High Dynamic Range) to HDMI 2.0 and will also have 1 HDCP 2.2 input via #3 , so if your like me and only want 4K for UHD-BD you'd be good to go. If you want your cable/sat box, gaming systems and BD player all 4K you'd better get the 747. You can also use Dolby Surround Upmixer in place of DTS X tracks on the 838. It will do a wonderful job of using the overheads. The 838 should have Wifi & Bluetooth as my 1030 has both. I also don't know why some of these manufacturers choose to only provide limited number of inputs at HDCP 2.2? Onkyo had the good sense to at least add it in their 2014 models but why just 1, it should have been all. Same with the new models this year. All low/high end models should have all inputs HDCP 2.2.

Can a member please give my some input of the advantages of the RZ 800 over the NR 646 when it comes to the Extra Speaker connections on the RZ 800 over the NR 646. If I'm correct if I buy the NR 646 my rear surround will have to be disconnected/removed to make way for the two Height ceiling speakers.

My 636 does have "Height" capability, but with nothing hooked up to its ports, it plays TrueHD and DTS-HD beautifully.

Your selection should be based on your feature requirements:

737 - adds Zone 3 pre-outs but only has HDCP 2.2 on 1 input
646 - adds DTS:X update and has HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0a on 3 inputs

Seems like the Onkyo's are priced really well.

I am looking for something with hdcp 2.2. Atmos 7.2.4 and preouts for all, except for ceiling speakers. Using B&K amps through the preouts, so power isnt an issue.

What will $1200 get me on amazon? Should i spend more?

Just so you know, Spotify Connect != the Spotify app you would use on your phone or desktop PC. It's far worse!

Hi all, I'm new here, and I was just looking to get some opinions. I picked up a 636 back in mid-July for $350 as part of the Amazon Prime Day specials. I am doing a 5.1.2 Atmos setup, and as such I am second-guessing my 636 purchase. It was for a good price, so I am having difficulty justifying going through the trouble of trying to sell it and get the 646, especially with the fact that I would like to put that extra money into speakers. I plan on upgrading AVR's in a couple years, most likely 3-4 years, so how much am I missing out on between now and then with not having DTS: X capability? Is adding DTS: X and an additional 2 HDCP 2.2 HDMI inputs really going to be that much of a deal-maker? So far, I am loving the 636, it is perfect for my 12X15 basement setup...I just can't help but wonder "what if" on the DTS: X. The extra HDCP 2.2 inputs are less of a concern for me at this point. Thanks!

Just a quick note to those who have these receivers....I recently purchased a 70" Vizio 4k M-Series after reading very positive reviews especially for the price, and while any 1080p or greater content looked great, I was really struggling with my Fios picture quality. The secret turned out to be using the 4k upscaling of the receiver and not the TV. The Qdeo chips really do a fantastic job, its worth a shot if you have a 4k display and haven't yet tried the AVR upscaling.

I have a 1030 and the upscaling is simply fantastic. My set is high end 1080P and its so clear and the detail is so fine that I can't imagine it getting any better. I also highly recommend the Onkyo units for upscaling.

I tried this and it works great. My cable looks better now.

Does anyone know how to output two different video sources to Main and Sub?

Same as above, but change main to M + S

Edit: But I'm not sure if you can output 2 "different" sources, never tried. ..

Yeah I can get the source to display on both. But I read somewhere, I thought it was in here, that I can output two different sources to main and sub. I want to play PS4 and my son wants to play Xbox One. Maybe its not possible. Thanks.

Using Zone 2 without turning on Zone 1

I have a 535 and am using Zone 2 to feed audio from the NET source (Pandora and Sirius) to another receiver that is hooked to my outdoor speakers.

I'd like to be able to program my Harmony remote with a "Pandora Outside" function that will turn on only Zone 2 on the Onkyo 535, set it to Net, Pandora, and then my channel WITHOUT powering up Zone 1.

During my attempts to do so, I was able to only turn on Zone 2 by hitting the Zone2 button on the original 535 remote, and then the NET button.

The display on the front of the 535 changed to indicate Zone 2 was on, but was dark on the rest on the display. I was unable to figure out how to change to the Pandora selection and am unsure if Zone 2 can work without Zone 1 being powered on.

I am able to get Zone 2 to work with Pandora going to the outdoor speakers , but only with Zone 1 on, too.

Can Zone 2 supply the NET input to my outdoor speakers without Zone 1 being powered on?

If it is possible to use Zone 2 without using Zone 1 at the same time, how would I be able to get the Pandora ( or Sirius) selection without having a display to see where I am in the menu ?

I am open to suggestions on other methods to achieve my goal of listening to music outside without powering up Zone 1.

Thanks for correcting, CalJake. Looking back on the Onkyo website now I'm not sure where I got that either. Sorry for the confusion.

Onkyo TX-NR838

Finally got my 838 back from repair....with the two left feet (front and back) broken off. Likewise, a big scratch and dent in the front bottom left corner. Ugggg. Not a happy camper. It took over 3 1/2 months to get it back from repair to begin with.
