If it was a UL/CSA temperature thing, they'd just use that to prevent things from getting too hot (oh wait, they already do!). They wouldn't add the expense of relays and transformer taps.

I've got some power resistors on order (from China, so a few weeks). I'll load up an AVR and get some pictures off the scope.

OK cool, that’s what I’ve been doing.

Exclamation AVR-S720W - Stuck in nightmare firmware "Update Retry" loop

AVR-S720W - Stuck in nightmare firmware "Update Retry" loop

Hi guys, since I tried updating to firmware 9-1-2017 for my AVR-S720W, my AVR is stuck in a "Update Retry" loop.
I tried soft reset, hard reset, forcing USB update, etc. So my last hope is to be able to revert it back to a older version of the software.

So I'm looking for the 3-3-2017 and 9-16-2016 firmware update files. Anyone?

Thanks!

Try doing a "Network reset" as noted in post 5 of this thread.

Thank you for your interest. The command did not work.
I tried all type of resets, none of them have any effect.

Did not work how? Did the AVR reset when you did the "Network reset" or simply nothing happened?

Nothing happended. When AC is plugged, the AVR automatically enter in the "Update Retry" loop and eventually fail.
The first step of the reset procedure is to have the unit turned "off", but the power button has no effect, unless you hold it for a few seconds, it will reset (on -> off -> on) the unit.

When I hold the "TUNER PRESET CH+" and "TUNE -" simultaneously, and pressing the power button does nothing.
When I hold the "TUNER PRESET CH+" and "TUNE -" simultaneously, and holding the power button does reset (on -> off -> on) the unit, but then back to same.

The only "mode" I can get it into is the Forced USB All Device Write Mode (as defined in the service manual), the famous "USB AllUpdate...".
When this mode is activated, the CPU tries to update the firmware from the USB key, but always fail. Ending with a "Update Error0116" (defined as "CPU - Setup failure of the XModem transfer method" in the service manual).

It once got to 3% before failing. I can see that the CPU is reading the USB content because the USB status light is flashing.

That is why I'm looking at older firmware files to try with.

Just ordered a 6300. This will be my first Denon receiver (I'm a Yamaha fan) and I'm hoping I don't get bit by the speaker buzz problem. Can't wait to hear Atmos in my living room!

Video and sound mode questions

I have had my AVR setup for a little over a month and feel I have things pretty solid but want to work on the tweaks. I have a handful of questions at this point and but have been doing my research- I have backtracked and read through A LOT of this forum and others similar (Sony 900E, Dobly Atmos, Xbox X, etc..). I have thoroughly read through my Denon X4300H manual a couple times over now as well as their various tips/ troubleshooting online. Now I'll ask the forums..

Video Mode:
I have created quick select for gaming (game mode) vs. content watching (movie mode). I cannot find anything substantial for what the 2 modes actually do besides 'less processing'.
1) What processing is actually taking place? Wouldn't i just want the video passed right through and have my tv handle the raw signal?
2) Why would i use video mode over game mode for movies, whats the benefit? If game mode has less processing, why not just leave it on?
3) If i do choose auto, does it detect if xbox is viewing content vs. game? I cant find where it actually states the mode during play

Sound modes:
1) It appears when it's an Atmos soundtrack, the AVR just takes over and runs Atmos, true?
2) I understand its a preference, but is there a general consensus on what is a better upmixer/ soundmode for movies, gaming, ARC ex.- Dolby Surround vs. DTS:X vs. DTS Neural:X (the sound modes and channel output diagram didnt help me much)
An example might be- I have a 7.1, but for COD WW2 on the xbox X (bitstream, 4k) doesnt utilize the rears

4) A big question i have is- Why is direct/ pure direct not the best default? or when would be the best time to use them (gaming, Atmos soundtracks, etc)?

5) Eco-any reason not to use Auto?

6) Since i currently do not have a Center Channel, is there any additional tweaks that would help with tv/ movie dialog?

Here is my setup:
Denon X4300H
Sony 65 XBR900E
Xbox X (for gaming, blu-ray, and streaming)

Speaker setup (currently 6.1.2)
Klipsch R-26 towers
(no center)
Bose 161 for surrounds
Klipsch R-15M as rear surrounds
Monoprice Caliber Series 8" ceiling speakers (x2)
Klipsch R-10SW Subwoofer (10") (x1)

Thanks a ton in advanced

Per the Video mode, I'm running the Xbox X in 4K/ 10bit 4:4:4/ HDR mode. Hence the request to just send the video signal right to the 4K TV to handle the video content.

