Symmetrical Power Amplifier
Designed to the details. The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left and right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and also helps to achieve a wide open sound stage for a superior receiver.
Anti-Resonance Technology Foundation
A firm foundation. The Anti-Resonance Technology Wedge is a fifth foot in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers.
Advanced Design Feet
Foot fetish. The feet of the receiver feature a newly designed, high-density structure which utilizes two different kinds of interior ribs — straight and curved — to enhance strength and damping performance. Installation stability is improved and chassis resonance is dispersed, effectively eliminating external vibration. The low-range response is enhanced, while resonance peaks in the mid- and high-range are reduced, providing dynamic sound and accurate reproduction.
Aluminum Front Panel

The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic radiation generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. Reinforced for rigidity. The interior of the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an H shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. This reduces chassis vibration to virtually zero even during high volume output (seemingly minor vibrations can affect the sound), maintaining the highest audio quality.

Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there’s no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the AV receiver.

Rich Bass Reproduction

Not sure how much difference in sound the es9038pro might have added, but I suspect it was mostly a cost issue. Will be interesting if they do release a CX-A5200 (or whatever they call it) pre-pro what DACs they will choose for it?
I'm on the verge of ordering the 3060. The only thing I'm curious about are the ESS ES9026PRO SABRE DAC's on the 3070. Insignificant/unnoticeable change from the 3060's ESS SABRE32 Ultra DAC ES9016S's? This seems to be the only "upgrade" "I'm concerned about. Appears to have the same amp.
Buy the 3060 now or pay a few hundred more for the 3070 in a few months that may or may not sound any different? Are both true 32 bit DAC's?
I know, I've been debating which AVR to get for a while now. lol I AM getting closer. :D
Bottom line, the new ESS DAC will likely provide no discernable improvement in the performance of the unit unless new circuitry from the DAC to the RCA outputs or power amplifier inputs, has been implemented. This circuitry determines the ultimate performance given the high performance of the previous and new ESS DAC. The new DAC is a drop-in replacement for the old DAC so a hardware redesign isn't required, perhaps it was done, who knows? Here some added details:
The realized performance of any of the three ESS "Audiophile" DAC's is very dependent on the quality of their power supplies, the direct output circuitry, the circuitry from the DAC to the RCA output terminals and circuit board quality and layout. In particular, it is best use the DAC's in a current output configuration and then convert to voltage using opamps. Yamaha likely uses the voltage output mode with reduced performance. This mode cuts the required number of opamps per channel from 2 or 3 to one, remember there are lots of channels so these costs add up, and reduces the requirements for high quality passive components and circuit board space. Similarly the power supplied to the ESS chip is likely less than optimum.
After leaving the output of the ESS chip and associated opamps the signal goes to a volume control chip; usually eight channels per chip. Hopefully the volume control chip used by the CX-A5200 has been adopted since it appears to handle higher voltages and thus provides more headroom than the legacy chip used by Yamaha and Denon/Marantz. After the volume control there are likely output opamps, one for each RCA output, or the signal goes to the power amplifier input. .
OPPO supplies a nice picture of the inside of the UDP-205 which shows the circuitry required for a high quality output using ESS DAC's. Here is a link:
Based on just looking at the board it appears that the left side of the unit uses one ESS DAC for eight channels. Each of the output chips likely is a dual opamp. The eight chips in a row are the I (current) to V converters, each chip likely has two opamps. The Yamaha AVR likely doesn't have they eight chips or the associated circuitry or board space. The next four chips going toward the top are dual opamps (eight total opamps) used as differential amplifiers, and to drive the RCA outputs. The cream colored blocks are relays. The chips to the left and right of the ESS DAC, which is the silver square chip, likely are voltage regulators for the DAC and the opamps. OPPO may be using the digital volume control in the ESS DAC which is very high quality. Lots of circuitry and lots of cost is involved.
The circuitry on the right uses another ESS DAC for higher quality RCA and XLR outputs. All of that circuitry supports just two channels. A Benchmark Media DAC has even more circuitry to optimize the performance of an ESS DAC.
There isn't even close to enough budget in the design, BOM and build of budgets of an AVR to provide the circuitry that OPPO has implemented. An AVR also unfortunately usually requires an analog volume control. Historically these devices have limited performance, although higher quality, more expensive units are available. Few on this forum seem to be requesting higher prices for AVR's so there will always be tradeoffs.
These design differences make for measurable differences in performance between products that use the same ESS DAC. The audible differences can be debated, and certainly depend on the other equipment in the system, the room, individual hearing experience and ability, and so on... In the past I used the RCA outputs of a previous generation of Aventage 30XX AVR to drive external power amplifiers and was satisfied with the performance. Both my grown children use Yamaha AVR's for the same purpose today.
Now you have me wondering if I can use my old Onkyo 876 as an amp for the Oppo 205. Would I be able to bypass the Onkyo's processing to enjoy the benefits of the higher quality DACs on the Oppo?
3070 is at the top of my list (want a Dolby Vision device), I guess July before it is out?
It would be my first yamaha, how is this version of YPAO, especially having two subs? With the Marantz I have it has dual sub EQ Audyssey, with the Yamaha it appears to have dual sub outs but not sure how YPAO handles that. Also at 39.9 lbs, seems to be pretty beefy.
My dealer's rep confirmed it will have eARC (likely supports it out of the box - though no source devices do yet that I know of). This could be worth the wait, but then its high possible the 2016s will also get it in firmware too.
I'm waiting for the 3070. It will be here in a little over a month, and so far the cost is only slightly higher than the 3060 at legit sites (I'm sure that will change at some point after the 3070 is available, but currently the difference isn't much).

I couldn't wait till August when the 3070 becomes available locally, so I put in my order for a 3060 which Yamaha has currently discounted. This will be my first "flagship" AVR (previously always gone with top-rated CNET models which are, I guess, mid-range). I'm excited to play with the new advanced features and YPAO, and in particular to use the "scenes" for the different configurations I like to use (like disabling centre channel when I'm watching alone in the sweet spot).
I do hope I don't end up regretting not going with the 2017 model, but for my current needs and budget (and timeline - I need to do the fussy bits well before August after which point I won't have the time anymore), this seemed a sensible choice. I looked at Anthem and going separates but I decided that this first step-up is best for my budget and needs at this time.
I'll eagerly follow this thread to see the new owners' experiences and keep my posting to the 3060 owners forum since I won't be joining this club. I'll watch with interest how the eARC business unfolds.
Thinking 2070 might be in my near future. Was thinking Denon x4400 but they keep taking stuff away like web gui, etc.

Note also that both the A1070 and A2070 will feature the same 64bit YPAO, Cinema DSP HD3, and "Enhanced" DSP as are all currently on the A3060 as well as of course continuing on the A3070.

Can't afford one when first come out. Will need to wait for sales like T-giving or after Christmas. Unless there's some pressing issue with them its head of the X4400 in my assessment.

Doesn't that just mean it does the math faster? Once the calculations are done and stored I'm not sure how 32 vs 64 bit would matter.

Yeah, but it looks like the 1070 doesn't include angle measurement. I am wondering if that is important when it comes to the DSP programs like Enhanced as well as D. Atmos and DTS X???

Sure it does. Can take a much bigger "word" all at once and therefore get to the end results way faster.
