Also posted in the Official RX-A3070 thread........

A few questions for the group here. Long time Yamaha owner here! I’ve currently got the cx-a5000 and now need full 4K HDR support so I will need to upgrade. Not sure I want to splurge on a 5100 or 5200 yet. I’ve heard the rx-a3060 at my dads and now considering the 3070 to replace my 5000. Thoughts on how it compares for strictly movies? I have a Parasound a21 amp driving my mains and Parasound p7 for 2ch listening hence the movies being my only priority here. The 3070 would only power the center and pair of rear speakers or I could keep my outlaw 7 ch amp in the mix and not use any of the 3070’s amps but rather preamp duty only.

Thoughts on this scenario? It’s a heck of a lot cheaper than a 5100/5200. The Sabre dacs in the 3070 seem like they are more advanced than the 5100 even.

There is nice profit in this unit as well.... Nothing wrong with Yamaha, buy what you like not what someone else likes

Another question

For those that have had the Cx-A5000 or 5100, how does it compare to the 5200 sound quality wise? The 5100 is about $400-$500 cheaper and has the features I need regarding 4K, HDR, DV etc. If the 5200 is a worthwhile step up, I’d be willing to go that route.

Opinions welcome!

Edit - I opted to snag a 5100 from Accessories4less, a great deal for a factory refurb! I figured in a few years I can always snag the 5200 or whatever is out at that time. With my new LG 65" C8 OLED, I dont plan to upgrade TVs for a while so the 5100 should cover all the latest formats it accepts anyway (Dolby Vision, HDR, HLG, etc).

Has anyone heard or have experience with audiocontrol’s Maestro M9? I know it’s considerably more expensive unit, but was wondering if there is a big difference between it and the 5200.

Are some of you still loving the Surround A/I on the 5200? I have a3080 and find A/I to be terrific, after I initially dismissed it. Haven’t really compared head to head with Dolby SUR tho

I'm still preferring Surround:AI on my 5200 and my 80 series AVRs. I am always using it for videos these days as I really appreciate how much better I can understand the dialog with it. I also feel that it improves the dynamics of the sound. I still use Dolby SUR for music most of the time.

I appreciate your input, especially since you have a 3080 AND a 5200. I started loving my 3080 so much I strongly considered upgrading to a 5200 but why shoot a winning horse ? (Bad metaphor) For me the A/I gives a 3D soundstage and object placement that's unreal. Love it

May I ask which main speakers you're running, with your other well chosen equipment? (I agree with your choices!)

Sure, my main system's speaker configuration:

Front L&R and surround L&R: Revel Performa3 F206

Front Presence (Heights): 2 NHT Classic 3s
Rear Presence (Heights): 2 NHT Classic 2s

Quick question.
For those who have gone from the CX-a5000 to the 5100 or 5200, if I keep all the crossover and distance settings the same on each model, I shouldn’t have to EQ my sub again correct? I use REW on my dual rythmik setup (with behringer FBD). It’s a ton of work to haul out and connect my pc and mic to my system and run sweeps. I’m guessing the EQ settings and therefore my room response should remain the same right?

Thanks in advance!

5000 to 5100 here. Makes sense to me but is it really that difficult to just run a quick check with REW? I like to give my toys plenty of "exercise time" so I run a Dirac/YPAO/ REW session every month so things don't get rusty . just kidding, or am I?

Thanks for the feedback (I think)

For me it’s a pain running REW because of my setup and the little time I have these days.

So, I'm re-wiring in the front of my HT and hooking up my new 5200. I'm re-purposing my Z11 to power the back surrounds and 4 presence speakers. Using one of my MX-D1's for the front channels, and my 2nd MX-D1 for the center channel. It's a bit complicated, but on paper it looks like a good plan. I finally get enough hooked up last night to fire things up for the first time and check to make sure all channels are firing. I get nothing from any channel-Crap! Then I remember the D1's have a switch for balanced/unbalanced and I was using unbalanced before. Flip the switches, and still nothing. I had noticed that the HDMI lights on the 5200 were flickering back and forth, so I try a couple different cables and different inputs. Nothing. I try my Oppo 103D instead of the Panasonic 820. Nothing. DirecTV Box-Nothing. I'm getting a bit concerned that my 5200 has a problem, then I have an idea to switch off the HDMI outputs. Voila! All channels working. Apparently since I never turned on my JVC projector the 5200 not making connection with it inhibited all audio ouput? That's all I can think.

