The "OFFICIAL" 2015 Denon "S-series" / "X-series" AVR Owner's thread + FAQ (HDCP 2.2)

2015 Denon AVR models ---> S510BT/S710W/S910W/X1200W/X2200W/X3200W/X4200W/X6200W

D&M USA should be making an official announcement mid June regarding the new 2015 USA Denon lower level AVR models [S510BT/S710W/S910W/X1200W/X2200W] so it's time to start the official 2015 thread. The announcement for the higher models X3200W and X4200W will be in late July with an announcement on the X6200W likely to be made in August. The 2014 "flagship" X7200W remains the flagship model for 2015 (although as of May 2015 is now being released with the HDCP 2.2 upgrade from the factory as the X7200WA) and has its own thread (actually 2 of them, (1) X7200WA Owners thread, and (2) Denon 2014 Atmos Owner's thread).

Last year we split up the threads into the Atmos and non-Atmos models so the lower level model thread wouldn't get inundated with Atmos questions. However, because Atmos will be featured on all 2015 models (except the S510BT), we're going to only have a single thread as the setup and troubleshooting questions asked generally have the same answer regardless of the model.

What's new or to be added via firmware update for the 2015 models?

All Models
- HDMI 2.0a(HDR10) hardware and firmware is installed on all models.

S510BT
- HDMI 2.0a(HDR10)/HDCP 2.2 on "3" HDMI inputs, able to pass through 4k/60Hz/4:4:4 color sub-sampling
- Bluetooth Remote app
- ECO Mode

S710W/S910W/X1200W/X2200W/X3200W/X4200W/X6200W

- HDMI 2.0a(HDR10)/HDCP 2.2 on "all" HDMI inputs, able to pass through 4k/60Hz/4:4:4 color sub-sampling (see post 7 for models with upscaling feature)
- Advanced Quad-core 32-bit DSP processor (except the X4200W and X6200W which will retain the 4x 24 bit DSPs used in the X4100W and X5200W which results in the higher processing power required for XT32 + Atmos).

- Atmos 5.2.2 capable (additionally, although not new and being continued from the X4100W/X5200W: X4200W able to expand to 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 with 2CH amp; X6200W is 5.2.4/7.2.2 out of box and able to expand to 7.2.4 or 9.2.2 with 2CH amp --> refer to post 5668 in this thread for more information on how to connect a 2CH amp)
- Dolby Surround upmixer (DSU) to simulate 5.1/7.1 audio from a 2.0/5.1 source (to include audio to the height speakers when not playing an Atmos BD) which has replaced Dolby Digital ProLogic, DD PLIIz, and DD PLIIx (continued from X4100W --> X4200W and X5200W --> X6200W).
- Note: The DSU can no longer be used on DTS HD audio (as is the case on the 2014 models) until a future firmware update is installed to allow cross format upmixing. Until the DTS:X update is installed, to simulate DTS HD audio to "height" speakers you must set the Blu Ray player to PCM (vice bitstream).
- Dolby Sp. Setup - set the distance from the Dolby enabled speaker (FD, SD, RD) to the ceiling

- DTS:X + DTS Neural:X (via firmware update Feb 2016 [X6200W/X4200W] and late summer 2016 [X3200W/X2200W/X1300W/S910W/S710W] - see post 8 for additional information).
- DTS:X Dialog Control - able to increase dialog volume when receiving a DTS:X signal (note: this setting is only avaliable when the movie's sound engineer has included it in the DTS:X audio track, as of 6/2/2016 this feature has not been enabled in the currently released DTS:X movies)
- DTS Neural:X - ON/OFF
- DTS firmware version (note: If this is listed under SETUP - GENERAL - INFORMATION - FIRMWARE, the DTS:X update has been installed)

