With my surround Heights configured as Rear Height on the amp (which Auro still considers as Surround Heights) then Atmos and Auro can both use this configuration and I can keep my Top Surround (Voice Of God) ceiling speaker.

I have read that Atmos played on Auro speaker setup sounds better than Auro played on Atmos setup and Auro is my preferred option.

Its only a small(ish) narrow room so the surrounds being in the rear I don't think will overly negative effect.

And since it is only 5.1.4 Atmos and 10.1 Auro I don't have buy an external amp to power 11 Channels
If you do that and setup the surround hight speakers as back surround hights and not as surround hights, but place them as Auro 3D specs dictate there will be no difference for Auro 3D and they will work for Dolby Atmos as well? Since the angle will not be the 135o back surround angle will it be ok for Atmos or it would have been better not use them at all? By the way, How important is for the center speaker to be on the same hight as L, R?

Even Auro (can) sound as one of the best of the 3, its to bad Auro is very difficult concerning speaker setups.
I have the Denon X8500H for a few days and want a Top Front, Top Middle, Top Rear setup to keep my wife happy, and it looks in my room the best with 6 White KEF T101 on the ceiling.
And it sounds the best as i also tried Front and Rear Height.

Now at last Auro 3D will work with Surround Back but now it will not work with TF / TM / TR
Also using the 2 TM speakers for VOG is not possible.
What ever setup i do (exept for a VOG TS) Dolby and DTS will play every setup you can think of, but Auro.....
Auro is shipped now "for free" with the 8500, think if i had to pay again for an Auro upgrade, i would not do this again.

By the way what are your thought on the Denon 8500 compared to the 7200?
Same only more

It is awsome! I was very happy with the 7200, and this is just more of the same. 13 built in amps, compared to only 9, support wides(only one in 2018), 6 heights, Auro Surround backs and center height, upgradable to HDMI 2.1, full 4K support. A insane powerhouse all in one box

That beeing said, in a normal (up to) 7.1.4 setup, i am not sure you could hear any difference. The 7200 is still a smoking deal.

Thanks for the feedback
Totally agree i couldn't see the justification in moving up from my 7200 but i am glad i did
I have only set distances and levels manually and could happily skip EQ ( obviously I wont)
Sonically I think it sounds better great imaging an panning and sound placement so no regrets so far

Jumanji would cost £31 sterling which is a bit steep so not sure if I will bother
That said it might be worth it for codec demo comparisons

Getting the most of Auro3D with my setup?

Hey guys - My Marantz 8805 got a firmware upgrade which added Auro3D. I just got my first taste of Auro3D (native and Auromatic upmixer) and was really impressed! I started with the Auro3D upmixer on David Gilmour's Live at Pompeii which is DTS HD MA 5.1. With the Auro3D upmixer applied it sounded fantastic. Comparatively the Dolby upmixer (DTS HD MA + Dolby Surround) sounds muddy and flat. And listening to the native Auro3D from the 2014 Auro demo disc sounded fantastic. The music clips are certainly the most 3D my audio has ever sounded.

As a quick background, I have a dedicated room that was professionally designed and engineered acoustically with room treatments etc. I have a "traditional" Atmos 9.4.6 speaker layout (but I am only running this as 9.4.6 due to limitations of my 8805). By this I mean my my ceiling speakers are in-ceiling and placed within the guidelines Dolby provides. Further, I do not have a top center (VOG) speaker. I prewired for one, but adding one would still be VERY expensive and difficult, because of my star ceiling.

Despite having an Atmos layout and no VOG, Auro3D sounds amazing. And although my sample size is limited to just the 2014 Auro Demo disc, it seems Auro could sound significantly better than Atmos or DTS:X does!

How much does not having a VOG impact my setup? And how much is not having a traditional Auro speaker layout hurting things (as I said, it sound amazing, but hard to know how much better it would be with the ideal setup)? In listening to the test tones "left speaker, right speaker", I was surprised that when it got to the VOG channel, that speaker sounds like it is coming from the front center of the room. My MLP is perfectly centered around my front and rear Height speakers, so I would have thought the 8805 could emulate a VOG by using the front/height speakers. That said, things like flyovers DO sound like they properly pan overhead. So that leaves me wondering how that works so well, when the VOG tones clearly sound like they come from the FRONT of the room instead of directly overhead, and how that may be affecting things - perhaps its not much to be concerned with.

