ok - I'll pick up a couple at the hardware store and give them a try.

Last week I was looking around for a 2 channel amp to go the full 7.2.4 route and, oddly enough, my local Magnolia had an open box Yamaha MXA 5000 amplifier that the manager offered to me at a RIDICULOUS low price. Seriously. The unit has a couple scratches on the side, not visible at all from the front. So I bought it. So my question is should I use the 3070 as a pre amp or sell it and get the 5100? Are there any benefits that the 5100 offers over the 3070 as far as signal processing/DACS go?

Thanks

Elio
I just purchased a 3070 in March, running 7.4.4 with external amps for LRC and one passive sub. So, I did consider the 5100 but decided that it was overdue for an update and didn’t think it would happen this year.

I recommend keeping what you have, run as much power externally from your 3070 to keep its temp as low as possible. Then upgrade later if you really think there is an advantage.

Currently there are no AVRs that are eARC capable, although D+M has indicated their 2017 mid/higher level models are to receive a future eARC firmware upgrade. Yamaha has not indicated this upgrade for their 2017 models.

I picked up a Yamaha Music cast speaker today and can’t figure out how to tell my 1070 to send the sound from the Netflix show I’m watching to it. I have joined it to my WiFi and updated firmware. The app seems to just have music options. I was hoping it would show my receiver or something. What am I missing?

Thanks Onetrack. I was figuring to run LCR and back surrounds from the 5000 and Atmos and side surrounds from the 3070. Figured it would keep the load relatively light on both amps and (going by Gene's review of the 5100/5000 on audioholics) that should keep the 5000 supplying the full 150W to each speaker. Gene said that the 5000 ramps down the wattage when 7 or more speakers are attached.

What does CINEMA DSP 3D offer me if I only have a 5.1 setup?

Does it offer virtual surround back or virtual height?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Nice. I got a laptop cooler for $15 that works great. Variable speed, very quiet and powered by the receiver. It turns on and off with the receiver.

Brand new Yamaha RX A-2070 circuit protection enabled

Well I have a tale of woe...

Been a long time owner of Yamaha amps and love them. Received a new RX-A2070 on 3/22/2018. Just set it up last weekend. Have used it a total of perhaps 4 hours? Last night we were watching two movies and halfway through the second movie (low volume, at a point in the movie when there was quiet dialogue) there was an audible "pop" and the sound cut out. Looked at the receiver, and it had powered down. No heat, no smell. Tried turning it on again (twice) and the display would come up for about 5 seconds (in normal mode, no error display or anything), and then it would power down again. Now it is completely unresponsive except for the red "stand-by" light that flashes when I try to power on the system. From Yamaha's site, this is an indicator that the system protection is enabled and won't allow the system to power on again without servicing.

I had not (at this point) completely set up my 5.1 stereo system so there was very little connected to the receiver:

Two brand new Klipsch PRO-6504-L-THX speakers.
One brand new SVS PB-2000 subwoofer.
HDMI 2.0 (ARC) cable running to brand new LG OLED65B7P

That was it. The audio was streaming to the receiver from Amazon streaming video from the television via the HDMI cable.

Any thoughts / suggestions? Of course I just threw out the box last week (though I have all the cables, manuals and bags). And of course it happened on a Friday night, so no one will be available in customer service (retailer or Yamaha) until Monday.

I have already tried unplugging all cables from the back of the receiver to see if I can get any response, but nothing changed. I have a feeling that now that the "self-protection" circuit is enabled, it is just a brick, regardless.