- Remote app - New 2016 Denon AVR Remote apps (iOS and Android) will be released early 2016 (only for 2015 and newer models though):
Android --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dmholdings.DenonAVRRemote&hl=en
iOS ---> https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/denon-2016-avr-remote/id982072900?mt=8
- Flickr is no longer available (on any model)
- Smart Menu - Use the TV's remote control to configure the settings, select an input source and set Tuner and Internet Radio stations (not available on the X6200W)
- TV Audio Switching - sets whether the AVR automatically switches to the TV Audio source when using a TV smart app (defaults to ON)
- HDMI(ARC) - dedicated ON/OFF setting (not available on the X6200W)
- Headphone EQ - set whether to use the Graphic EQ
- Denon HEOS Link IP Control - with a HEOS Link connected (separate purchase), use the HEOS iOS/Android App to control the AVR (HEOS is Denon's new WiFi speaker system .. the HEOS Link can be used to stream a source connected to the AVR to wireless HEOS speakers located around your home in addition to being able to use the HEOS iOS/Android app to stream (Pandora, SiriusXM, Spotify Connect, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody, Tidal) directly to the HEOS Wifi speakers as well.)
- Wifi 802.11n supporting only 2.4Ghz (but not 5Ghz)
- WiFi (Enabled/Disabled) - disable Wifi when a wired connection is made to the modem
- Dolby Vision + HLG + ALLM - pass through capability to be added via a firmware update - August 2018
- ECO Mode

X4200W/X6200W
- 32 bit DAC - AK4458VN
- Auro 3D/2D paid upgrade ($199 USD) available (see post ##8 below) for download early 2016
- New amp assign settings which allow expanding from 7CH --> 9CH (X4200W) using the SB, FW, F, or HT1 speaker pre-outs

Expanding X4200W from 5.2.2 --> 5.2.4: See post 5671 in this thread.

Expanding X6200W from 7.2.2 or 5.2.4 --> 7.2.4: See post 5668 in this thread.

Unlike it's predecessor, Audyssey DSX is not featured. No noticeable difference in power or audio quality. Note however, that unlike the X2200W which has a 2nd main zone HDMI monitor output (ie. useful when TV and PJ are in the same room), the X3200W does NOT have this 2nd main zone HDMI output, rather only the Zone 2 HDMI output so if you are using the X3200W with a PJ and TV in the same room, you'll also need to purchase an HDMI splitter to connect to the main zone HDMI monitor output. Note also that the X3200W is fixed at operating at most 7CH (ie. 7.1 or 5.1.2; there is no expansion capability to add 2 more speakers for a 5.1.4 setup).

Welcome to the Official 2015 Denon AVR-S/X models thread (S510BT/S710W/S910W/X1200W/X2200W/X3200W/X4200W/X6200W).

If this is your first visit to this thread, and you want to ask a question about one of the 2015 Denon AVR models, either one that you own or one that you are thinking of buying, please provide the following information to allow for better responses to your questions:

(a) Identify the model number in question (eg. X2200W), as there are 8 different models (S and X series) discussed in this thread. Also if you have not posted in several days since your initial post, please post the model # again so we don't have to back track to learn which model you are referencing.

(b) Identify what you've done so far to troubleshoot the issue and what the front panel is displaying if an audio issue, (also take a few minutes to review the Troubleshooting section provided in post ##3 as your question may already be answered there),

(c) Unless you indicate what settings have been changed, the assumption will be that all settings are on the factory defaults (ie. usually "Auto"),

(d) If the advice given seems to simplistic or obvious, don't shoot the advice giver as we have no idea of the level of your technical understanding,

(e) If there is no response to your post, it either means no one knows the answer or it has simply been overlooked so please repost if you still haven't resolved your issue,

(f) If you post a question in this thread and are given advice and either it or some other advice (eg. Denon phone support, Denon "Ask a Question" email support) resolves your issue, have the common courtesy to post back what solution resolved your issue so others can learn from it as well,

(g) If the issue is not user error or not just a misunderstanding on how the AVR works, please call Denon support so the issue is registered,

(h) When responding to another post that is providing assistance to you, please press the "Quote" button in the lower right corner of that other poster's response so that response is also listed with your new post to provide some context, and,

(i) If you don't live in either the USA or Canada, please either indicate your country location in your profile or your post as some Denon models from other regions in the world differ in configuration from their USA/Canada counterparts otherwise responses made will be regarding the USA/Canada models.