One of the things that I do early on whenever I install a Yamaha preamp or receiver is after I get the speakers connected I run YPAO, mainly to test operation of the Yamaha and proper wiring to the speakers. Since it sends out a sound to each speaker I listen to make sure that the speaker it says it's operating is the one that I hear.

You can also run the Yamaha in test mode where it activates each channel in sequence, however that won't tell you if you have it wired in proper phase as running YPAO will.

Hello. I just sold my Yammy RX-A3000 and most of my Wharfedale speakers too. It was great but time for upgrade. So I sort of planned on getting a RX-A2080 receiver. But after looking around some more I decided I would want to possibly do a full Dolby Atmos 7.4 system. Thus I thought I would just go for the RX-A3080. But I've sold my previous amps and to do a full 7.4 system, I would have to buy an amp even with the receiver. So now I'm at the point of well, just get the CX-A5200 and an amp. And after looking at some reviews and reading on here, I really want the CX-A5200 now! And one of the other reasons I want the CX-A5200 is as I discovered on this forum, it has the multi channel inputs that the new receivers don't have anymore. I still have my nice Marantz Multi Channel SACD/DVD Audio player and wasn't sure if I was going to be able to use that anymore. But now I'm in luck again.

I probably won't get the Yamaha amp to go with it though. I'm looking at a Monolith amp, but haven't quite decided yet. The speakers I'm leaning towards right now are the Martin Logan Motions, with the 35XT bookshelves as my mains. I'm done with moving huge tower speakers around. I just want smaller speakers and a nice big sealed sub such as the ML Dynamo 1100. So that's my current plan, but I have to wait a bit. I'm going to be moving within the next 2 months and don't want to add any more items before I move. But thanks for all the info.

Hey folks,
Just swapped in a brand new CX-A5200 from a 5100. I use a Vero Kodi 4K+ box to stream movies off my server. I setup everything the same but oddly not a single 4K movie will play while all my blu ray files play perfectly?

What am I missing? I’m out of answers.

Thanks!

Maybe in the Advance setup menu? Switch that to Mode 1, I am guessing that's why.

1) JVC RS540, Yamaha CX-A5100, Outlaw Audio 7700 & 7140, Wharfedale Jade 7's series speakers, RSL C34e(Atmos)

Now for a few opinions.....

What’s everyone using for :
Ultra low jitter PLL mode - Level 1 2 or 3?

DAC digital filter - sharp , slow, or short?

Thanks again folks!

I think on...

On Ultra low jitter PLL mode you use the lowest mode unless you have lip sync issues.

and on

I think DAC digital filter is a roll off, so I would say slow.

Someone I am sure will correct me if I am wrong.

1) JVC RS540, Yamaha CX-A5100, Outlaw Audio 7700 & 7140, Wharfedale Jade 7's series speakers, RSL C34e(Atmos)

I believe the lower the number you get the most jitter correction but could lead to pops and other audio anomalies depending on source.

For digital filter that's up to personal preference. Short latency is often used by default.

Thanks guys! I’ll try a few and see which I prefer. Any one care to speculate as to why my 5100 needed advanced mode 1 for 4K while the 5200 needed mode 2? I have a certified high speed hdmi mono price cable coming to see if that was the issue. The current hdmi cable worked fine with the 5100. Isn’t mode 1 preferred?

Upon further investigation my Vero 4K+ Kodi box came with a non certified or high speed hdmi cable which I’ve read is the culprit. I’m guessing I will be able to use mode 1 once my new monoprice one arrives. Side note, mode 2 does work with HDR because my LG OLED hdr light comes on

Finally got my 5200 hooked up and changed a bunch of cables in my system. Took me a couple weeks because I was rerouting eveything and doing a full cleaning and revamp on everything. Ran the simple YAPO program today, and I was surprised how off it got all my speakers, levels, and their distances. Especially when my old dinosaur Z11 came so close. All speaker positions okay and no wiring issues at least. It picked large for my front and rear presence speakers! WTH!? And it set my front L&R subs at -10db, so they hardly had any output at all. I was expecting too much I suppose. Back to manually setting it up I guess.

I find that the large vs small selection by YPAO to mostly not agree with my idea of what they are so I always set them afterwards based on their specifications.

As for distance, I generally leave those alone since the measurement that is made is based on timing, not actual distance and I don't have any better idea than YPAO as to how long it takes the signal to get from the 5200's circuits to the microphone.
