My bias would be for Dolby Surround, but it's really a personal preference. I don't think there's any technical reason for choosing one over the other.

Question....Sony's auto calibration DCAC feature.

It just auto calibrates everything for you so you don't have to do it, right? It doesn't introduce further calibration that you can't normally do yourself, right?

Just want to see if it does anything special beyond what you can normally do yourself by adjusting each speaker and its setting itself.

In other words, is there a way to set this amp so it will always play out of all the speakers regardless of source? A 2 channel source will switch to Multi Stereo and a 5.1 source will play correctly in surround sound?

Again, sorry for the potential ignorance of the question. It's just that, on my last amp (Onkyo TX-NR414) I didn't have to touch anything other than to change the 'source' (which was taken care of by my Harmony remote) and the sound-type (sound field?) just seemed to sort itself out?

Many thanks :-)
Just cylce through the Movie Soundfield settings and use Dolby Surround. This will upmix any audio source into 5.1 to match your speaker array

I have found that in fast moving objects/people on the screen that I get a kind of "ghosting" effect around the moving object.

It's not majorly pronounced (in fact, the wife hadn't even noticed it) but I can see it quite clearly as I tend to focus on that now when watching TV / movies.

Is this a fault of the amp or the TV? I don't remember seeing any of this with my old Onkyo AV receiver?

Is there a way to reduce this?

Thanks

I use Dolby Surround on all tv/movie formats. Work well, upmxing to hight speakers, also automaticly Atmos when feeded.
On music I use Multi Stereo.

I looked at the manual for this unit, but the phantom surrounds feature is not really clear. I have a 5.1 setup with rear surrounds at head level. Will the phantom feature simulate a 7.1 and/or a 5.1.2 setup in my case, or is it not designed to enhance an old-school 5.1 system?

I was looking at Yamahas and Denons, but reviews of the phantom surrounds feature on the Sony intrigued me.

Wow! $399 seems really cheap. I just paid £515 for mine. If that's a special deal maybe you should buy that and try it. You could probably then still sell it for $399 to put towards your Denon if you didn't like it?
(Just be really careful unwrapping it etc so everything is perfect if you come to sell it)?

You could go either way with a 7.1 (non Dolby Atmos) or 5.1.2 (with Dolby Atmos). The 1080 lets you set the height speakers in a 5.1.2 speaker setup. I have a pair of PSB up-firing speakers set to height that rest on top of my front towers. or as mentioned you could keep it at 7.1 with the additional rears.

I got mine brand new for $397 and no tax back in early July. $399 plus tax is still decent though, I think.

Music on the DN1080

So I upgraded from a Sony DN860 in order to take advantage of HDR and Dolby Atmos. So far liking the DN1080 but sadly when it comes to music playback from source such as SACD using OPPO player over HDMI or from USB port (Flac files) the sound quality is not as good as the DN860. It's more brittle and not as warm. The only I've done is add a pair of PSB height speakers. Not sure why there's a slight degradation in sound quality and perhaps there's something in my new setup/config that's causing this? Anyway, not a major issue and definitely something I can live with.

Wondering what others think about audio/music playback on the DN1080? Have you noticed an improvement over previous AV receivers you had?

Good Day,

I apologize for being a noob in this AVR world. I am trying to build my first system and upgrade from a soundbar. I recently acquired a set of Deftech Mythos STL from a friend for cheap since he will be stationed overseas for awhile and now I am trying to find a receiver for this set-up. Is this receiver a good choice? I'm not planning to add any more speakers or subwoofer in the near future.

Thank you so much..

I just picked it up yesterday for $348, there was a $50 coupon on ebay that worked on the $398 price (electronics express, authorized sony dealer). if you have access to AAFES they also pricematched this and there is a 15% off coupon that stacks to bring it to $339

Thanks, but I think you misunderstood me. I have a 5.1 setup and additional speakers are not in my budget at the moment. (My RX-V995 is almost 19 years old, is starting to flake out, and lacks HDMI entirely, so the receiver is my priority. Next year I'll probably look into adding some up-firing fronts like you have.)

I'm interested in what the Phantom Surround feature might add to my 5.1 setup. I'm usually skeptical of such virtual surround tech, but I've read some good reviews of this one.

At any rate, two nights ago an Amazon seller cut the price of the 1080 from $600 to $400, and yesterday practically everyone else followed suit. I ordered an open-box model from Best Buy for $336 to try out. If I don't like it, I can just return it to the local store.

I'll post my thoughts here in a few weeks once I give it a try.

Ok, yes I did misunderstand. Thought you asking about phantom vs. height (Dolby Atmos). Sorry about that. In your application phantom isn't used since you have 5 speakers and most likely keep your back speakers as normal rear surrounds. Phantom is usually an extra pair of rear or side speakers. If you had 7 speakers you could select the extra 2 as either phantom or height speakers depending on placement in your room.

How is the auto calibration tool? Thinking about this receiver, upgrading from my Denon 1912 ... Do you think I’ll hear a difference? Mostly buying bc I need something that will do 4K.

Just joined the team! I ordered a STR-DN1080 yesterday to power my Goldenear Super Cinema Array XL and sub.

I've seen that there are some specific orders of operation for my Harmony remote in order to avoid the Home screen issue. Any other watchouts or tips for setup are appreciated.

Also, I've read conflicting information about the hdmi ports. Are all of them capable of 4K/HDR/DV and 4K/60 pass-thru?