From what little I have read it maybe DTS is requiring Denon to disable DSU with bitstreamed DTS tracks. Since supposedly PCM tracks are not affected this seems likely to be the case.

When converting Dolby Atmos to PCM is the metadata extracted as separate PCM tracks or does that information remain mixed in the conventional channel bed?

I will be in the market this year to purchase a new receiver and for sometime I had been debating some older models but the X7200WA or TBA SR7010 may be my best options. Mostly considering the X7200WA since there are some refurbished units likely to be available and closer to my budget when my Onkyo 805 brains give up the ghost.

What are folks impressions of the 7200 thus far? Is it sufficiently powerful with the processors not exhibiting any serious concerns?

Best regards,
KvE

Picked up the AVR-S910W

Hello,

Just joined, but have been reading on here for a while as now setting up my own first 'real' system (last was a 2.1 LG combined setup with a DVD Player; Circa 2007). Last system I had access to was back before college from around 2000-2003 (High end Denon Receiver / Amp / DVD Player / VHS / etc.), but that house was sold and everything left there so I don't have any idea of the specifics or model number, sound was 7.1 in wall / ceiling).

Anyways, just setting up the system and I had purchased the Pioneer Elite VSX-45 last Friday, but the Best Buys here (Virginia) just got in the new Denons mentioned in this thread (S710W, S910W and X1200W at least). I don't have too much to report as I'm waiting for my speaker cable and other required items to come in, but I'm setting up a system as per my signature below w/ Klipsch speakers (Quintet V + Reference Sub). I will be setting this all up on the top floor of a condo building, but I hope I can listen without disturbing the neighbor below me (sides aren't an issue) since we have concrete between floors.

My apologies for my first rambling post, very excited to join this forum officially and to give feedback once I get my system set up! I also have a wireless PS3/PS4 Headset (Sony Playstation Brand / Line) that connects to the system via a USB dongle, does anyone know if this headset could be made to work or is there any source to get some sort of a driver? for it, I know this may be impossible, but it would be great to get it to work.

Thanks for reading and I will update you with my impressions once I get the 910 set up.

It looks like the X3200W is already out and in stock at a few places. I'm seeing it in stock at 3 different authorized dealers. Can JD confirm that this is out now? Does this mean we may see an early release of the X4200W?
Yes. Looks like the X3200W has been released. We should get our first shipment by the end of next week. Pre-orders will be shipped first. No updated information on the release date for the X4200W.

Correct. Even a regular old DVD with a DTS track cannot utilize the DSU.
What? We can't engage DSU with the standard old DTS 5.1 on all the 2015 models (until DTS:X patch is out)? Going back to the old days of "SB ON" for 7.1?
Well, not quite. From what I understand (based primarily on JD's explanations to date), the issue resides with the proprietary HD codecs. The newly released 2015 Denon AVR's apparently do not allow for Dolby Surround upmixing on an incoming DTS-HD signal nor will they allow Neural:X upmixing on a Dolby TrueHD signal when the AVR is doing the decoding. A-DSX can still be applied to either codec, and the issue can be circumvented altogether when the signal is decoded in an external device and sent to the AVR as PCM.

Regardless of the number of DSP's, to me the argument that it was more likely a Denon decision where "they don't think DSU is necessary when the 2015 models are to eventually have the DTS upmixer" doesn't hold water. Denon (like most mfgrs) has long allowed all sorts of combinations of input signal and surround mode, including allowing this specific combination in the models that are being replaced! PLII and PLIIx coexisted with Neo:6 then DTS:X for years, happily intermingling in codec-jungle-fever pairings.

Remember the marketing slogan for AVR's -- people love knobs. Legacy settings stick around long past obsolescence because consumers get pissy when you take away tweaking options.

Seems much more likely that something else is going on...
That's my bet, and I am eager to hear the fuller explanation.

^^
Keep in mind all I have to go on is the Owner's manual .... you 2015 model owners are the front line testers. It was my understanding from the manual that DTS Surround = DTS + DSU which would be the case if audio is being simulated to your "height" speakers.
DTS Surround is actually the only option when playing a DTS track (well other than things like stereo, mono movie, etc.) So, if that is doing simulated height info, there's no way to turn it off.

