Onkyo TX-NR1030 Owner's Thread

I'm very interested in this receiver, as it looks to be an able successor to my TX-NR809(which continues to serve me very well with no problems for over two years), since it seems to have all the features I would need for the future addition of a 4K TV and a 4K Blu-ray standard. I'm particularly interested in its inclusion of balanced outputs for the front L/R channels, which is something I don't think has previously been offered on receivers. It also includes HDMI 2.0, built-in Wi-fi and Bluetooth. I'd be interested in others' thoughts and opinions on it! Looks like the list price will be $1699.00.

I'm too are at least considering it.
But the real home theatre geeks won't forgive Onkyo for abandoning Audyssey.

I personally don't understand, how anyone can prejudge this AVR, never even heard it before

Yeah, never even used Audyssey on my 809, and it sounds great to me.

And, I guess I should explain that the reason I never fooled with Audyssey is that I like to run my front L/R and surrounds in full range, and my guess is that Audyssey is going to set something to "small" anyway. And I don't have a center speaker either, so not sure how much Audyssey would help.

That is interesting. Maybe it's an indication of improved preamp and amp quality.

Did anyone happen to catch the S&V measurements for the NR838? That's unusual for a receiver and I'm wondering if the higher models will perform like ths.

"Crosstalk at 1 kHz driving 2.83 volts into an 8-ohm load was –88.28 dB left to right and –94.71 dB right to left"
mtrot likes this.

I'm also eagerly awaiting this. The lack of Audyssey is not a big deal for me, but the XLR outputs, Atmos, extra zones and pure analog mode are exactly what I want. The pure analog mode will allow me to share my speakers between 2ch high quality signal path and HT.

Anyone know of the release date? Should be soon, I expect?

Anyone else notice Amazon delayed the shipment again? Mine shows estimated shipping to be between December 1st and January 1st. I pre-ordered it back in August

Pure analog mode, one of the big reasons why I chose my NR838

Im very happy with it, although the only analog source I play through it is my Music Hall MMF 5.1 turntable>>>iFi phono preamp>>>Onkyo 838. It sounds great.

Anyone get theirs? Amazon said it should be shipping out this week from them, and I see another vendor through Amazon has it in stock.

OK, it's good that these are now getting out into the public, and hopefully we will get some good reviews soon. As I posted earlier, this is a very intriguing receiver because it offers balanced outputs for the front R/L channels, which are the most important to me. Once Amazon gets an ample supply of them, I wonder how soon the price will drop down around $1100?

Well, FWIW, there is one review up now on Amazon, and it is very positive.

Looks like Onkyo has dropped the manual equalizer from the 2014 models (at least for NR1030 as there is no mention of it in the manual)...

I just got a 1030 a few days ago from Amazon through onecall, they said the condition was used-like new. Far as i can tell it was never opened, everything was still sealed, i saved $400.00 off msrp, it was even double boxed. So far i like it, sounds slightly better and more detailed than my previous Onkyo. Video quality seems the same as well, very good, to my Vizio 70" 4k tv, xb1 games look good. I tried 4k 60hz to the pc and it works with my 980 although it will not work in sli mode. One thing i find interesting is the osd is disabled in 4k 60hz mode so you cant get detailed info on picture and sound like in other modes, maybe a firmware update will change that.

The 828. I actually just bought it about two months ago new. Main reasons for getting the 1030 was 4k @ 60hz and balanced stereo outputs.

I the receiver will be powering your speakers, I'm not so sure about that upgrade. The reason is that you would be going from the next to the top of their receivers to a more mid-level unit, in terms of the amplifier section of the receiver. If you are using separate amp(s), then I would think the 1030 is the way to go.

Yes in terms of the new features and Dolby Atmos, it would be an upgrade. But in terms of Onkyo's line, you would need to go to the 3030 to even make a lateral move. Over the years, Onkyo has tended to lighten these receivers up. You could always try the 1030 out and return it if the sound is not as good as the 3010.

Thanks, i used 3010 as pre (external amp: B&K 200.7). i compare onkyo 5509 - 3010 so 3010 is less good as 5509 (32bit DAC....). i like XLR out on 1030 (the best if onkyo add center chanel XLR out).
need some other idea?