I have some DSD audio + Plex questions! I downloaded some sample files from Oppo:

https://www.oppodigital.com/hra/dsd-by-davidelias.aspx

Particularly the .dsf DSD64 files are giving me trouble. I have them loaded into my Plex server, I can see them and play them in my Plex client. Certainly when I play them on my phone Plex is transcoding.

I was hoping when going to online music on my Denon X6300 I would be able to play the DSD files directly. I browsed to my Plex server and discovered that the Denon does not even list the DSD files for playing!

I put the files on a USB stick, plugged it in, and I could play them. While the front panel did not indicate DSD, the Denon info screen did confirm that the file was coming over in DSD.
  1. I believe the Denon is supposed to support network streamed DSD files, so what am I doing wrong?
  2. Is there an easier way than browsing the online music screens to stream music from a Plex server.

Thanks!

That would be for a refresh rate of 4K24/25/30 only, of course.

If you mean 4K60, there simply is no 4K60 10bit 4:4:4 mode because that exceeds the 18Gbps maximum bandwidth of the HDMI2 specs. Such a mode, if it existed, would require a whopping 22Gbps of bandwidth.

As things stand, 4K60 8bit 4:4:4 maxes out HDMI2, using 17.8Gbps (and causes many issues with cables which aren't up to the specs they claim to be)

The best compromise is the 4K60 12bit 4:2:2 mode, which also needs 17.8Gbps. (HDMI2 does not support 4K60 10bit 4:2:2, but that's no problem, most devices send 10bit content in that 12bit container. This is what the PS4Pro does for 4K60 HDR gaming.)

See the 4K modes link in my sig. HTH.

I'm having some problem with my 2300 and my PC. Everytime my AVR is on and I'm using my main monitor (connected via display port to my gtx1080) I get random disconnect/connect windows sound and if I'm in fullscreen mode (let's say a game) the monitor get's black until I alt-tab. The problem doesn't happen when my avr is off or when is on and I'm using the TV connected to it. Seems like a fast disconnection of the receiver even if I'm not using it, is it possible ?

The wireless antenna on my 3300W broke off, It's the one on the right rear of the unit. Anyone know if it's easily replaceable? Can I buy the part? I've contacted Denon twice and they've so far ignored me.

I have a quick audyssey question. When you run the setup do you have to choose the same 8 listening positions as they do in the pictures or can you chooses your own to line up with your seating positions?

There are dozens and dozens of compatible antennas on ebay. Here's one where they are two for $5 with free shipping:

Can't find a thread for 2017 models but presumably they are virtually the same
I have the X4400
Does activating the Video Conversion setting have a negative effect on the picture quality?
Problem is the OSD is only visible if the setting is on

Opinions seem to vary.

You can test for yourself by pushing a source like a good UHD DVD through the 4400 with conversion on. Then again with conversion off, or just feeding the player straight into the TV.

If you don't see a difference, leave conversion on.

Don't have a 3300, so couldn't actually check that. The pictures available online were unclear.

The 4300 (which I have) does have ones that unthread, as do all the AVRs I've ever owned, both Denon and Yamaha, that have wi-fi.

If you grasp the antenna collar (the widest part closest to the receiver body) and turn it counterclockwise, it doesn't unscrew?

If they don't unthread, how were you going to replace them?

You actually don't set the mic where others sit rather you only focus on where YOU sit. That is the first mic position. the remaining 5-7 mic positions are placed no more than 1-2' radius around that 1st mic position.

As noted in their respective Owner's manuals, the X3300W and lower models don't feature easily removeable antennas as do the X4300H and X6300H.

Well, here's a shot of the stump I'm left with. It turns freely left and right as it would to be able to position the antenna, but it stops solidly in either direction. It doesn't seem to want to unthread unless I'm not twisting it hard enough? To answer your question, I was hoping that by purchasing a direct replacement that the method of removal would be more clear.

The problem doesn't happen when my avr is off or when is on and I'm using the TV connected to it. Seems like a fast disconnection of the receiver even if I'm not using it, is it possible ?
The PC must be passing a standard TV resolution (eg. 1080p).

According to the post by jdsmoothie (resident Denon expert guy who wrote the really nice FAQs at the beginning of this topic), the 3300's antennas don't just twist off the way they do on my 4300.

I'm out of ideas at this point. Seems to me you'd have to take the cover off the 3300 and maybe do some soldering if you were to get a replacement antenna from Denon...

Ok thanks. Also how can I eliminate issues with lip sync from my cable box. And also how can I make it so my cable remote doesn’t control my tv and receiver anymore?

Thanks

Precisely what I was afraid of. I've contacted the dealer I bought it from on Amazon to see if they can help. It was a refurb through IQ Home Entertainment that I bought back in October, so who knows. Maybe it will be a warranty thing...
