To amend what I said about using a single HDMI cable between my k8500 through the x2200w AVR and to the tv.

I get random black screens while the audio continues when running a single cable from the k8500 through the AVR to the tv. Everything works when it works but oddly it will drop video out like that. Gonna have to go back to using dual HDMI. Can't deal with black screens during movies

I'll report here that I have ben using a single, 10' 5+ year-old HDMI cable from the K8500 to my X4200 through another 10', 5+year-old HDMI cable (typically shopped around for the cheapest, thickest ones I could find; I believe one of them was even provided by Verizon when they installed FiOS) to my 78HU9000 (w/SEK-3500) without any issue whatsoever; both before and after the DTS:X update)

Main: UN78HU9000/SEK-3500 | X4500H (5.1.4) | UDP-203 | TiVo Bolt | 2019 Shield | PS4 Pro | Roku P+ (4630)
2nd: UN65JS9500 | LG LAS855M | UBD-K8500 | Chromecast Ultra | TiVo Mini | Roku P+
3rd: 65P-F1 | Klipsch HDT-SB3 | UBP-X700 | Tivo Roamio | AppleTV4K

Well after it did it twice within the first 45minutes it never did it again. Don't know what to say. I'm not sure which part of the chain is the problem. The cables work because I do get HDR and Atmos at the same time. It's just a couple times a random black screen. I'll continue like this and see if I encounter any more problems like that. I can't place blame on the AVR because I'm not even sure it's the AVR that is the problem in this case. The player could have had a hiccup(to use a figure of speech) for all I know.

Well, I ran XT32 twice today and the same result. Speakers and subs set much lower than before the latest FW update. I could understand the levels being affected after the update, but now XT32 is still setting them low when it is run after the update. I could chalk it up to an amp issue (I have an Outlaw), but the subs are set lower than normal as well.

Not sure what the deal is but I level matched with my SPL meter, I’d just caution folks their levels may be wonky right now.

In case someone wants to bring it up, I run XT32 the same (for about the last 3 years) way every time, and I have two different CM140 SPL meters so the results are verified. I always found my subs to be a few db lower than the speakers (which have always been properly set by XT32 around 74-75db), but now the speakers are about 5db low and the subs are about 9db low…

Test sounds are from spears and munsil 2 thru the Oppo 103d (-30dbfs and -40dbfs tones).

X3200 here so no DTS update. I always babied my mic. I gently coiled up the wire and always placed it in a gallon ziplock bag, and it lived in its own drawer in the house.

For no reason whatsoever, it suddenly set all speakers 5db low from where it did for it's previous 10-15 calibrations........Same speakers, same location, same room, same state, same planet.

I used my mic from my broken X2000 (same model # on mic, and verified with jd in this thread) and I got my exact usual correct results, verified with my outboard test tones and spl meter.

I opened a chat with Denon warranty, told them what happened and he asked me to upload a picture of my receipt & serial number, and then he sent me a new mic, no more questions asked.

Don't know why my mic broke, but it did.

I would consider the mic, if the error had not been found after the update, which was a few weeks after a XT32 run that was verified at 75db after it was complete. I mean everything was fine, I updated, noticed I needed higher volume levels than normal, and found it about 5db low with the meter.

I figured no big deal, the update broke something with the XT32 cal. Well, it seems to be more than that I guess.

Just to break it down:

Issue was found after the FW update, which was after an already verified XT32 cal
I thought about an Outlaw amp issue, but the subs are also lower than normal
It is repeatable between XT32 runs and two different CM140 spl meters
Id blame it on the X4200 or mic if this was the first run, but I have had the AVR for a month.

Im out of ideas to disprove it wasnt the FW update. I have a standard practice of breaking out the spears test disc and level checking every 2 weeks or so to check for problems, this is the first time after a couple of years of checking I have ever seen this issue.

I had my X3200 for 3 months and did at least 10 3/5/7/8pt calibrations all with the same trims +/- .5db, and then like I said, boom trims were all down 5db. Maybe the same happened to you, but the coincidental timing makes you think it's the firmware update's fault.

Anyway, just a thought and a quick chat with Denon would get you a new mic in 5 days............

I get what you are saying about the mic issue you had, but this chain of events rules out the mic to me:

  • Installed X4200W
  • Ran XT32
  • Verfied 75db levels for speakers and raised subs to 75db (about 5db low which is norm)
  • Next week reverfied 75db levels for ALL
  • Installed FW update on 18th or 19th
  • Noticed volume levels seemed to be an issue in following days
  • Tested with SPL meter and found speakers AND subs now reporting 69-70db
  • Ran XT32 twice today and subs and speakers were set 70db or lower both times, as verified by two different spl meters.