I'll be connecting these to the receiver:
LG C7P
Apple TV 4K
Xbox One X
PS4 Pro
DTV C67K (4k mini)
Nintendo Switch

Dumb question: This receiver supports a 3.1 system, correct? I ask because I see 2.1 and then 5.1 in the manual, but not 3.1

Just picked mine up today. So far so good. The clarity is what I was looking for compared to my Yamaha. I tried setting up via the auto calibration tool and it didn't detect the subwoofer. I have a polk audio psw 100 I think. I know it's self powered. Any one know if I'm missing anything option somewhere

Hi all. I switched out my Denon for this receiver. I’m connected to an Xbox one x and a 1080 P. All of a sudden when gaming I’m noticing stutters that I’m almost positive did not happen on other receiver. Someone suggested the issue might have to do with pass through? Xbox is connected to receiver and receiver goes out to tv. Thanks!

I just noticed that when watching sources connected to the receiver the Options button on the remote does not do anything, basically I can't change audio formats on the fly. I have to use Home button, then select Sound Effect to switch audio formats. Is this normal?

Can this receiver be set to 7.1 + zone 2? In other words, when zone 2 is off, the main zone is 7.1, when zone 2 is on the main zone is 5.1

I’m wondering if any of you use any of the Dolby “upscaling” audio features. I use this primarily with gaming, which will get a 5.1 sound anyway, but wondering what the best settings are. Thanks!!!

Question: I have a harmony hub/ultimate setup to control my system. Whenever I change the volume on my STR-DN1080 my TV (X930E) will display input banner at the top. I have tried turning the Auto Display option on and off within the receiver but it doesn't fix the problem. I've turned off all HDMI-CEC options on all my devices and still experience the input banner on the TV when changing the volume. Does anyone know of any way to turn this off?

This is something the pioneer vsx1130k did well, but this Sony is a major sound upgrade, I am an audiophile with Audeze LCD's; in 5ch Stereo DSD Direct must be turned off, DSD Direct is really meant for two full sized speakers as direct turns off subwoofer and uses L+R Front only. Even so, it sounds much clearer and cleaner in 2ch with my satellite speakers just no bass. I guess I can fix that issue with bigger better front speakers. Now about issues with 80w rms. I see none. It gets loud enough to be heard from 3 floors up AND zero distortion with hi-res audio with it cranked up in DSD mode. 5ch stereo mode I can't say the same about, you don't need to crank it cause you have more speakers supplementing the loudness, however with it cranked and DSD off with DSD files, its noticeably dirty. Perhaps just as dirty as the pioneer in 5ch.

PRO's: highly customizable, menu system is pretty on the eyes, clean sound from blu-rays, 4kblu, even DVD, so far outstanding sound, bringing out things the pioneer couldn't such as cleaner higher dolby rear sound effects.
Con's: takes quite some time to turn on -- didn't time it but its far from instant, no DLNA DSD support yet, the menu system needs run faster, like switching from usb/listen/music/source can have lags at times, don't know why perhaps a bug.

I hope this helps someone also I know we aren't suppose to talk price? but I got mine for around 425 no tax (Illinois residents will have tax ;-) ) & free shipping. PM me if you want to see the receipt, but I don't really want to get into price, just understand all you have to do is ASK for a price discount at some vendors, I did not use eBay. == A B T dot com== which lists it as 598 I think.

Any comments on DSD DSF DFF files through network? I have had it a day now.
Hi there

There is little information on that problem on the net but after a few days of tray and error I finally found a solution:
If you are on a Thecus Linux NAS install Twonky Server Module Version 7.2.8 on your NAS via the Thecus Module Website. License is about 20 USD.
This combination plays : .flac, .dsf, and .wav-files in 5.0 and 5.1 with (so far) no issues.

Sony STR-DN1080 and XBOX One X

All, is anyone running the above set up? I am running into some issues where every time I connect the XBox One X directly to the Sony receiver via HDMI/ARC port, I get some of the XBox 4K details that read unsupported. When I connect the XBox directly to my Sony XBR75X850D 4K/HDR TV, I get all the XBox 4K/HDR detailed marked as green check marks (supported). Why am I getting bottlenecked by the Sony AVR? I'm using the HDMI 2.2 compatible cables and the default cable that came with the XBOX One X. Below are some of the configuration details, and I'm hoping someone can tell me what I need to change to achieve full compatibility between my Sony TV, Sony AVR, and the XBox One X. Thank you all and your help is greatly appreciated!

NOTE: You'll notice that the HDMI "GAME" Signal Format below is set to STANDARD. Every time I try to set it to ENHANCED, I don't get a signal and no image display from the XBOX. I have to set it back to STANDARD to get the image to return. I'm suspecting that could be the issue, but I don't know what's causing it.

I have the same issue with my PS4 pro. Enhanced format doesn't work even though I think my xbr810 c supports it

So I have an update. I disabled the Enhanced mode on my TV's HDMI4/ARC input and set it to standard. Then, I went to my Sony receiver and I was able to set the HDMI port from STANDARD to ENHANCED, but that didn't change what the XBOX was detecting. Some 4K/HDR options still unsupported, yet my TV clearly states they are. Very frustrating!

Surround Sound Setup: 5.1.2..............

Of course it wouldn't. Turning it to standard turns it off. Doesn't matter what the receiver is set at. Both receiver and tv need to be set to enhanced to use those formats

I want to use this receiver primarily for LP's and second for cd's and movies. I run movies in 3.1 and am happy with that.
I currently use bookshelf speakers and a sub for a 2.1 setup for the LP's.
If I use direct mode on this receiver I read that it turns off the sub. I want to use the sub.
Any ideas on what I can do so I don't have to upgrade to full size speakers.

Thanks !
