denon 720w vs onkyo 656 vs pioneer elite vsx-80

Hey everyone. I currently have a denon 3805. I'm in need of an upgrade considering it does not have any HDMIs and the sound processing is quite dated. I have a 5.1 setup with a pair of Klipsch RP 5's a ksc-c1 center channel and a pair of quintets for my rears. I have been looking at the denon 720w, onkyo 656 and pioneer elite vsx-80. I'm not opposed to looking at yamaha as well. Accessories4less has them all in the same price range of around 299. I could go up to 349 but would like to stay below 300 if possible. Do you guyes have any suggestions. Predominantly will be using the receiver 50% movies/tv, 40% gaming (PS4) and 10% music. My viewing room is about 15'x25' with vaulted ceilings also. Thanks for any info or feedback you guys may have.

Were you setting it up with dual subs? My rp-5 pair has a powered sub in each speaker. It's not a major thing, but I would like to be able to set it up as 5.2 if that's recommended.

I have the 656 and it's great imo. Upgraded from an entry level Denon 1513. I picked it up new at BB for $349

Hmmm, now all I need is a recommendation for the Pioneer and I'll be right back at the beginning. Seriously though thank you all for your input. I'm the worst when buying things. I get both cold feet And buyers remorse, my wife gets frustrated so thank you all again.

If you get frustrated and have buyers remorse you should buy something locally so that you can return/exchange it.

Sorry I didn't mean to say that I get frustrated. My wife does. I would love to buy locally but all I have in my area is best buy, and the price points I'm looking at being ~300 is prohibitive. I could always buy and return then buy online, but restocking fees and creating open box items is not really something I'd like to do.

OK sorry for the onkyo fans out there. I have decided to go with a denon. I have increased my budget slightly so now I am debating between the 720w and the x1300w. On A4Less there is only a 50 dollar difference. The difference as far as I can tell is the the type of Audyssey that they use. I am currently only using a 5.2 setup. Would the bump up in Audyssey be worth the 50 dollar increase or should I save the 50 bucks and go with the 720w. Also the x1200w and the x1300w are both the same price but they are currently out of the x1200w, anybody have any input as to why they're the same price, or experience with any of these receivers? Thanks in advance.

The 656 is excellent for the price point. I second this one

Man, you guys really make me reconsider things. What do the onkyo fans out there think of about the rz610 over the 656?

Looks like the 610 would be a small step up from the 656 if you can afford it

I have the Onkyo 656 and I'm not too impressed with it. I'm thinking of returning it and going with a Denon. For me the AccuEQ has been terrible. I've ran the setup multiple times but it still sounds off. Everything is flat when it is enabled. When I turn it off it sounds better but then my subs get sloppy. I wanted to like as I had an Onkyo before, had to replace it because the HDMI board went out.

Thanks for the info on the onkyo. I think I will be going with the x1300w. Fryes had it for 319 but they aren't close to me. Best buy wouldn't price match since it is a promo code deal. The best buy rep did tell me audio fest is gonna start 2/28 so I'm gonna see what kind of deals they'll be running at that point. I'm not getting my hopes up though and might end up going with accessories4less

Well I decided to return the Onkyo. I just couldn't take messing with it everyday to try and get the sound right. I didn't have to do that with my old Onkyo. I found a good deal on a x2300 that I jumped on. Figured I couldn't like it any less than the Onkyo.

if you don't mind me asking what was the good deal on the x2300w and where was it? Thanks again for everyone's input.

I went the ol' accessories4less route. I figured, "yeah it may be refurbished but it comes with a warranty and I can return it." It was 469. Only 70 more than I paid for the Onkyo.

Yeah that's looking like the route I may go as well. I hope you have better luck with the denon. Thanks for all your input.

A4L is great. No worries. I have 2 Denons from them for over a year, no issue. Get an 'X' series for the multeq XT. It is worth the $50...believe it.