I think a processor reset is the next step and rerun XT32 again. I hoping something happened with the FW update, or maybe something in between the FW update and the next time I level checked.

Note: You don't actually need an external amp to test this, rather simply just trying to make the configuration setting.
This can be set via OSD. The web GUI doesn't let one set "Pre out" to "Front" but that's probably just a bug as it also doesn't work with other configurations.

So then, to confirm, it is possible to configure for the X4200W to power all 4 height speakers? Does the GUI/OSD show the Height 2 speakers connect to the Front Wide posts?

Most likely a result of the HDMI cable you're using not being capable to pass the new 4k/UHD video. Are you using one of the newer "premium" 18gbps 4k HDMI cables < 20' in length?

Yes, front height and rear height are powered from the AVR. L/R speakers need an external amp connected to the L/R preamp out.

Question Way to hide "Mute" icon on screen?

Just got a Denon AVR-S910W and noticed that when you mute the receiver, a big icon appears on the lower left of screen. At night when I play video games, I will often mute my receiver and use a headset. Is there a way in settings to hide this icon? It's kind of annoying.

Sorry, but no.

Best to just lower the volume until it is inaudible.

The airplay on my 4200 works great. I set up my laptop, build a queue of songs, and let it go.

I am saddened. I have spent hours researching and settled on x4200 or sr6010

Simple AirPlay seemed lik a given and requirement

So how broken is it? Does it not show up as a target??

Markus is correct. I just went in and set mine like this and it let me do it. In the terminal configuration it shows L&R on the pre-outs, center and surrounds on their respective speaker terminals, top front on the height 1 speaker terminals, and top rear on the front wide speaker terminals. I am getting my amp on Saturday and only have 5.1.2 right now so I haven't physically hooked anything up but at least the AVR will allow you to set it up that way. Once I get my amp I'll try it because it would be great if I could run my front towers off of the amp since it's rated very conservatively at 100 WPC to 8 ohms (Adcom GFA-545II).

Yeah, kinda thought that looking thru the menus and not seeing it :-(

Related question then... Since this receiver has a passthru mode, would that mean that I could just turn the receiver off when i want it "muted" and my Xbox one would pass the signal thru to my TV like normal? Since I dont' need the volume, just need the video signal sent.

I do have the pass thru set on the same input as my xbox one, and if i read it correctly, it should function like i described?

Related question then... Since this receiver has a passthru mode, would that mean that I could just turn the receiver off when i want it "muted" and my Xbox one would pass the signal thru to my TV like normal? Since I dont' need the volume, just need the video signal sent.

I do have the pass thru set on the same input as my xbox one, and if i read it correctly, it should function like i described?
Correct. You would then just mute the TV's speakers instead.

Thanks for confirming. I've edited post 1 to reflect this capability.

Yes I have new 4k Rocketfish cables, but now that you said that i had trouble getting bd wise back on with the 2 cable set up and i figured out i had the 2 cables reversed to by UHD BD so i may have put the single cable into the wrong port on my bd player. I will try it again tonight. thanks jd

\JD, you need to yell at them for us. We should not be forced to have overlays on screens under certain scenarios.

@fox_91
When your playing video games, as jd said, lower the volume. Then use one of the Quick Select [QS] buttons on the 910 remote to store your "Game" configuration. The QS button will easily allow you to switch to your "Game" configuration with the volume turned down.

Or, you can just turn off the AVR overlay by going to Settings>Video>Output Settings>Video Conversion set to Off

Just heard back from the repair shop after 2 weeks with my S710W. Apparently the receiver worked flawlessly in both wired and wireless modes over two dozen tests. This does not match my experience at all. To recap, during my testing (dozens of full resets over 3 days):

70% of the time - Networking options are almost completely greyed out
20% of the time - Allows me to scan for Wi-Fi networks, but doesn't find any
10% of the time - Finds and connects to my Wi-Fi network, but times out on Internet connection test after 15-20 minutes with an error message "XXXX Error", where "XXXX" is the networking module (can't remember the exact model #)

I bet once I get it home, I will have the same problem again. I'm about to pull my hair out

Whoah, if this is true, what amp is better for the towers? The low priced external amps that are typically recommended or the internal Denon? I doubt it is the Denon internals, but can someone look into this?

And heck, if this is the case, what kind of amps should people consider for the mains? I'd be happy to go after $300 amp instead of a $150 amp. To keep sounds across the front sound stage even, does the Denon 4200 have a pre-out for a center channel? I personally would want a better amp for the centers than main/left even though I understand why people would want it the other way around (music).