I've been holding off on any sort of official review since I'm not truly utilizing its full capabilities. Though I will say this thing is absolutely incredible so I'll make a rather short review for now.

  • This thing is REALLY large, and since I don't own a home I took it down to my parents lake cabin to test it out and it wouldn't fit where we had mounted the Onkyo 528 ( Guessing at that model number ). So I had to set it ontop of my Klipsch 12" sub temporarily.
  • Calibration was a breeze, though I ran into an issue with it not allowing me to go into Dolby Atmos UNLESS a height speaker was installed. It states this in the manual though after the calibration was complete I was able to go into the settings and manually tell it I had height speakers, thus allowing Dolby Atmos to work.
  • I wired it up to Klipsch RF82s, RC62, 12" Reference sub ( 12rwd? ).
  • This thing gets LOUD, for once in my life I feel it gets too loud.. Though this may have a lot to do with the horrible sound dynamics of my parents living room. I am able to play this at 0db just fine on Transformers using Dolby Atmos without any distortion, though the 12" sub is working a bit too hard here.
  • I love that all the speaker terminals run horizontal on the rear of the receiver, this makes for a much easier installation when you have a few wires going to it.
  • It already came updated with the latest firmware which was a huge plus.
  • It worked straight out of the box with my Logitech Harmony Ultimate, I didn't even need to reprogram it as the commands from the old Onkyo continued to work on the 1030.
  • One thing I've noticed so far is Sound Pass through doesn't appear to be working correctly. On my setup I have the surround setup in the living room, a TV on the back deck, and a TV downstairs.. If I use sound pass through to get sound to play in the living room, back deck, and downstairs then only Stereo mode can work and doesn't allow Atmos to be selected in the living room. The receiver gets stuck in <TV Speakers> mode. Perhaps operator error and someone can enlighten me?

Unfortunately I don't have any height speakers to really go into how well Dolby Atmos sounds, but hopefully in time and I'll make more of an official review.

I just got this last night and hooked it up replacing my Onkyo TX-SR805. The intention of my upgrade was to get more HDMI inputs and try out Dolby Atmos.

I didn't have much time with it either but my first impressions:

It took a minute to figure out where to plug in the additional Atmos speakers with the Height 1, Height 2 lingo.

The thing seems to have a boot process which is expected since it's packed full of features but I find waiting (seconds) for TV's and receivers to boot annoying. The first time setup was very much like setting up a computer for the first time with it's setup wizard. I chose to forego this wanting to make sure all my speakers work. I have the M&K LCR 750 set along with the unattractive Onkyo Atmos speakers.

The remote is a bummer. There are a few buttons missing like the tone, channel select, sleep button. Also it's not all back lit. The android app didn't offer these options either. I guess their idea is to go into the on screen menu. The one that came with the 805 is better and works with the 1030 although mine is falling apart.

Component switching (all HDMI) seemed to take milliseconds longer. Even changing TV channels with different resolutions seemed to take a bit longer.

Turning up/down the volume is quicker than the 805.

Downloading the latest firmware enabling Spotify was a breeze. Hopefully they’ll continue to offer improvements over time (and let us know what they are).

After calibrating the sound I put in Age of Extinction with Dolby Atmos and immediately was blasted with boomy sound from the first scene. The front and left speakers were set to 150Hz and the subwoofer was set to 120Hz. I changed these to 80Hz and was better off. After watching a couple scenes from Age of Extinction I wasn’t too impressed with Atmos. I need to do a little bit more tweaking to ensure everything is setup properly.

I put in various action movies, Star Wars, T2, Avatar, Into Darkness, and played several scenes. The sound wasn’t as full as I expected but I seemed to hear more things I haven’t heard before. By the way, I played these via Plex. They didn’t play at first so I realized I had to go into the Plex audio preferences and change the settings to match the new receiver.

So far, so good. I'll be playing around with the settings later....

Update. The Atmos feature seems to add more to the sound field but I wasn't blown away. I usually don't like enhancements (THX, NEO, etc.) enabled but I leave the Dolby Atmos Surround on even when watching non Atmos content.

Sounds great with Far Cry 4 on the PS4.

I found the sleep button conveniently located at the top of the remote.

i'm thinking to benefit from atmos fully would require a true coaxial style ceiling speaker rather than those modules that bounce the sound off the ceiling.
