Prefer to just to power the presence speakers.

So I would need 2 amps to do this?

No, rather just a single 2CH amp (see attached link).

]I have recently bought Denon avr-x2200 and placed 2 overhead speakers for atmos experience.
Now I am thinking to place another pair of overhead speakers for 5.1.4 but my receiver can't support it.So I'm considering rx-a2050 which can support this set up instead of Denon avr-x4200 which needs an Ex power amp and I don;t have it.
The question is, am I going to get the same result with yamaha for 4 overhead speakers?
Because my surround speakers are almost at the same line with the listening position but the yami manual seem to place them between front and surround speaker stage.

You'll get just as good or better from Yamaha.

As long as your surrounds and overheads have good off axis response and dispersion you should be fine. Not everyone has ideal rooms and speaker angles. And again Yamaha will do as good of a job making sound bubble if not better and if you go to 3050 you can do 7.1.4 and your surround will be in correct position

Thank you both for your answers.
Unfortunately I can't go for 3050 because of the budget but also I have no space for surround back speakers.
So 2050 with 5.1.4 or 5.2.4 at the future, will be ideal.

The 2 current "overhead" speakers would be configured as Rear Presence = "Overhead" while the 2 additional speakers would be placed forward of these speakers closer to the FL/FR speakers and configured as Front Presence = "Front Height" which is what most of us with our couches near the back wall would use.

A couple weeks after install, I'm in Atmos Heaven, Totally impressed!
We've watched a dozen different Atmos blurays, and a few non-Atmos blurays using the Dolby Surround Upmixer.

Last night was Gravity (Diamond Luxe Edition) in Dolby Atmos 7.4.4 on the 120" screen Amazing!

...sorry for the photo quality, its just from my crappy smartphone
(didn't have time to pull out my good camera)

Mad Max Fury Road is still my all around favorite though, number 1 go to Demo material for Guests!
... close second was "In the Heart of the Sea" for the totally immersive Atmos Audio experience.
Best concert, hands down ...in any format, Roger Waters: The Wall

This morning I'm just chillin' in the man-cave having my Sunday morning coffee,
Dire Straights: Brothers in Arms on SACD , RX-A3050 in Pure Direct Mode
...ahhhh what a way to start the day!

...on deck, Pink Floyd DSOTM on SACD ...life is Good!

..after that I was inspired to hook up my old PS3 , that was retired on Black Friday for a new PS4
But now that I have 3 more HDMI inputs than the RX-V3900...may as well use them!

Pulled up my Floyd collection on the hard drive and found "The Wall" and turned on the PS3 Visualizer in "earth" mode.
I then put the RX-A3050 in 9Ch stereo mode (actually played in 11.4 with the RX-V3900 powering the 4 presence speakers)

sorry for all the pics,
may have gotten a bit carried away

Likely because "internet radio" is far more popular.

We watched Straight Outta Compton last night with the Dolby Surround Upmixer. As the movie begins, there's the sound of a police helicopter circling overhead. Very cool.

(I have to sneak this in...TEN days and counting until DTS:X.)

Adding external amp to RX-A1050

Currently I’m using the RX-A1050 on a 5.1.2 (7.1) speaker configuration. I’m thinking about adding a multi-channel power amp which could give me 7.1.4 (11.1) by connecting the Surround and Surround Back pre-outs of the RX-A1050 to the power amp and run 2 pairs of speakers from it.

I already have a pair of in-ceiling speakers connected to the Front Presence speaker terminals on the RX-A1050. Now that the Surround speaker terminals will be freed-up I plan to use them on a pair of Dolby Atmos add-on modules.

In summary the new configuration would be; the FL & FR, C, SW, FPL & FPR (for Atmos), SL & SR (for Atmos) are connected to the RX-A1050, and the SL & SR and SBL & SBR pre-outs to 4 input channels of the new power amp.

From the above you can see that I’ll be using the Surround pre-outjacks and speaker terminals of the RX-A1050 concurrently, but the owner’s manual says that “When using the pre-out jacks do not connect speakers to the corresponding speaker terminals”. Anyone know what is the implication, will there be no sound coming out from the speakers or worse, damage to the equipment.

