I don't know if the dac really makes that much of a difference. Pioneer and Yamaha have the same dac and the Yamaha was clearly brighter.

The same dac doesn't mean two will sound the same. But different dac (from different family) probably does. Requires different analog component design.

Regardless of how neutral and transparent it is the component (other than dsp) that colors the sound. In fact the sabre has different modes you can set (slow rolloff, short latency, etc).

I agree Yamaha and Pioneer have different sound while sharing the same dac chip. But I bet the circuit design is different including the parts surrounding the dac.

The only time I'd call Yamaha bright is if you run ypao and leave the eq at the default setting. Yamaha addresses (mostly unnecessarily) top end rolloff in rooms which will sound bright in many cases.

So...

Yamaha has a brighter sound than Pioneer Elite.

And Pioneer Elite has a brighter sound than Onkyo?

Looking at the Australian Pioneer website, there seems no 801?

So, Pioneer is the "least bright" of all of them... ?

Don't know about the Yamaha.

But it's no big deal it's less bright because you can eq it to your likings. I found the Onkyo sometimes too bright.
With Audyssey on you couldn't eq it to your likings. With AccuEQ you can.

The bass and bass kick is much much better on the Pioneer compared to Onkyo.

BTW I have a sc-lx89 / sc99

These have been out for a little while now yet all the action is on the onkyo 1100/3100 thread and the older pioneer sc-9x thread. why the no love for the new Pio's? Is there something wrong with them that I missed?

Picked up an LX701 off of Amazon to replace an SC-37 that I've had for 5 or so years. So far I'm impressed with the sound. Not impressed with the remote, real cheap but at least it really isn't needed as their iPad app is pretty damn good.

AFter reading the super long pdf of the differences between the sc 501, 701,801, and 901 It makes the most sence to go with the 701. Best buy has them for 300 off in the magnolia section. Now only need to get my svs sub and Def tech bookshelves

Anyone have any further insight into these units (701/801)?

I've been looking to replace an aging Denon which seems to be on the way out (front channels cut out unexpectedly, reset unit, repeat again in a few days/weeks). Normally I would just go straight back to another Denon, but I am also looking for a unit that can potentially handle 4 ohm speakers, and Pioneer seems to be about the only one in this price range that "officially" supports such a configuration w/o separate amps.

I found one review (German website) for the LX801 which was fairly informative (only place I could find showing off new OSD), but as it stands right now there seems to be very little information out there about these. I am also curious about the real differences between 701 vs the 801... as Mentaltilt noted, the pdf/comparison tool basically makes these out to be the same, minus AIR "certification" and slightly more power, but I find it odd the specifications show a 6 lbs different between the two while retaining the same dimensions.

Thanks, not bad. A BB in area has an open box 701 for 13xx. I wanted more off, no budge. The 801 has as slight power bump is that all? Has to be more since retail is 2k

I think I read somewhere that the 801 and 901 have discrete amp circuits while the 701 has integrated.

I just ordered the SC-LX901 on Amazon. Has not shipped yet. When I get it all hooked up and run some demo material I will post a first impression summary. I currently have an Onkyo TX-NR5010. My set up is now 11.2 and I am going to try to make this setup work. Initially I will only have FH's.

I forget what I paid. Wanted to get away from Audyssey EQ for a change and try something different. This will be my 1st Pioneer Elite. May take me a week or so to get it up and running. So first impression post will be a little while.

Is there an Official Pioneer Elite SC-LX701/801/901 Thread?

I received the unit yesterday. Unpacked it and started to read the Manual and get more familiar with the unit and its capabilities. I should have noticed this before but I did not. It seems Pioneer has dropped support for any type of Wide speaker placement. There is no way to set a wide speaker unless celling mounted. This is a deal breaker for me. I don't have any celling mounted speaker except my front heights. There is no way for me to add this at the current time so I need the unit to support Wide channels.

Its going back and I bought a Denon 7200AW as a replacement. The Denon seems to be much more flexible with Speaker layout. The Pioneer was just to limited in this regard. I never powered the unit up. So I have Zero input about operation or sound. Sorry guys.

Good luck to those that stay with this unit. In all other respects it seemed to be very well built. Good looking. The Owners Manual leaves a lot to be desired. Disappointed as I wanted to like this unit.

Not to be argumentative here. But the Owners Manual (Pages 25, 33, 39, 45, 51, 52, and so on) Indicate otherwise and show the use of Front Wide Left and Front Wide Right channel configuration and set up are still very much possible and supported.

Correct me if I am wrong please.

The 7200 is last year's 2015 model.

D&M are on a 2 year refresh cycle on their flagship receiver and processor.

They will not have the same features as the 2016 models and we do not expect a refresh until the end of 2017.

I have the SC-LX701 and am very happy with it. Needed the 5 HDMI 2.2 inputs. It has the Onkyo's OSD now and offers more info than previous Pioneer receivers. I don't like that they eliminated the upscaling choices to where you could pick 1080i, 1080p, 4k 24hz, 4k 60hz, pure, or pass through. I think those are the resolutions? It was called video parameters on the remote. Now the only choice is auto or off. Better menus with better graphics and to me it sounds a little better than my SC-95 it replaced. But I'm definitely no audiophile. The other issue is when watching Directv in between changing channels or from shows to commercials there is a clicking sound. Sometimes it includes a very fast hesitation in the sound. I have smart sound on, so maybe that's causing it or when it changes sound fields? Not sure if a defect or normal? Just my two cents worth so far on the receiver. Over all though, good purchase for sure.