UPDATE: Reading another thread, it was suggested to hold the "info" and "tone control" buttons while powering up to override the circuit protection lockout. I unplugged everything from the back of the unit except the power cord, held the two buttons, and pressed the power button. The receiver powered up. I was able to adjust the volume, make some input selections, etc. However when I power the unit off and try to power it up again (with no cables connected, and NOT pressing the info and tone control buttons) the system powers up and then after about 5 seconds goes into circuit protection.

sounds like you diagnosed it properly: you need to get a replacement
the protection circuit should automatically reset itself if it detected a short circuit or high temp after the condition was cleared: with no speakers connected it probably indicates something failed in the Yamaha

please take the high road in every post:do not respond to or quote a problematic post: report it

I looked on the internet as well as some stores and never could find a cabinet that I felt was deep enough. Luckily, my wife was a school teacher and a former student became a cabinet maker. I wanted the cabinet to have standard width, depth, and height to make sure all of my equipment would fit with enough room for wires in the back. I took 4 years of mechanical drawing in high school, so I figured I could draw a straight line with a ruler. I finally came up with a cabinet with outside measurements of 24" wide, 24" deep, and 96" tall. It fit in my theater perfectly. It has a shelf in the middle that is permanently attached. The cabinet maker 2 sets of matching drilled holes on both sides with a 2 matching little metal inserts to hold up the removable shelves. I put my Yamaha Aventage RX-A3010 on the permanent shelf in the top section. I put a shelf above the 3010 adding an inch for circulation. I put my oppo BDP-93 and my Dish satellite receiver on top of that shelf, giving it another inch before the next shelf. I put my Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 AVR on top of the shelf, with my AC Infinity fan system and my Samsung M8500 4K UHD DVD Player on top of that. I had all of the wiring put in the wall before I installed the cabinet with plates for wire connectors. I did have to drill a hole on each side. One hole was for electrical wiring to my APC Professional surge protector. I put another hole on the other side of the cabinet wire additional electrical and AV wiring for my Optoma 4K UHD60 Projector. It all sounds good, until I was reading something and "crash, boom, bang". The shelf holding the 3050 collapsed. It seems that the holes were not deep enough and the inserts were not strong enough to hold my 40lb. AVR. I got some 3/4" by 1.5" pine and cut it to fit snug on each side and I put in about 4, 1" screws from the inside for each removable shelf. I never wanted to hear that noise again and I believe an elephant could stand on the shelf and they wouldn't give. The cabinet was stained walnut and a water base varnish. There were 2 doors with dark shaded glass. All of this cost $350 and took 6 weeks. I wonder how much a prefabricated cabinet would cost.

Yamaha 3070 Surround Channel issue

Hi all,

My Yamaha 3070 Will not recognize my left surround back speaker when I have it plugged into the amp. If I connect to the left surround speaker terminal it recognizes it. But not when it's connected to the Left Surround Back. It does the same thing when I use an external amp. If I use the surround back left preamp output to my amp it doesn't recognize the speaker. But if I switch to the surround left preamp output it recognizes the speaker. Is there something wrong with that output channel?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Elio

What is your speaker configuration? Is there a right surround back speaker as well?

Yes there is. It recognizes the right one then stops at the left one.

What is the best setting to watch movies on the Yamaha RX 2070 ?

I see many options like :

1. Straight
2. Surround

I have a 5.1.4 speaker set up for atmos.

For movie, I prefer surround especially if you have atmos speaker. For music, I prefer straight. Somehow I feel the music sound strange when the instrument is panning to my extreme left or right. It's like you are in the middle of the band rather than sitting in the front row facing the band.

Could be an issue with the AVR. Try doing the INITIALIZE procedure (p. 167 Owner's manual).

Hello All, I'm researching my move to 4K and trying to figure out the limitations of Zone 2 output on the 3070. My specific need is to pass digital sources (ie streaming a blu-ray concert to Shield TV) to Zone 2 (deck speakers) while playing surround in the Main Zone. Is that possible on the 3070? Any other glaring limits on Zone 2 output?

Should show up on the MusicCast home page where you see the speaker. Try adding a device in settings? Then you will need to link the speaker with your reciever having the reciever as the master. You can also link your zones in the musiccast app.

Once you do it a couple times it’s pretty painless the Yamaha av controller app is nice too. Can’t control the speaker there tho.

Ive had my 3070 for a couple weeks now and am running 5.1.4. I’ve mostly settled on surround decode neutral:x for the most part as it seems to output more sound from the atmos and surround speakers. Movie:standard is also very good. I like what the yamaha does for upmixing sound so I wouldnt use straight.