Also, any recommendations for the external amp around $700 apart from the Outlaw Audio 5000 which has been getting good reviews.

The A1050 can only process 7CH which means that connecting an external amp will not provide any expansion from the out of the box 5.2.2 configuration, rather simply only providing external amplification to up to 7 speakers. The next model up, A2050 can operate a maximum of a 9CH configuration. The only model that can do 7.2.4 is the "flagship" A3050 that is a 9CH model that can expand to 11CH (7.2.4) using an external 2CH amp.

The warning in the manual is indicating not to connect the pre-outs and the speaker posts to the same speakers. There is no issue connecting them to different speakers.

I'm using an Emotive mini-X a-100 to power the rear presence speakers with my 3050. Works great.

It's there on my 3050. I think it is a connector for the LCD board. It's not noticeable though.

Yes,
you would choose 9Ch+Front in the amp assignment menu

I'm using my old RX-V3900 to power my front and rear presence speakers (Height Channels)
The new RX-A3050 just powers the main 7 bed layer (ear level) speakers, so I selected 7Ch+FP+RP.

Adding an external amp for just the 2 Rear Presence speakers is 9Ch+RP

Disclaimer:
Please note that the last 3 options in AMP Assignment are for the RX-A3050 ONLY to get 7.2.4
... the RX-A1050 and RX-A2050 cannot process 11 channels of audio no matter how many amps you add.

Yup. As noted by the image posted by PioManiac of the A3050 Owner's Manual, you have the option of externally powering the Front, Rear Presence, or Front + Rear Presence in order to expand from 9CH --> 11CH (ie. 7.2.4).

Why use DSU when you can use the incredible Yamaha's DSP Movie (ie :adventure)
With my 3050, i found that Movie DSP are way better than straight or DSU (details, spacialization,etc...)

If you did not get a manual, they are available online on the Yamaha site
go to your specific model, then click the support tab for manuals, guides, and firmware updates

Pages 133-136 in the manual explain Amp Assignments and Speaker Configuration,
then Speaker Layout . You really should set those up before running YPAO. (Auto mode)

as mentioned, For 5.2.4 use the default Basic in amp assignment

If YPAO (auto correction mode) sets your speakers to "Large" and you have a Powered Sub(s)*
go into Manual calibration mode and change all the speakers to "small" ...it does NOT matter what size your speakers actually are!
(The only reason to set the speakers to Large (IMHO) is if they have their own Large Bass driver with built in power amp, or you have no sub!)
set all the crossovers for all speakers in the AVR to 80Hz, do not re-run YPAO.

*Sub volume/gain on the sub should be set just over half way,
frequency range set to full ...then leave all further crossover and sub output level adjustment to be done in the AVR.

I'll only concentrate on the big 3. Here is the comparison link.

They are largely unchanged except for HDCP 2.2,HDR(High Dynamic Range),DTS-X and DTS Neural-X(With a future firmware update).
The 2050 now has 2 dac's instead of 1.
All 3 receivers have DSU(Dolby Surround Upmixer)
I just set up my 3050 and YPAOd it. As usual LCRs and Surrounds showed as large, I set them to small and crossed over at 80hz. Upgraded the firmware to 1.63. Does anyone know what's in this latest edition? Maybe DTSx?

They shipped with fw 1.54 I believe, 1.63 is the most current version,
The new update for DTS:X and HDMI 2.0a (for HDR) is expected next week (Mar.23)

If you load the AV controller app in your smartphone (Apple or Android)
...it will tell you when the update is ready for download and install.

..if you dont have the Yamaha AV Controller App ...GET IT ...So Awesome for wireless/bluetooth control

Awesome PIO. I love my reciever, replaces my 2020. I can now switch all my video at the 3050. I have Directv 4K service, and with the 2020 I had to run the DTV box directly into the TV and coax out of that box to the 2020 for the audio. Now it's all at the 3050.
I have a 5.1.2 system, with Triad bronze in rooms for LCRs, and some free Elan in walls for surrounds, and Elac for the front presence speakers. I sounds fabulous. Do you know if YPAO can detect out of phase speakers? I seem to recall that it did on my 2020. Thanks so much for the quick reply!