Also, DTS Surround is only what the OSD says. The front display on the device simply says DTS.

#391 ·
Perhaps another 2015 Atmos model owner that has a 5.1.2 setup with "height" speakers can confirm that using "DTS Surround" pushes audio to the height speakers? Also with only a 5.1 setup, you may still be able to test this by turning the AVR to Standby and connecting the Surround speakers to the Surround Back speaker posts and then powering on and changing the AMP ASSIGN to one of the "height" speaker settings (eg. "Front Height"). Note doing so will disable Audyssey, but Audyssey is not in question here.

#392 ·
One of the questions asked early on was whether the new DTS Neural:X would support Front Wide speakers. We had to wait for the X4200W owner's manual as the X3200W no longer supports Front Wide speakers. As noted below, it can now be confirmed that Front Wide will indeed be supported by DTS Neural:X on the X4200W and X6200W models.
This is going to be interesting, if DTS Neural:X is at least as good as DSU I could keep my wides in favor of back surrounds. My MLP is close to the back wall so I would prefer the wides.

Also curious if the 6200 will have the same limitation as the 2200 (no DSU with DTS). For me this would swing the choice to the 7200.

Guess we have to wait a little longer..

#393 · (Edited)
This is not the case. I have an X2200W and I popped in a DVD last night with a regular old DTS audio track. DSU was not selectable, you got the same options you do with any of the DTS-HD codecs.
OK, then, scratch that theory.:)

Your experience would seem to track with the info in your owner's manual (see attached charts from pp. 130-1, which are essentially identical to those in the X4200 manual), showing the proprietary upmixers only operative in combination with their respective multi-channel Dolby or DTS codecs regardless of type.

Of course, the manuals have contained errors in the past, so I guess anything is still possible pending an authoritative explanation of what's going on. Is this a temporary restriction? Will the "cross-pollinating" upmixing functionality be restored at some point after the DTS:X upgrade? Is there any difference between the HDCP 2.2-upgraded X7200W/WA models (which were Neo:X capable) and the 2015 models (which presumably have no provision for built-in Neo:X upmixing)?

Inquiring minds want to know!

The X6200W will most certainly have the same limitation and more than likely when the DTS:X update is added to the X7200WA, so to shall it then have the same limitation. However, at least with the X7200WA, you have the capability of still using DSU until the DTS:X update is installed, then after the update is installed on the 2015 models and X7200WA, it doesn't really matter as you would use DSU with DD and DTS Neural:X with DTS.

That's true, you would have no choice then (other then putting out PCM). But off course one of the two upmixers is the best "there can be only one"

I expect they will be very similar in overall effect with the exception of a few distinctive features. However, one salient difference we know of at this point is the ability to engage the FW with Neural:X (as well its predecessor Neo:X and A-DSX), while DSU in its current iteration does not recognize this channel. So let's say you prefer the wider front soundstage that FW affords, if your content is encoded in a Dolby codec, you're SOL unless you're willing to change the source setting from bitstream to PCM and back for this sole purpose. That's not very user friendly and definitely not a WAF.

So the Denon (X1200W) is all setup and no crackle through Airplay. There are some improvements out of the box already over the Onkyo (646):

1. Build - it is considerably smaller and better looking
2. Audessy - Much more advanced 8 point room setup
3. AirPlay - Works perfectly
4. Interface - Still from the 90's but a good 10 years on the Onkyo
5. Speed - it is probably 3X as fast to boot up and use
6. Sound - Feel like you win some but lose some; actually prefer the liveliness of the Onkyo at the top end but the Denon handles stereo separation superbly.

All in all - sad to see the Onkyo go, the sound was beautiful and accurate but as an all-rounder, the Denon is a breeze; no drama and superior quality.

#400 ·
It appears so -- I just checked the SR5010 manual and the tables in the appendix indicate the smae info as in the Denon manauls.

No big surprise as they are basically cloned platforms, almost all features, settings, etc. are the same.
I assumed but hoped!
