Air Studios certified Pioneer AVR?

I got the Pioneer SC-LX701 last week
It sounds good... but something's missing
My old Pioneer was a THX model with Air Studios tuning and it simply sounded better than the LX701, especially with music in movies
Unfortunately I have sold it
The bigger model LX801 has the Air Studios tuning
Has anyone upgraded from the LX701 to the LX801?

I need to act fast if I want to upgrade
But there is no point in doing it if there is not much of a difference
I would love to hear your experiences
Thanks

I have never purchased any equipment from Accessories 4 less but I am considering buying the Sc-LX801/901 from them. Over the past week I have researched the company and have read many positive reviews on the web. There was one negative comment on another forum referencing buying a refurbished Marantz amp and pre-amp. The poster stated both units stop working a short time after he received them. He did say that both items were replaced.

The only thing I do not like there is a 5% re-stocking fee for returned refurbished items.

I went to Magnolia (Best Buy) this past weekend and me and the wife listened to both the LX701 and LX901. They did not have a LX801 and it appears that none of the Magnolia's in my area have one on display and can be ordered only. I am contemplating the LX701 but after reading this forum there are those that have stated the LX801 sounds better then the LX701.

We were at a design center Magnolia were they have McIntosh and Arcam components. We only listened to the LX901 and LX701 playing music and the speakers where B&W 804 D3's. An OPPO UDP-205 was the source used to play the music. To mine and my wife's ears the LX901 sounded less harsh then the LX701. The settings on both units where identical and we both did know which unit was playing since we did not want to assume the LX901 was the better receiver because of the increased cost and the differences between both units (which I cannot remember presently). We also listened to both receivers with a pair of B&W 702 S2' as the speakers. Again we both thought the LX901 was smoother and less harsh sounding receiver.

My wife of 31 years is very frugal and she said she preferred the sound of the LX901 over the LX701. I am upgrading from a Onkyo TX-NR5007.

The amps are different between the 2. even though they are both "D3" the 701 ( along with the 501 ) use IC amps where as the 801 and 901 use discreet component amps.

Hi all. I had posted a few weeks ago about making sure you've got good speakers to match your AVR and had switched my mids out with some success. However, I just want to note after hours and hours of trying to find the sweet spot, I was stumped, but figured I'd try one more thing. My listening distance is about 14 feet and the my 801 was set to that, but I played around and settled at about 8.5 feet and the sound really came back alive and normalized. Maybe they have these AVRs overcompensating, as my previous pio did not have this issue. I really don't care though. It works and that is what matters. I hope this helps someone.

It really is a joke, particularly considering the money - and time - we have invested. But when it works ...
Ok, thank you for this information Larry. I am coming from a older Samsung / Pioneer and I really had hoped this problem went away with a Harmony. I always expected it was the Pioneer (which I've bought Elites since the mid-90s).

Now I have:
LG 4k
LX801
Apple 4k TV
Directv
Harmony hub/remote

Between the Directv & Apple 4k TV the Pioneer seems to have a CEC seizure. So I have had (once again) to completely disable CEC on the Pioneer (which means losing ARC) and use Digital Optical from the LG to the Pioneer. While I see your logic of running Directv/Apple 4k TV to the LG 4k, I just do not want to run multiple HDMI cables up to my TV

I think when I need to get a HDMI 2.1 receiver I'll part ways from Pioneer.

Dislikes on the LX801 over my replaced Pioneer:

1. The panel does not auto-dimm. Having it on the lowest setting is to dim during the day and two bright at night.
2. Seems to have a zillion blue lights. This along with the non-auto dimmer is distracting at night time.
3. Does not handle my Wii's progressive seems like the 801 only handles interlaced on component, so now I have to get a HDMI converter (luckily I got a Amazon flash sale).

Did you try to turn off the front display at night.

Will only light up with a signal change or if you use the remote.

Small piece of black electrical tape or window tint. Problem solved............

If you search the forum or amazon. They sell a die cut tint for just this concern.

actually, turning it off just turns it off - does not pop on when you change vol or surround changes

My SC1222 and SC97 both have the front displays turned off. They both light up the front display for a couple seconds. Then turn off again. When there is an input change. I thought it did it when the volume was changed.

I don’t use the remote at all or the front display. I control both AVR’s with the Pioneer AV5 app. I usually [email protected]@k at the AV5 app when making changes.

You still have the on screen dispay on your TV that provides the current status, correct?.

I can hit info / and volume overlay is enabled on the TV but that does not work on the LG Smart TV apps. No Amazon still on Apple 4k and no Dolby Vision passthrough on LX801 (so I use Amazon/Netflix apps on LG). If I had a dollar for everything coming 'later' this year I'd be rich ;-)

Purchased a open box SC-LX901 for 30% off of MSRP at Best Buy last night. Looks brand new and replaced the Onkyo TX-NR5007 with the 901. Did the complete setup to include MCACC Pro tuning. The wife and I are happy but we noticed the two front speakers (Mirage OM-5's with powered sub-woofer) are producing more bass then what we are accustomed to when the Onkyo 5007 was installed in the system and calibrated with Audyssey. While watching a recorded show of Blue Bloods last night the bass is boomy to the point is detracting from the overall show. I went into the options of the 901 and the bass and treble are both at zero. It was getting late last night and I will continue to research after I complete my honey do list from the wife today. I am thinking I have to adjust the tuning portion of the MACC Pro but I am not sure. I want to reduce the bass from the powered sub-woofer from the two front speakers only. Never had this problem with the Onkyo 5007 since being installed in 2010. Any help is appreciated.

