I own the Yamaha RX-675 and have listened to the Onkyo 838 extensively and really loved its dynamics but thought my cheaper yamaha had more detail, somehow.

Now, ive been itching for a receiver upgrade, and having read all the rave reviews I am considering these receivers.

Some people repórt a huge difference in sound quality going from the 800 to the 900. Is that your experience?

Also, do these subs have subwoofer EQ or they just adjust distance (delay) and level?? I have the minidsp 2x4 doing that job and i love it. Just want to make sure if i will need it in case i decide to go this onkyo route.

Thanks!

I've moved from Yamaha RX-V677 to Onkyo TX-RZ900 and can assure you that this was a huge improvement in terms of sound quality. Better dynamics, the mid range is a lot more revealed and the sound is crisp, tight and much better compared to the Yamaha where the high frequencies were over everything else and it was not possible to have an extensive listening at higher volume levels.

The 2nd Gen of AccuEQ is EQ-ing the Subwoofer too and in my setup AccuEQ is Off for the fronts only. Unfortunately I can't tell you if there is a difference in the quality between 800 and 900 as I haven't listened to 800 but from other people's opinion it seems there is such a difference.

For sure all this is subjective and depends on a lot of factors, like room acoustic, speakers etc.

At the end, if you can afford or find some deal for the 900 don't bother to wonder, go and buy it, you won't regret.

Hi, just got my TX-RZ900 yesterday. Looks like I got everything hooked up okay, only one problem. When I go to listen to "sat/cbl" there is no sound. I have my Directv plugged into the sat/cbl and the main out to my Samsung. I tried my Apple TV and works fine, I tried the Sirius network and it works fine. Everything is working but the Samsung TV. Could it be the he I cable?

You might want to check the DirecTV audio out settings.

Can anyone confirm if the 800 will pass through h.d.r. without banding? I have been reading a lot of complaints of the 646 not being able to pass hdr without problems. Thanks for any info. Major deal breaker for me if it has the same 646 issues

Only issues I'm having are handshake issues, but that is mostly with my tv as I've tried direct inputs too. When the handshake works I have not experienced banding on hdr. I have the 900 though but should in theory be approximately the same

I had handshake issues with my 900 and my Sony projector, but resolved them by using a monoprice splitter in the middle.

I noticed humming when I used the "Dolby surround sound" option from my Directv box. Changed it to PCM and it's clear now, but not a lot of bass. What setting do other people use from Directv box? Or how do you fix to much hum?

Hi, I tried to put a usb-thumb drive in the back to play flac music files but it's not working. I can see the files on the drive but will not play. Is there something I need to do? Do I need a different kind of usb storage to play these files?

Smile Awesome Sound

I loved my pair of Onkyo TX-SR705 – replaced it with Onkyo TX-NR609 (1080p driven buy) and again sold it to buy Onkyo TX-NR636 (Atmos driven buy). I also have Pioneer SC-1522K in the basement (9.2 channel Neo:X) – all producing anemic, high treble sound at best.
I loved the power and soundstage of TX-SR705, and my one of my biggest regret till date is not buying TX-SR805 in 2007 (1080p, 60 lb. beast).

Kept searching for the soundstage and sheer enjoyment a great receiver could bring. Onkyo added Bluetooth, USB, and bunch of goodies but took away the joy of listening. Class D amplifiers of Pioneer - to me sounded great for movies, unbearable for music.

With TX-RZ900 Onkyo has created great sound machine - movie, music, and soundstage - awesome amplifier that I plan to enjoy for next 5 to 7 years.

Sub hum and audio signal drop

Hello all, I haven't had my 800 long but have got an issue with the sound across HDMI inputs. This is being discussed over on another AV forum I am on but I have also just dropped the following to Onkyo UK's support email. Does anyone else have anything like I am describing to them below?

Quote:
I recently purchased the TX-RZ800 and, overall, am very happy with it...it is a big step up in sound quality over my previous Yamaha.

However, I have had an issue since I first set it up that, no matter how much I look into every set up option, I don't seem to be able to remedy. After speaking to other owners of the same receiver on both AV Forums and AVS Forums, it seems this is a common issue so I hope you can help to solve it.

The issue is that, no matter what HDMI input is used or what source, there is a noticeable dull and low thump from the subwoofer and then a hum every time a signal is sent to it. It's quite hard to explain but this is not the only symptom of this problem. There also seems to be a delay between the receiver acknowledging that is has detected a sound signal and then outputting it to the speakers.

I suppose, with my limited knowledge, the best way to describe it is that, in instances such as blu ray menus or on games console menus, where there is no sound being output until you start to move around the menu options or the console dashboard (usually accompanied by a sound cue such a 'blip' or 'ping') there is complete silence for a second or two...then the sub can be heard to 'kick in' and hum at the same time as the sounds from moving around the menu's very quickly cut in. As I say, it's as though the receiver is not sending the output to the speakers all the time until it 'see's' a signal, and then it takes a second or two to catch up.