At any rate, it all seems like a bit of a moot point because there just isn't much content for what I like to watch and listen to. I spend most of my time watching movies, for which there is hardly any Auro material. And for music, there doesn't seem to be much besides some classical music. It seems there there has been virtually no traction at all over the past 4 years when it comes to Auro for movies. Perhaps they are focusing on music. And considering I get all my music from Tidal HiFi MQA via streaming, I don't think I'll be getting any Auro music streamed any time soon it seems...

Is there a master list of all Auro content and where it can be purchased?

Also - Does anyone know where I can get Rise of the Guardians on Blu-ray in Auro? The demo clip is spectacular. However when I look at the specs for the movie on Blu-ray.com, it does not show it available in Auro. Do I have to purchase this from over seas, and where? This is so fantastic sounding in Auro I must have it! Thanks!

Auro3D was DOA since inception. VB's promises never materialized and we have been left with the benefits of Auromatic. Europeans have enjoyed a few releases with Auro3D, but as you know that hasn't happened in the States. The good news is you can still use it for DTS and I believe outputting PCM will allow you to continue to use Auromatic for Dolby.

Can't fault Dolby for protecting its investment, you should be made at VB. Those of us who bought the upgrade back when he was promising the moon ended up getting a $200 upmixer. Not a fan of reverb and have found Neural to be better when listing to a 5.1 SACD - so no music advantage anymore either.

Good luck with the messaging.

So how would those of us in the U.S. go about buying some of these movies with Auro3D? For instance I'd love to pick up a copy of Lucy and Rise of the Guardians, and others.

well, if you think it's dead anyway, then there would be little use in defending against it, would there?

Auromatic isn't the interesting portion, an Auro3D-track is better even without decoding it - it's a huge benefit already on the mixing/downcoding side. No one is going to start recording music in Dolby format alone, as it's being done with Auro3D, Dolby is just losing out on not allowing Auro to make money for them.

That the US hasn't caught on... well... not my fault... either it's lobbying.... or they're just more stupid over there.

VB may very well be over-promising, but at least he's one of the few who understands how immersive audio should be done.

Thanks. Sorry I missed the part where you said to buy from Amazon.de earlier. I just looked there and found two listings here https://www.amazon.de/Hüter-Lichts-B.../dp/B00Q9RD87K and here https://www.amazon.de/Hüter-Lichts-B.../dp/B00AYBGYEQ . Those are the only two listings. In both cases there's nothing that says whether those are the versions that have Auro included (no specifications on the audio tracks at all) and also there is red text that says the product will not ship to the US. I wonder then if it is even possible for us in the US to purchase these movies with Auro3D?

If you like it great, debating immersive formats is like arguing about TVs, if the customer is happy that's great in my book. If you look at that list over half the titles are movies that I wouldn't consider to be anything to write home about. Good luck in the battle against Dolby. I tried Auro and all I can say is "meh!" Guess the secret sauce didn't taste good to me

But again, happy it meets your needs. As for the stupid comment - can't argue - look who we elected President.

You can't, even if you buy from Amazon.de. The only way to get an immersive audio track for either of those movies is to buy the 4K version of Lucy. But it's an Atmos track. Rise of the Guardians is 7.1. You can get the same buy buying those locally. See post by @smurraybhm.

Maybe not recording, but certainly mixing in Atmos:

R.E.M., KISS, Metallica, Imagine Dragons, Mumford & Sons, Roger Waters, Kraftwerk, Hans Zimmer, Zubin Mehta, Lichtmond, Michael Schenker, Luca Turilli, Sammi Cheng; plus several opera and lots of classical music (Norwegian music label 2L alone has over a dozen Atmos titles).

Who are the big names recording (or mixing) music in Auro?

Actually in this case, it makes for a stronger argument. If Auro is shut down, I do not have any reason to get a new receiver/processor - so Dolby won't make any license money off me, which they would if I bought one to get Auro.

