Phono preamps

Looking for advice on choosing a phono preamp.

I have a Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable,
MartinLogan Motion 15 speakers,
all powered by Yamaha RX-A740

receiver which does not have a phono preamp, I couldnt justify paying the additional 300 for the 2040. I know my record player is cheap compared to the rest of my set up but for the occasional use it sounds fine. I'd like not to pay more than $120 for the preamp solely because it would be worth more than my turnable. Also probably could upgrade the needle if the preamp is going to make a noticeable difference in quality.

Have U tried the phono preamp built into the LP60...
Most phono preamps today are done by a single IC..
Unless U spend some bigger $ for an estoteric separate phono preamp, but in this case U will need to upgrade ur cartidge/needle to enjoy the full sonic benefits. Also to use a higher grade needle/cartridge, U will need a better tone arm that can track lighter. If U only play a few vinyls stick with what U have..

Just my $0.02...

There are a number of inexpensive phono preamps available, some good, most bad... A good inexpensive phone preamp is the little Emotiva unit: https://emotiva.com/products/pres-and-pros/xps-1 It is a little over your budget but will probably be on sale before Christmas.