This is not so noticeable when watching movies, tv or in games....but the sub hum can still definitely be heard during quiet moments when listening at reference levels.

Just for extra info, I have tried a number of high and low priced HDMI cables as I have a lot to hand, across all the devices, and the same issue has been apparent with all. I have also connected across all the HDMI inputs, including the front panel, from a number of different devices and, again, all have exhibited this issue.

For further info, the rest of the equipment being used is as follows:

LG 55 LM640T LED 3D TV
Onkyo TX-RZ800 AV Receiver
Panasonic DMP BDT120 Blu Ray Player
Monitor Audio BR6
Monitor Audio BRFX
Monitor Audio BRLCR
BK P12-300SB Subwoofer
Xbox One
Cambridge Audio TOPAZ CD 5 V4
Audioquest FLX-SLiP 14/4

I hope you can help out with this, as I say, overall I am very happy with this receiver, but this is issue is proving frustrating now as I am noticing it more and more when in use.
Another owner has been advised it is down to the DSP mode being used and the chip cutting in and out when a signal is detected....I don't buy this though as I have tried without all forms off DSP on and off and I still get the same issues.

I have the subwoofer hum as well and its only present when signal is being outputted from the receiver. When I switch sound modes or inputs the hum stops during those times so its definitely coming from the receiver not originating in the sub.

I was about to buy, but the rz1100 is coming soon. Not sure what the difference will be ouside of 9.2 vs 7.2. It looks like msrp is $500 more than the 900 (most likely going to shrink in street pricing). Also the 900 is running out of stock for retailers so i am wondering if it is being discontinued for a 910 (the 900 is the only rz that did not get an announcement for a 2016 model yet so it may even just disappear from the lineup, with the rz1100 taking its place). With the above, is it still a good choice (not sure if i want to wait for another frys promo, and i can get it for 1k right now)

I've got an other strange issue with my tx-rz800.
When using airplay the connection drops after 15min. Every time 15min.
Tried 2 different iphone's, ipad's.
The amp is connected with lan cable, no wifi.
I also have a cheap pioneer amp who doesn't have this behavior.
Anyone else who can test if they've got the same issue?

thx

☆Note: Support for DTS:X™, Google Cast™, Tidal™ and FireConnect™ will be enabled on these receivers following firmware updates currently scheduled for summer 2016.

"Currently scheduled" is a bit suspicious also...since this leaves room for slipping. @Perolav could be correct too since the DTS:X releases for Denon were buggy.

With [email protected], this receiver can only has 8-bit color depth

From RZ900 Manual: (static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/116466.pdf)

Resolutions supported by HDMI
■ HDMI IN1 to IN5 (when using in the main room) (PAGE: EN-25)

4K (3840×2160p) 24/25/30 Hz RGB/YCbCr4:4:4 Color Depth: 8/10/12/16 bit
4K (3840×2160p) 50/60 Hz RGB/YCbCr4:4:4 Color Depth: 8bit

With [email protected], this receiver can only has 8-bit color depth
Is this an error? SC-95 and AVR-X4200W both can do 24-bit in [email protected]

Just a quick and interesting update...saw in the Anthem tread that their DTS:X update is scheduled for "sometime this summer." Could it be that D+M prematurely released their upgrade?

I don't have any noticeable subwoofer hum out of my RZ800. There are two sub outputs, have you tried both?

In my experience with sub amplifiers, a bad capacitor can allow the 60hz wall frequency get through to the signal circuitry. Perhaps a capacitor in your receiver is allowing the same thing to happen. Do you have a smart phone with a spectrum analyzer app? If you had access to an oscilloscope, that would be even better. Either method, see if you can pinpoint the hum frequency your hearing. If for example you find a 60hz hum, then see if the sub crossover in the receiver set below 60hz filters it out. This might be useful information for Onkyo support technicians.

You might also try running a ground wire from the receiver's ground terminal to your outlets center screw, since this model doesn't utilize a ground in the power cord.

Can the Dolby Surround Upmixer, be used with the THX Cinema listening mode?
I especially like the way the THX Cinema setting makes everything sound so great.
But, I would hate not to be able to use it, while the DSU is engaged.

All,

Looking for some opinions.

Currently looking to buy a new AVR, (and HDR TV)

Currently can get the RZ800 for $699 delivered.

Unless I'm missing something, this seems like a heck of a good buy, not just for this Onkyo, but in general for a unit in this league.

Also, has anyone run a Dolby Vision signal through this unit successfully?

Has the HDR performance of this unit in general (both HDR10 and/or Dolby Vision) been rewarding?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Advanced Thanks!