Given how this discussion has gone with lack of Bluray content fair to say that Auro3D is a non starter in the US and UK so the only thing that can be lost is the upmixer, so what

As for Auro being shut down dream on
Auro was there well before Dolby Atmos
you only need to look at the website and especially the videos to see it has more than one egg in its basket it is established in European cinemas and is doing very well thank you
I don't think anyone at Auro is losing any sleep

I don't think anyone on AVS would want to see Auro fail - hopefully. We are talking about receivers/pres and amps on this thread, not what's happening in a movie theater and going head to head with Dolby is an uphill climb at best be at home or a movie theater.

Competition is good, but the lack of content on blu-ray/UHD and little enthusiasm outside of Europe (being kind on that since we are talking about a small number releases) is killer. Then you have had only D&Ms support for a number of years with a few more higher end units added or coming (supposedly - talking about Emo). Until you see Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony, etc. making it available, its a niche upmixer at best. At least D&M did away with the $200 fee this year on some of its models and finally added support for rear surrounds on their two top of the line units. The inability to do rear surrounds was something I missed watching movies.

Reviewing the list of releases reminded me of the great debates when Mr. Barnes was active on this thread. We had Bowling Balls from Belgium as the new release for Auro outside of Red Tails pitted against a small but quickly growing list of Atmos titles. Where's Keith when you need him

Regardless of what your favorite flavor is, I'm just glad to see more and more releases (especially on UHD) have immersive mixes. Big improvement from 2014.

Auro-2D . . .thoughts?

I have Auro available on my Denon 4400, but only have a 5.1 setup, so I can only access Auro-2D. I do like how it sounds for stereo sources . . more of a "stereo on steroids" presence than a full surround, such as Dolby Surround or DTS: Neural X. Any audiophiles have thoughts as to comparison of these different surround modes?

@Lesmor . Do you have any advice on a good retail source for BR discs in Germany, Europe, UK. I travel to somewhere in Europe once a year and would like to purchase some Auro discs. In the US, I would recommend Best Buy for a visitor for an easy source. Is there an equivalent(s) in Europe? My next trip is to Toulouse and Bilbao in September.

@lovingdvd . I just uploaded Auro 13.1 to my X8500 and gave Auromatic it's first try on the 2K BR of 12 Strong. It's native DTS-HD 5.1. If ever there were a film that cries out for overhead effects, it's this one. I have the full Auro 13.1 speaker layout. During the movie, I toggled between the native 5.1 and Auromatic. Auromatic did not magically add sounds to the direct overhead. The MLRS rocket launches flew directly overhead in the visual, but didn't make it there in the soundtrack. Helicopters are most often mentioned when talking about "overhead" sounds. When the helicopters are visible in the visual, Auromatic did move the sound up to the wall/ceiling interface, but not above when there was an overhead flight. The native 5.1 sound was noticably flat compared to Auromatic, which added a lot of "volume" to the environment. The most noticable difference, though, was in the music sound track. In Auromatic, the music was simply "there", rather than coming from speakers. I did not toggle thru Auromatic/DSU and Neural:X for comparison. That's for another day.

You have been posting on this thread for over 2 years. Why haven't you jumped previously? Which Auro processors were you considering prior to the recent development of Dolby restricting upmixing?

Solutions: The Oppo universal players allow switching between bitstream and PCM on the fly. Players that don't can be set to PCM at all times to bypass any upmixing restrictions. Because Auro3D is interleaved within the LPCM stream, even if compressed with dts-HD MA, it will still be decoded as Auro3D if unpacked to PCM in the Blu-ray player.

Also, I don't think any company makes money from licenses when you buy a AVR/AVP second-hand. Why not buy second-hand?

Hi Tedd
Unfortunately I live in Scotland other than to say possibly look for a Media Mart store

the AURO logo looks to be very prominent on the back of the packaging so looking in any local German retailers would be a good bet

I am still considering getting Jumanji welcome to the jungle UHD from Amazon.de (Germany) purley due to having both a Dolby Atmos and Auro disc
Expensive but as I have just added the Auro firmware to my Denon 8500 and as a one off buy for demo purposes I might just bite the bullet
