i bought and paid for my XMC around nov of 17. my email doesnt have an option for the self install but i was going to send it in anyway until i read some of the replies in this thread and the one going on over at emotiva lounge. my email says in about 25 days and that makes sense that some of you are getting emails saying 10 days. you did get your units first after all. i was leaning toward sending it in until 2 good points were made about the self install option, first was the chance of ups package attack. i dont want my box bounced around twice on the trip up and back from tenn. i have never had a package damaged so that the contents were damaged, so am i up for one now?....ummm

and the second good point was made by enricoclaudio that if we do are own installation, we do have that original board to keep. but as i type this i question, why? why would i want it? if the new board goes bad im not putting the older one back in so it would just be another piece of computer hardware in a box which have more than enough now.

no i think im sending my unit back and i will insure it to the tune of $5000. if something happens to it, i will get 2 as a replacement.

hope the process goes smoothly for everyone involved.

Jeff
I own the Oppo 205 also, and if it is set to output DSD over HDMI it will send DSD. If the Oppo is set to send out SACD as PCM over HDMI, the Oppo will internally decode the DSD and send as PCM.
I have tested it both ways, in fact right now I'm playing Pink Floyd DSOTM 5.1. When the Oppo' 'SACD OUTPUT' is set to DSD the XMC-1 shows it is receiving DSD 5.1 2.8224Mhz 1 Bit.
When the Oppo is set to PCM the XMC-1 shows it is receiving 5.1 88.2kHz 24 Bit.

The XMC-1 is limited to no DSP of any kind when sent DSD. Pure audio only. If set to PCM you can use Dirac if you so wish.

Hope that's what you were asking.

Tom

I was going to send it in until I read the Step #2 regarding packaging and shipping. I know you need to protect your back in case of damage and also know how difficult is to win a damage claim to UPS but this sentence in that email made it more clear to me: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY OCCUR IN-APPROVED PACKAGING. THERE WILL BE SERVICE CHARGES AND FEES ASSOCIATED WITH REPAIRS UNDER THIS CIRCUMSTANCE.

That struck me the same way. I don't see an advantage in doing the self-install in order to keep the old module. I do see an advantage of self-install to cut down on the time my unit would be out of service.

But then I am not doing the upgrade anytime soon.

Just so I'm clear on this . . . the v3 board you're all about to get is the board that allows for HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. This board does not enable Atmos, correct? Although it was supposed to follow "soon" after the v3 board IIRC.

Thanks, Tom. I am still limping by with the Oppo 83 so my query is more with regard to attaching a JRiver client to the XMC-1 and streaming DSD to it over HDMI. I think my research has found the answer is "no", the XMC-1 will only accept streamed DSD from an optical player.

My outstanding question is "How does it know it's from an optical player and is there a way to trick it?"

That’s correct. This is the HDMI “v3” board which brings HDMI 2.0b/HDCP 2.2 (along with HDR-10 and Dynamic HDR) across all inputs and outputs. The audio board upgrade which brings Atmos and DTS-X will come soon after the release of the RMC-1.

BTW, Dynamic HDR includes Dolby Vision. Emotiva already got the DV certification and paid for the license to Dolby Labs.

Where are you getting this info or idea?

I don't think that is correct. The release of the XMC-1v3 and XMR-1 should come soon after the RMC-1. I don't believe work on the v2 upgrade will even begin until these products release.

I would love to be wrong but I believe it is wise for us all to have realistic expectations. I wouldn't even be surprised if they scrapped the upgrade and offered a trade-in program. The new products are built on an entirely new platform not shared with the XMC-1v2.

In fact, the XMC-1 Gen 2 will be back in stock in about 2 weeks and will be sold with the V3 HDMI board already installed.

I think they are confusing the XMC-1v3 with the v2 board. I'll find out soon.

You might want to ask at either the Oppo UDP-203/205 threads. They both have an HDMI input. Because of Sony's OCD restrictions on SACD and DSD it is possible that the HDMI's inputs don't accept DSD. Someone there will be able to tell you if it's possible. Or if there is a trick of some kind.
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-bl...-s-thread.html
Good luck.

Edit- this is from the 205 manual:
Input
HDMI Audio: up to 7.1ch/192kHz PCM, up to 5.1ch DSD, Bitstream. HDMI Video: UHD/1080p24/1080p/1080i/720p/576p/576i/480p/480i, 3D frame-packing 1080p24/720p. USB Audio: up to 2ch/768kHz PCM, up to 2ch/2.8224MHz/5.6448MHz/11.2896MHz DSD. Coaxial/Optical Audio: up to 2ch/192kHz PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, AAC

I see you’ve already gotten your answer, but this was really no secret. It’s been discussed on the Emotiva Lounge (and in previous podcasts) for many months, but is nice to hear the words “right after” the release of the RMC-1.

Is there a picture of the prototype board?

If the XMR-1 is released anytime soon I will sell the NAD.

I’ve seen “top off” views of the RMC-1 (nothing in any great detail), but I’ve never seen anything relating to the XMC-1 retrofit.

The Oppos bitstream DSD over HDMI to be decoded BY pre-pros and AV receivers. How do those pre-pros and AV receivers know the bitstream being inputted via HDMI is coming FROM an optical player?? How do they know that bitstreamed DSD from a music server is NOT an optical player?

Rich, as member you are of the Oppo Beta group, do you think I should return my 203? I have 30 days left to return mine to Crutchfield. I love the 203, but lets be honest, in a few months is going to be an obsolete piece of equipment with no support. I have set my mind already to return it

I bought a 203 for a vacation home and another 205 for my office.
Oppo will continue for at least 2 years to honor warranties.

So no, its a good solid product, I'd keep it.

Hahahaha. I put a reminder in my calendar for April 20th. Return window close on May 5th but most likely I'm keeping it. It's a fantastic UHD Blue Ray and CD player and I do a lot of demos of our subwoofers at home. I can't imagine me having an audiophile customer coming with a bunch of CDs and when open my rack they will find a "el cheapo" CD player to play their CDs... I'm also upgrading my projector with a JVC RS550 (when available) by the end of the year and the 203 is the perfect UHD player for JVC projectors.

I would keep it.

Let's look at history. Sony CDP-EX7000ES - a nice BluRay changer. I could have picked one up at the local Sony outlet (all the Sony outlets are now closed) when they were being closed out for $650.

They now sell on eBay for just under $3K.

Have not tried a Roku stick, but I power an exhaust fan for my cabinet with it. My bet is that it works fine.

The XMC-1 Gen 2 is back in stock and it's shipping with the V3 HDMI Board installed from factory.

Patiently waiting for them to contact those who reserved the v3 board Why do I have a feeling I'll be able to order it from their site (or by calling in) before they contact me? Anxious am I? YES!!!! I've been on the reserve this for almost a year now.
