It's absolutely amazing as long as you have a surround setup you can capture. The preloaded rooms didn't sound that convincing, but once I captured a real setup using the in ear microphones its been a whole new experience. It sounds almost identical in sound and surround separation as the room that the speakers I captured.

So I was a preorder backer, but the reason I got my unit as quick as I did was that they had some units for sale to retail customers and I paid the difference between my preorder and the retail price. I figured I'd be another year+ until I got my preorder based on them saying that they're only shipping 20 units a week at most (so far it seems like they've struggled to hit 10 a week). I know that the first few Kickstarter backers have had units that have shipped and that they were contacted by the Smyths to confirm a shipping address at least.

If you pay full retail price, they'll ship next day. Other than that it seems like they are going in order starting with Kickstarter backers. Over on Head-Fi there is a big discussion about it and it seems like maybe the first 9 or so backers have been contacted to confirm shipping addresses and have been told their units would be shipping this week.

Well that sucks somewhat. Kickstarters that end up with the product on store shelves before backers get them generally suck.

The only benefit is the massive discount in this case, since I think the price has more than doubled since then. So I guess I can't complain too loudly. That and the fact the specs have improved since the initial conception.

Very interested in this tech, but it's disappointing that it's only really good at duplicating your existing setup. A big part of rationalizing the expense is to be able to have a full surround experience without having to invest in all that equipment. Seems like so far the major selling point is to be able to listen to your own system without bothering others. Good, but limited. The appeal of being able to virtually sit in some other room with different types of speakers is huge. Without knowing the math and processing involved it sure seems like they could take others measurement files and plug in your ear specs to merge them into a more realistic result. I'll be watching for that evolution.

You can use the site to share/buy other recorded setups. At some point.

Yes, and according to the comment by this owner the ones included aren't very convincing. I saw an interview with the designer and he also indicated using the other profiles aren't as good. For me the value is greatly diminished if you can only get very good performance when it's just duplicating your own system and room. I'm certainly hopeful, but definitely in wait and see mode for now.

So I should clarify a few things. First there is a procedure outlined here:
that does wonders for making the included default speakers sound way more convincing as a surround setup. So much so that I've been using a default Atmos room on the A16. Second, once the Realiser Exchange website is opened up you will be able to pay to have any speaker setup that is uploaded customized to your ears. Last, rooms from people that have units such as myself can be shared for free and then you can use the procedure I linked to above to help with the specialization of said room, there are tons of rooms out there right now for free to try.

Also you don't necessarily need to invest in a setup yourself to capture a personalized room. If you have friends/family that have a surround setup or a local home audio/video store that has demo rooms you could go that route to capture something.

Thanks for the clarification. That's better than the previous comment I quoted. As far as capturing my setup, or one nearby, doesn't really help me personally, but some could certainly benefit. Whether paying to customize other offerings is worth it depends on the cost and how good the results are. It's encouraging that you're using a preset you tweaked, but in the end whether that represents value for money depends on how good it sounds to me. It's very interesting tech, just too many question marks for me to roll $4000 dice today, but I'll definitely continue monitoring.

Up to you. They're the same internally, so it's just whether you want to put it on top and have it hold your headphones, or stack it with other equipment.

This is strictly a personal choice and depends on your tastes and preferences.

What formats does it currently support out of Atmos , DtS-X & Auro3D?

Out of the box it's certified for Atmos. Certification is underway for dtsX and Auro 3d and will be added via firmware update. As Atmos is the most used format this ensures most content is ready to play. This will be followed by dtsX and Auro 3d will be last. The only way it can change is if Auro certification happens far quicker than dtsX and requires practically no work as all the effort is on dtsX.

I'm getting the 2u unit so it stacks. The head one is good for those who can put it ina spot of glory where it will hold your headphones too.

It is personal preference which you choose since they are identical inside.

I opted for headphone stand version initially then I realized if I used it for gaming, it would block my display.

So I went for the 2U

Yeah, my unit has t shipped yet but I got notification that I'd be getting the new unit.

For those not knowing, the A16 will have a hardware revision as the parts are obsoleted - the HDMI chip is upgraded as is the audio processor. The biggest update to the HDMI is eARC support where it will appear as another HDMI input.

The new audio processor will enable up to 24 channels of processing, so many new combinations of Atmos are possible. Note that using 24 channels will disable the second headphone output and the 16 channel outputs. Auro 3d and DTS:X stay the same as their decoders haven't been updated. The new chip can support Dirac as well, if Smyth decides to license it.

They are also considering a return to factory upgrade program so existing owners can get upgrades of either HDMI alone or HDMI and audio processor.
