McIntosh MX122 A/V Processor

My local dealer is suppose to have these in a few weeks. Any thoughts on this unit? I know the big brother MX160 has a lot of great features but the MX122 seems to be fully loaded including HDCP 2.2, HDR, 4K at 50/60Hz,4:4:4 color, and more....

I'm excited about it and looking forward to trying it vs. my AV8802.

According to my feedback from Mcintosh it is based on the Marantz platform, but with their own DAC, audio, power supply, etc. Boards all built in Binghamton. I'm hoping the audio is therefore improved. They do firmware updates via Internet. Seems to have all the latest features needed including full HDR and 4k at 60hz support. The HDMI chip set must be 18 gbps. SJ

Yeah, on paper it all looks great. I'm hoping there is an improvement in stereo performance, otherwise not really an upgrade for me.

Anyone pre-order one of these yet? My dealer told me he already has 6 on pre-order to be delivered in a few weeks. I'm looking seriously at this unit. SJ

Interesting-thanks as I had not heard about this one..

Trying to decide in near future if I should try to sell my Classe SSP-800 while I might still recoup some of the original cash laid-out. It will be harder as more and more updated units hit the market but dang it is an awesome unit stereo and all.

Perhaps a Marantz pre-pro and dedicated pre-amp will be on tap this time. Makes the cost of pre-pro easier to swallow when upgrade time comes.

Who knows but thanks for the info..

Rick

I went ahead and pre-ordered a MX122 from my local dealer. They are going to setup a demo of the MX122 and MX160 once they receive the MX122s next week. I really want to hear these side-by-side. SJ

If you intend to use the room correction then it will likely be no contest between the Audyssey and the Room Perfect.

You may be right, but that's what folks thought about the differences between the MX121 and previous Marantz models. I read through that entire thread and many thought the MX121 was better especially on the audio side of things... Probably individual preference, but the guts according to McIntosh are different. My dealer does not carry Marantz or I would have them line that one up also! I do think the room correction aspect (as mentioned above) is going to be a major difference. My current AVP has Audyssey XT32 which is the same as the MX122. The MX160 has RoomPerfect which I believe is a Lyndgdorf developed product. Although I have never heard it, based upon what others have stated as well as the cost of this one component (2 channel RP goes for $4,500) it must be pretty good. We shall see. SJ

This is made in the USA so no doubt there are different components. McIntosh makes really nice analogue gear and makes sense for them to use Marantz processing because it would be very costly for them to do their own in house. Still would love to hear impressions of the McIntosh and Marantz side by side. Will be hard to find a dealer that carries both but the best buy by me may actually be a option though not so sure how good their listening room is... Was surprised to see them carrying the big McIntosh Mono blocks and tube gear there and I know they also carry Marantz.

I'm interested in your thoughts regarding the MX122. I am trying to determine if i want to get the MX122 or the Anthem AV60. I am waiting for both formal and AVS reviews. There is a big difference in cost between the two but i need to determine if the difference in price of the MX122 is worth it.

You should look at the Marantz 8802a also as it is more in line price wise with the Anthem. Still a bit more expensive but has a few things the Anthem doesn't as does the MX122. I would like to hear a MX122 and Marantz 8802a for music. Will be interesting to hear peoples impressions of the McIntosh.

Positive. Sounds like a Mc--smooth with a touch of warmth/fullness. Currently have the AV8802 and previous was a Meridian G68.

Yes, compared the two a good portion of the day yesterday. Overall I like the unit. With my system and speakers I would pick the Mc as the winner sound-wise between the two, but it was very close. As I said above, the Mc has a slightly warmer tone to it that made the stereo listening on some tracks more enjoyable. Of course I didn't do anything level matched, nor did I blindfold myself and use an A/B switch.

I did play some CDs, digital files, blu-ray and recorded TV and with the music went back and forth a few times with different tracks.

The menu system/video seems to be identical to the Marantz although Auro3d is already active in the unit. Also, you get a full high quality metal microphone stand along with the Audyssey mic.

I don't like the sound of Audyssey in my system so all my listening was straight (and I used all the same settings as the Marantz--crossovers, levels, distances, etc.)

The McIntosh has less ventilation on the top and runs much cooler than the Marantz does--I find the Marantz runs particularly hot for a preamp.

I like the front display much better on the McIntosh, but of course, this is personal. I can't really see the Marantz display from any distance and the open front door doesn't look great to me--and the source info is duplicated. The button cluster underneath the door is basically duplicated on the Mc with larger buttons and I like being able to see the speaker output indicators.

Nice work thx!

I have an older mcintosh mx 135 and love the sound and looks with my focal utopia be speakers, unfortunately it's dated and I need to move to something with the latest formats.

Thx again, Bob

I can't really see the Marantz display from any distance and the open front door doesn't look great to me--and the source info is duplicated. The button cluster underneath the door is basically duplicated on the Mc with larger buttons and I like being able to see the speaker output indicators.

B.
