Dolby Digital from Apple TV to Denon X4200W

Hi,

I have recently purchased the Denon AVR-X4200W receiver with a 5.1 speaker set.

Now I have connected my Apple TV (3) to the receiver over HDMI and want to enjoy surround sound while watching movies or music clips (Vevo). However, the receiver indicates that the sound channel is stereo, instead of some Dolby format. It also shows that the only active speakers are front left and right and the subwoofer. When watching a DVD over HDMI, it indicates Dolby Surround and I hear my surround speakers.

How do I get the Dolby Digital output recognised by my receiver? It is supported anyway? The Denon documentation mentions Dolby TrueHD / Dolby Atmos support, by does not mention Dolby Digital explicitly (I am not an audio expert). I have set the Audio Output settings of my Apple TV to Dolby Digital, and I do have modern HDMI cables. Also, does the Apple TV content support Dolby Digital? I suppose a trailer that says Watch HD does?

Does anybody have a clue?

Thanks in advance!

Dolby Digital is definitely supported by your
Denon as well as the other sound formats.
You may want to check that the Denon
(While playing Apple TV) is set to 'auto'.

Your ATV3 is set correctly.
You connected your ATV3 correctly to the Denon.

Certain media channels on the ATV3 output
Dolby Digital and MOST only support 2 channel.

Examples of Dolby Digital content are:
Any movie purchased from Apple,Netflix,HBO Go,
Showtime Anywhere.

Vevo,YouTube are only 2channel.

On your Denon the are various listening modes
That will 'simulate' surround sound...try them out.

Thank you for your reply.

It was indeed the content that did not support Dolby Digital. Netflix over APTV3 does use the surround speakers.

Apparently, my previous AVR (Harman Kardon) did some magic with the stereo channel of Vevo so that it used the surround speakers as well.

To be more specific, the Denon remote has "Movie" "Music" and "Game" buttons. Press on one of them. It'll show the various sound processing options available for the soundtrack that's currently playing.

You can apply Dolby Surround to Dolby or PCM soundtracks and you can apply DTS Neo:X or Audyssey DSX to any soundtrack.
