Got the new 2017 DTS:X demo disc. Has both a bluray and a UHD 4K disc, and has a lot of good demos. More than a hour of movie clips and music.

A cool feature is the DTS:X Emulator !

It has a single object moving around in all directions, very cool demo

A little different content, as not all DTS:X are on BD's. Pic of backcover in link.

It looks to me like this graphic of the DTS:X 7.1.4 speaker configuration bears a strong resemblance to the [mandatory support] "model" ATSC 3.0 TV 11.1 speaker configuration (also designated 7.1+4), which should be no surprise as DTS:X was an original candidate technology for the future TV standard.

Front Height speaker pair: Azimuth ±45° (±5°)
Rear Height speaker pair: Azimuth ±135° (±5°)
All Front|Rear Height speakers: Elevation +35° (±10°)

Source: Call for Proposals: ATSC 3.0 Audio System (link)

Dolby's next generation immersive audio codec, AC-4, was one of the two winning candidates, so we might expect future AVRs equipped with a combination Dolby AC-4|Atmos decoder (plus DSU) to support this speaker configuration too.

And that are exactly the intended localions the Trinnov Altitude processor uses for the lay-out named 'DTS:X 7.1.4 Heights'

A good idea and understanding lies at the base of every successful project.

Yup, those speakers are 45 up and 45 out (45 degrees elevation and 45 degrees from centre line). Easy to remember.

Would be interesting to hear that demo on something greater than a 7.1.4 system.

I mean....for science, ya know.

Maybe I missed this part of the discussion, but wouldn't the emulator restricted to the specific 7.x.4 speakers used in a DTS:X configuration, with DTS:X processing? Otherwise I'd love to compare what you'd get for 7.x.4 to 9.x.4 or even 11.x.4 or 6 on my system but that's probably a bridge too far.

Audio Gear: Trinnov Altitude 32 (24 channel), NAD M27 amps (3)
Video: JVC RS600, Seymour 100" UF Screen, Lumagen Radiance Pro 4444 (coming soon)
Speakers: PSB Imagine T3 LCR, Imagine T Wides/Side Surround 1, T2 Side Surrounds, Imagine XB rears, Image B6 screens, PSB CS1000 ceilings (6), HSU ULS-15 Mk 2 subs (4) - 13.4.6
HAA HT1 and HT2 Certification

It's an object that floats around in a full 3D space as seen in the video.

The 7.x.4 layout is only there for visual demonstrative purposes.

Don't read my comment as that it can be done right now. AFAIK, DTS:X is still limited to 12ch playback even on your Trinnov as of today. But it is still an object-based format an capable of things that Atmos is when it wants to. This is a good example of that.

For now, yes. In the future, as & when DTS has more outputs, it depends: was the music in that track truly encoded as an audio object or was it emulating an object by panning the music though 7.1.4 channels? Quick, someone with a Yamaha press the info button.

Audiosphere on the last couple Dolby demo discs is similar, to the extent that a bouncing ball on-screen coincides with where the sound should be in your set-up. http://www.demo-world.eu/download-2d...udiosphere.jpg

And it very well might be. Remember that DTS:X was introduced as an object-based format and we all know how many were on the first half-dozen titles on BD. Not a big deal either way.

You mean if it truly is a object, it will work correctly when DTS:X "opens up" in the future, while if is is just panning channels, it will leave those "opened up" speakers silent and still just play 7.1.4?

Yes. Had it been actual object encoded it would expand on future >7.1.4 systems.

Looks like it isn't an object in the signal and it will remain 7.l.4 unless further processed somehow.

Ugh.

I need to go double check this disc and my recently-updated pre/pro.

I know 7.1.4 is working (i can hear it) but that pic above (just noticed) shows an 'output' of 5.1.2....brb.

Yeah, must be some bug introduced in one of Yamaha's last updates.

Did the 7.1.4 callout and it worked as normal but that GUI shows the wrong output.

Not sure if that affects the object readout for DTS:X or not so Im going to go fish for a disc that I know has an object to confirm.

Confirmed. My other DTS:X demo disk has a clip that still shows it has one object. Also, a song with one object.

This new DTS:X demo disk with the 'emulator' has no objects, unfortunately.

Even with channel-based DTS:X soundtracks, I don't think additional speakers will be silent. On last year's AVRs, DTS:X decoding used Neural to extract Wides when playing back 7.1.4 soundtracks on a 9.1.2 layout. As speaker counts grow, there's no reason it can't do the same extraction for Top Middles when playing 7.1.4 soundtracks on 7.1.6 or 9.1.6 layouts.

Sounds that are common to the L/R Front Height channels can feed a Centre Front Height speaker; sounds that are common to all 4 height channels can feed VOG speaker(s). After all, that's where those common sounds would have phantom imaged anyway. The intent of the mix remains intact. Which is why I said it wasn't a big deal either way.