If you want to reduce the bass in the 2 fronts, set them to small. However, this will send more bass to the sub. You'll have to reduce the volume on the powered sub.

Thanks for the input. The front speakers (Mirage OM-5's) have internal powered subs and I do not have a stand alone sub in my system. I reread my post and I can see how I wrote it that it sounds like I have a powered sub that is separate from the front speakers. I have been playing with decibel switch on the front speakers that controls the subs in the front speakers. It was set at 0 and I have decreased it to -6db (max setting for decreasing volume on the speaker) and it has helped.

Firmware Update today

Looks like they added a firmware update today. Turned on my 801 this morning and the message was scrolling across "Update hit enter to continue" Tried that 3 times and it errors out every time. Error 216 then error 84. It will not let you access the menu when you turn it on. Each time you turn it on that Update message is scrolling. I guess it's time to call their useless customer service and see whats going on.

FYI this link is for the 801!!!
Go here to get the download, http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...X801#downloads

Suggest you follow the Adv Manual.

I had to use the receiver's panel to get into the menu to the get to the USB update option (it would not respond to the remote). If I recall correctly I restarted the receiver with my USB stick in the front USB port. I also insured the only thing on my USB stick was the firmware update files (the files were in the root - no folder structure).

If your receiver is seeing the USB Stick, you should be able to update from the Menu's USB option. I gave up trying to get it to work from the front panel update messaging.

I also just noticed the release notes do not list this version (2089-3000-3030-0008) - so its a mystery update.

Dolby Vision comes in December...http://www.pioneer-audiovisual.eu/eu...rd-home-cinema

regarding the stupid DIMMER option, I wrote several complaints to the Pioneer EU headquarters (along with the damn input name on display, instead of audio signal as ever before), sadly to no avail yet...Pio seems to have stepped way down in regard of customer service since they f***ed with Onkyo...
I myself use the SC-LX501 and the unit sounds surprisingly good for being the poorest member of the family

Thx for that link.

well at least I am not the only one that is disliking the change (I forgot to list the input name too). I just do not get dropping it but it's clearly a 1st world issue ;-) Heck, I even miss the audio knob moving has you turn up/down the volume from my mid-90's Elite LOL!

I have personally compared the 701, 801 and 901. You are correct, the 901 is far superior to the 701, no contest. If you can afford it, get the 901. Regarding the 801 vs the 901, the difference is more subtle. The difference between the 801 and the 901 is the noise floor on the 901 is lower. Everything is a bit cleaner and there is less "grain" to the sound. It's subtle, but if you A/B compare the 801 and the 901 it's definitely audible (my wife could tell the difference). It depends on the speaker system you'll be using whether you'll notice the difference and it's not a huge difference, maybe 5% better.

Firmware Update Continued

Thanks to Richard I am back up and running. If you get the update scrolling across the screen the remote does not respond except to hit enter and start the update. Hit "HOME" on the front panel and it will take you to the system setup screen. Go to the Firmware update and the first thing I did was disable the automatic notification so I don't go through this again. My update failed at least 5 times including once with the USB with different error messages but this is where it gets interesting. My Firmware indicates I am now running the newest version.

This update is only for 901!

I have the 901 and got the same message about the update everyone else has. I tried updating over the NET but it didn't work x3 (even after I plugged in an ethernet cable). I downloaded the firmware update from the website below (please realize it is specific to the 901, the 801 and 701 have different updates). Please note, you have to unzip the download to the USB before it will work, if it's still zipped, you'll get an error code). I plugged the USB into the receiver while it was off, when I turned the receiver on from the remote the usb lit up. I didn't have to unplug the receiver or reset it or anything. When the update flashes across the receiver screen hit enter, the update will default to NET (internet) but if you hit the up/down arrow it will switch to USB. Hit enter.

AGAIN, THIS WEBSITE IS FOR THE 901 ONLY, THE 701 AND 801 HAVE A DIFFERENT UPDATE FROM A DIFFERENT WEBSITE:

For the 801 and 701:

Also, I didn't have my 801 connected to my network and it wouldn't even give me the option of the update until I connected the 801 to the network and it checked and verified there was an update available. I don't think you can force an update even if you have it on a USB.

Pioneer Elite SC-LX901 Receiver, Magnepan MG2.5/R x4 and CC3 center channel speakers with Sound Anchor stands, Power Sound Audio S3000i subwoofer, Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player, Sony XBR-75X940E TV, Monoprice Premium HDMI and DH Labs Silver Sonic T-14 speaker cables

I just updated firmware via usb (tried 3 times via ethernet without luck). Still don’t know what it does. EU website has no description whatsoever, while US website change history is not updated (it shows until 2020-0008, and the new versioon is 3030-0008)
